Enzymes that oxidize aromatic substrates have shown utility in a range of cell-based technologies including live cell proximity labeling (PL) and electron microscopy (EM), but are associated with drawbacks such as the need for toxic HO. Here, we explore laccases as a novel enzyme class for PL and EM in mammalian cells. LaccID, generated via 11 rounds of directed evolution from an ancestral fungal laccase, catalyzes the one-electron oxidation of diverse aromatic substrates using O instead of toxic HO, and exhibits activity selective to the surface plasma membrane of both living and fixed cells.

P-15 is a small synthetic peptide that is identical in sequence to the cell-binding domain of type I collagen and has been extensively demonstrated in vitro and in vivo to enhance the adhesion, differentiation and proliferation of stem cells involved in bone formation.

Seedling root system adaptation to water availability during maize domestication and global expansion.

The maize root system has been reshaped by indirect selection during global adaptation to new agricultural environments. In this study, we characterized the root systems of more than 9,000 global maize accessions and its wild relatives, defining the geographical signature and genomic basis of variation in seminal root number. We demonstrate that seminal root number has increased during maize domestication followed by a decrease in response to limited water availability in locally adapted varieties.

Introduction: Patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (HNSCC) often receive post-operative radiotherapy (RT). A package time between surgery and completion of RT of ≤100 days is associated with lower recurrence and longer survival. In this study, we investigate the impact of outside referral and dental extractions on package time, with secondary detriment to relapse-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS).

Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between a history of bicycling and symptomatic and structural outcomes of knee osteoarthritis (OA), the most common form of arthritis.

Methods: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study within the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI), where we investigated OAI participants with complete data on bicycling, knee pain, and radiographic evidence of knee OA. We used a self-administered questionnaire at the 96-month OAI visit to identify participation in bicycling during four time periods throughout a participant's lifetime (ages 12-18, 19-34, 35-49, and >50 yr).
