In the wake of increasingly frequent bushfires emerging as a threat to wildlife worldwide, koalas have notably been the most rescued species in Australia. However, our understanding of burns and their severity in koalas is limited; hence, this study investigated the histopathological features and depth of burns in koala skin, as well as the presence of smoke-induced respiratory tract damage. In four bushfire-affected koalas that had been euthanised on welfare grounds, skin burns in various body regions were scored based on clinical appearance as superficial, partial thickness, or full thickness.

During and after the event, rescued koalas were triaged at a designated facility and a range of initial data were recorded including rescue location and date, sex, estimation of age, body condition and hydration, and assessment of burn severity ( = 304 records available). Koalas were presented to the triage facility over a span of 10 weeks, with 50.

If a group treatment strategy is pursued, considerations to optimize the likelihood of safe and effective group treatment include taxon-specific pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics, the formulation of prescribed medication, the type and amount of food, the number and type of water sources, enclosure design, size and demography of the group, weather conditions, and health status of individuals in the group. In addition, antimicrobial stewardship principles and relevant legislation/regulation must be at the forefront of decision making.

Temporary reversal of ptosis, miosis, and feather erection after administration of phenylephrine drops confirmed a diagnosis of Horner syndrome. Computed tomographic imaging revealed a fractured rib, traumatic lung lesions, and subcutaneous emphysema.

This was the first time that an adenovirus had been identified in orange-bellied parrots and is the first report of PsAdv-2 in Australia. To investigate the status of PsAdv-2 in the captive population of orange-bellied parrots, 102 healthy birds from five breeding facilities were examined for the presence of PsAdv-2 DNA in droppings and/or cloacal swabs using a nested polymerase chain reaction assay.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis can involve single or multiple organ/tissue systems and may go undiagnosed for years until it enters the clinician's differential diagnosis framework. We report on a young patient who initially presented with diabetes insipidus and subsequently with pyrexia of unknown origin. She progressed from single system Langerhans cell histiocytosis to multisystem involvement and remains in long-term remission following chemotherapy.

Objectives: To conduct a multicentre case note review to examine real-life management of ELPV comparing current U.K.
We investigated the hypothesis that lead poisoning was the cause of the clinical syndrome of clenched feet paralysis and leg paresis in wild raptors. Swamp Harriers (Circus approximans) are one of three extant native raptor species in New Zealand. Harriers with the syndrome were found to have statistically significantly higher blood lead concentrations than those without clenched feet (t-test; t=-4.

Methods: Reports of 199 post-mortem examinations submitted between 1992 and 2007 were reviewed retrospectively. The reports comprised 56 eggs, 51 chicks up to 6 months of age, 13 sub-adults 6-18 months old, 74 adults and five birds where age was not recorded.
Kea (Nestor notabilis) are high country parrots endemic to New Zealand. The foraging behavior and inquisitive nature of Kea have led to incidences of foreign substance ingestion, including lead. Between April 2006 and November 2007, 38 Kea in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, New Zealand, were captured, and blood was sampled for blood lead analysis.

About one in 300 individuals are homozygous for a TPMT mutation associated with very low enzyme activity and severe myelosuppression if treated with standard doses of drug. To validate the use of molecular genetic techniques for the detection of TPMT deficiency, we have determined red blood cell TPMT activity in 240 adult blood donors and 55 normal children.

The method was evaluated by double blind comparison of responses to 17 standard allergens applied individually as 17 conventional patch tests, and as two different sets of five patches each containing combinations of three of four allergens per patch, in 137 patients under investigation for contact allergic dermatitis. There were 89 positive responses to conventional patch testing with separate allergens and 94 and 86 positives to the two different combinations of the same allergens.
