Objectives: To assess the incidence and clinical findings associated with the presence of ammonium urate urolithiasis in dogs with congenital portosystemic shunts.
Materials And Methods: A retrospective review of dogs diagnosed with extrahepatic portosystemic shunts or intrahepatic portosystemic shunts in 15 referral hospitals between 2010 and 2023. Data including signalment, clinical signs, physical examination findings and clinicopathologic test results at the time of the diagnosis were collected, and the presence of ammonium urate urolithiasis was recorded.
The prevalence of anatomical-based subtypes of feline congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunts (EHPSS) has not been completely elucidated. The goal of this study was to use CT angiography to create an anatomical-based nomenclature system for feline congenital EHPSS. Additionally, subjective portal perfusion scores were generated to determine if intrinsic portal vein development was associated with different shunt conformations or patient age at the time of CT.

The nucleoside analogues remdesivir and GS-441524 can be effective in its treatment, but most studies have used unregulated products of unknown composition. The aim of the present study was to describe the treatment of FIP using legally sourced veterinary-prescribed regulated veterinary compounded products containing known amounts of remdesivir (injectable) or GS-441524 (oral tablets).

We report on the patient and surgical factors in a consecutive cohort of 2892 CPT stems implanted as part of a total hip construct, either electively or for the treatment of a fractured neck of femur (NOF) over a 15-year period.
Methods: The Bluespier departmental database was used to identify any patients who been treated for a Vancouver B periprosthetic fracture around a CPT stem from 2008 to 2021.
Case Summary: A 7-month-old intact female Maine Coon presented with a 2-week history of vomiting. A peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia (PPDH) and a mass arising from the cardia, protruding into the gastric lumen, were diagnosed using a combination of ultrasound and CT. An exploratory gastrotomy revealed a circumferential, irregular, ulcerated mass involving the submucosal layer of the cardia.

The 2015 Getting it Right First Time (GIRFT) report highlighted that 58% of surgeons undertaking revision knee arthroplasty (RKA) performed fewer than five cases per year.

Our study aimed to evaluate the clinical assessment tools that best predict mortality risk following hip fracture for patients with CKD.
Methods: Patients with CKD G3b-5D admitted to Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, U.
Objectives: To document the prevalence of cardiac abnormalities in dogs with steroid-responsive meningitis arteritis and to assess resolution of these abnormalities following corticosteroid therapy.
Materials And Methods: Steroid-responsive meningitis arteritis was diagnosed based on signalment, physical examination findings, complete blood count, biochemistry and CSF analysis. Echocardiography, C-reactive protein and cardiac troponin I were measured in all cases before and 10 to 14 days after commencing corticosteroid therapy.
Introduction: With rising NHS clinical and financial demands, improving theatre efficiency is essential to maintain quality of patient care. Consistent teams and consultant presence have been shown to improve outcomes and productivity in elective orthopaedic surgery. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact on trauma theatre productivity of different surgeons and anaesthetists working together in a Major Trauma Centre.

In this article, representatives from each of the veterinary schools in the UK discuss how the challenge of delivering and assessing the concepts of evidence-based veterinary medicine in a crowded undergraduate curriculum can be met.

We set out to examine the time dependant effect of arthroscopy on Patient Reported Outcome Measures following subsequent TKA.
Methods: A retrospective review of theatre and clinical records identified 186 patients who underwent TKA within a year of arthroscopy (2009-2013).
Objective: To investigate the ability of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and albumin-to-globulin ratio to differentiate soft tissue sarcoma from benign soft tissue tumours.
Methods: A retrospective study of pretreatment haematology and biochemistry in dogs diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma or benign soft tissue tumours. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and albumin-to-globulin ratio were compared between the two groups.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of hemorrhagic gastro-intestinal (GI) disease developing in dogs and cats admitted for management of non-GI disease in veterinary intensive care units (ICUs).
Design: Retrospective study of animals presented between October 2012 and July 2013.
Setting: Three ICUs located in veterinary teaching hospitals in the United Kingdom.
This report describes a Spanish water dog with an ammonium urate urethrolith which was diagnosed with primary portal vein hypoplasia and was found to be homozygous for the mutated SLC2A9 gene. This is the first Spanish water dog described with the SLC2A9 mutation and the first case of concurrent portal vascular abnormalities and SLC2A9 mutation.

Objectives: An online case registry was initiated to: prospectively survey canine IMHA presentation and management in the British Isles; evaluate 2 previously reported illness severity scores, Canine Hemolytic Anemia Score (CHAOS) and Tokyo and to identify independent prognostic markers.
Animals: Data from 276 dogs with primary IMHA across 10 referral centers were collected between 2008 and 2012.
An 8 wk old male Yorkshire terrier was presented with a 2 wk history of recurrent hypoglycemia, lethargy, and seizures. Investigations revealed a marked increase in blood ammonia, low serum cobalamin, and increased levels of urinary methylmalonic acid (MMA) excretion. No liver vascular abnormality was detected.

This study investigates whether an early radiological grade of OA has an adverse effect on the outcome of TKR in patients with arthroscopically confirmed OA.
Methods: Between January 2006 and January 2011 data was collected prospectively on all patients undergoing a primary TKR for OA.
Objective: To assess the immediate postoperative complications associated with pancreatic biopsy in dogs and cats and review the clinical relevance of biopsy findings.
Methods: Retrospective review of clinical records from two referral institutions for cases undergoing pancreatic biopsy between 2000 and 2013.
Results: Twenty-four dogs and 19 cats that had surgical pancreatic biopsy had sufficient detail in their clinical records and fulfilled the inclusion criteria.
We randomized 126 consecutive patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty into group 1: patella denervation (n = 63) and group 2: no patella denervation (n = 63). Assessment was performed preoperatively and at 3, 12 and 24 months post-operatively. Average follow-up of patients was 26.

The acute phase proteins (APP) form part of a non-specific host response to inflammation. They may be induced by a range of different causes, including infection, inflammation, cancer and trauma. As they form part of the earliest response to such insults, they have potential for early identification of disease.

We have previously reported outcomes at 3 years. We now report the clinical and radiological outcome of an unselected series of 109 knees at a minimum of 6 years follow up.
