Kimura disease: a rare cause of a recurrent cheek mass in a Jamaican man.

Kimura disease (KD) is a chronic, inflammatory, benign disorder endemic to Asia that typically manifests as a triad of painless masses in the head and neck region, elevated eosinophils and serum immunoglobulin. It usually affects young men in their second and third decades of life and is rarely seen outside of the orient. This is a report of a case of KD in a young man of African descent who presented with a cheek mass.

Birth Defect Co-Occurrence Patterns Among Infants With Cleft Lip and/or Palate.

Objective: To investigate 2- to 5-way patterns of defects co-occurring with orofacial clefts using data from a population-based registry.

Design: We used data from the Texas Birth Defects Registry for deliveries between 1999 and 2014 to Texas residents, including 1884 cases with cleft palate (CP) and 5289 cases with cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL±P) without a known syndrome. We identified patterns of defects co-occurring with CP and with CL±P observed more frequently than would be expected if these defects occurred independently.

Peritraumatic Plasma Omega-3 Fatty Acid Concentration Predicts Chronic Pain Severity Following Thermal Burn Injury.

Chronic pain is a significant comorbidity of burn injury affecting up to 60% of survivors. Currently, no treatments are available to prevent chronic pain after burn injury. Accumulating evidence suggests that omega-3 fatty acids (O3FAs) improve symptoms across a range of painful conditions.

Impact of Completion Lymphadenectomy on Quality of Life for Head and Neck Cutaneous Melanoma.

Objective: Recent randomized data suggest that completion lymph node dissection after a positive sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) improves locoregional control but does not improve survival for melanoma patients. Locoregional recurrences of head and neck cutaneous melanoma (HNCM) may result in significant morbidity. A better understanding of morbidity is thus important to inform decisions about whether to pursue completion neck dissection (ND).

Persistent and Widespread Pain Among African-Americans Six Weeks after MVC: Emergency Department-based Cohort Study.

Introduction: African-Americans in the United States experience greater persistent pain than non-Hispanic Whites across a range of medical conditions, but to our knowledge no longitudinal studies have examined the risk factors or incidence of persistent pain among African-Americans experiencing common traumatic stress exposures such as after a motor vehicle collision (MVC). We evaluated the incidence and predictors of moderate to severe axial musculoskeletal pain (MSAP) and widespread pain six weeks after a MVC in a large cohort of Black adults presenting to the emergency department (ED) for care.

Methods: This prospective, multi-center, cohort study enrolled Black adults who presented to one of 13 EDs across the US within 24 hours of a MVC and were discharged home after their evaluation.

Background: Fabric orthoses are elasticated garments designed to provide support to the musculoskeletal system. They may benefit people with multiple sclerosis; however, in this population, their acceptability is largely unexplored.

Objectives: This study aimed to explore the meaning that fabric orthoses hold for people with multiple sclerosis and factors influencing acceptability.

The red fox is a highly adaptable mammal that has established itself world-wide in many different environments. Contributing to its success is a social structure based on chemical signalling between individuals. Urine scent marking behaviour has long been known in foxes, but there has not been a recent study of the chemical composition of fox urine.

Patterns of congenital anomalies among individuals with trisomy 13 in Texas.

Few population-based studies have analyzed patterns of co-occurring birth defects among those with trisomy 13. We evaluated the frequency of all possible combinations of any one, two, three, or four additional co-occurring birth defects among 736 individuals with trisomy 13 using data from the Texas Birth Defects Registry for deliveries during 1999-2014. We calculated the observed-to-expected ratio for each combination, adjusting for the known tendency for birth defects to cluster non-specifically.

Background: The impact of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on clinical outcomes in menopausal women is uncertain.

Objective: To investigate the association between use of HRT and severe asthma exacerbation in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women with asthma.

Methods: We used the Optimum Patient Care Research Database, a population-based longitudinal primary care database in the United Kingdom, to construct a 17-year (January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2016) cohort of perimenopausal and postmenopausal (46-70 years, N = 31,656) women.

Utilisation of outcome measures in the management of non-specific neck pain: A national survey of current physiotherapy practice in the UK.

Background: Routine utilisation of outcome measures (OMs) is an integral part of physiotherapy rehabilitation when managing non-specific neck pain (NSNP). Numerous relevant OMs exist; however, the extent to which OMs are used by physiotherapists in the UK for NSNP is unknown.

Increasing concern over rising levels of antibiotic resistance among pathogenic bacteria has prompted significant research into developing efficacious alternatives to antibiotic treatment. Previously, we have reported on the therapeutic activity of a dinuclear ruthenium(II) complex against pathogenic, multi-drug-resistant bacterial pathogens. Herein, we report that the solubility properties of this lead are comparable to those exhibited by orally available therapeutics that in comparison to clinically relevant antibiotics it induces very slow evolution of resistance in the uropathogenic, therapeutically resistant, strain EC958, and this resistance was lost when exposure to the compound was temporarily removed.

Feasibility of integrating canine olfaction with chemical and microbial profiling of urine to detect lethal prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men in the developed world. A more sensitive and specific detection strategy for lethal prostate cancer beyond serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) population screening is urgently needed. Diagnosis by canine olfaction, using dogs trained to detect cancer by smell, has been shown to be both specific and sensitive.

Long-term neck and shoulder function among survivors of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma treated with chemoradiation as assessed with the neck dissection impairment index.

Background: Of interest is the long-term neck and shoulder impairment of patients treated with primary chemoradiotherapy (CRT). This is important for counseling patients regarding treatment decisions when discussing primary CRT.

Major thermal burn injuries result in approximately 40,000 hospitalizations in the United States each year. Virus-positive Merkel Cell Carcinoma Is an Independent Prognostic Group with Distinct Predictive Biomarkers.

Purpose: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma that can be divided into two classes: virus-positive (VP) MCC, associated with oncogenic Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV); and virus-negative (VN) MCC, associated with photodamage.

Experimental Design: We classified 346 MCC tumors from 300 patients for MCPyV using a combination of IHC, ISH, and qPCR assays. In a subset of tumors, we profiled mutation status and expression of cancer-relevant genes.

Implementation of Electronic Clinical Decision Support Tools for Antibiotic Stewardship in Pediatric Appendicitis.

Background: The efficacy of clinical decision support (CDS) tools to promote antibiotic stewardship in pediatric appendicitis remains poorly understood. Here, we developed an electronic order panel (OP) to assist with decreased utilization of extended spectrum antibiotics.

Methods: Retrospective review of patients (≤18 years) at a single institution from May 2018 to October 2019 treated with ≥1 dose of preferred (narrow) or nonpreferred (broad-spectrum) antibiotics was performed, and they were categorized as pre- (PIC) or postimplementation cohorts (PISC).

Perceived Care Quality Among Women Receiving Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Care: Results From a 1-Week Postexamination Survey in a Large Multisite Prospective Study.

Introduction: This study examined the perspectives of female patients who had been sexually assaulted regarding the quality of care provided by sexual assault nurse examiners, including whether the patients' perspectives varied by their demographic characteristics and health status before the assault.

Methods: A total of 695 female patients who received care from sexual assault nurse examiners at 13 United States emergency care centers and community-based programs completed standardized surveys 1 week after receiving sexual assault nurse examiners' care for sexual assault.

Results: Most patients strongly agreed that the sexual assault nurse examiners provided high-quality care, including taking patients' needs/concerns seriously, not acting as though the assault was the patient's fault, showing care/compassion, explaining the sexual assault examination, and providing follow-up information.

There is a current escalating need for telehealth (TH) options in family mental health services. In the absence of replicated evidence, TH guidelines from peak bodies are largely based on assumptions of the effectiveness of TH methods. Prognostic neuroimaging biomarkers of trauma-related psychopathology: resting-state fMRI shortly after trauma predicts future PTSD and depression symptoms in the AURORA study.

Neurobiological markers of future susceptibility to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may facilitate identification of vulnerable individuals in the early aftermath of trauma. Variability in resting-state networks (RSNs), patterns of intrinsic functional connectivity across the brain, has previously been linked to PTSD, and may thus be informative of PTSD susceptibility. The present data are part of an initial analysis from the AURORA study, a longitudinal, multisite study of adverse neuropsychiatric sequalae.

Adolescents are spending considerable time on social media, yet it is unclear whether motivations for social media use drive different forms of social media engagement, and their relationships with body satisfaction and well-being. This study tested a proposed model of the relationships between motivations for social media use, types of social media engagement and body satisfaction and well-being. Responses to an online survey from 1432 Australian adolescents (M = 13.
