Years of research on feedback has not produced universal prescriptions for feedback during training. Results are split in two directions; those recommending more feedback during training and those recommending less. This has resulted in no unified theory and little understanding of other factors that might affect feedback mechanisms.

Introduction: Hypoxia and hypercapnia are closely linked to morbidity and mortality in patients with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). The aims of this study were to describe the changes in blood gases during and following an acute pulmonary exacerbation in adults with CF.

Methods: We performed a prospective observational study of patients with CF admitted for management of an acute exacerbation.

We tested 41 bats for antibodies against Nipah and Hendra viruses to determine whether henipaviruses circulate in pteropid fruit bats (Pteropus giganteus) in northern India. Twenty bats were seropositive for Nipah virus, which suggests circulation in this species, thereby extending the known distribution of henipaviruses in Asia westward by >1,000 km.

Introduction: Recombinant human deoxyribonuclease (rhDNase) reduces sputum viscosity and improves pulmonary function in cystic fibrosis (CF).

Objective: The objective of this study was to describe our experience in which rhDNase (Pulmozyme; Roche, Basel, Switzerland) was administered by bronchoscopic instillation into atelectatic lobes in five adults with CF.

Conclusion: We found this method successful in treating lobar atelectasis, which was resistant to conventional therapy with antibiotics and physiotherapy.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted on wild-caught flying foxes (Pteropus giganteus) in northern India to gather important data on their hematology and plasma biochemistry, involving 41 bats.
  • Juvenile bats showed a higher mean lymphocyte differential count compared to adults, while mean platelet counts were found to be lower than previously reported, and no hemoparasites were detected.
  • The study also noted variations in specific enzyme levels based on body condition, with some plasma biochemistry values being consistent with other Pteropus species but differing from closely related species, laying the groundwork for future health studies on these bats.

The relationship between depressive symptoms in young adults, the quality of the early home environment, and early educational child care was investigated in young adults randomly assigned to receive early childhood intervention in the Abecedarian study. Of the original 111 infants enrolled (98% African American), 104 participated in an age-21 follow-up. Those who had early treatment reported fewer depressive symptoms.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between thyrotropin concentrations within the accepted reference range and cardiovascular risk.

Design: Initially, 728 women aged 45-60 years were enrolled over a 12-month period. All participants underwent full cardiovascular assessment, including detailed health questionnaire, sphygomanometry, body mass index (BMI) calculation, fasting glucose and lipid profiling, and measurement of serum thyrotropin concentrations.

The inhalation of asbestos fibers may lead to a number of respiratory diseases, including lung cancer, asbestosis, pleural plaques, benign pleural effusion, and malignant mesothelioma. Although exposure is now regulated, patients continue to present with these diseases because of the long latent period between exposure and clinical disease. Presenting signs and symptoms tend to be nonspecific; thus, the occupational history helps guide clinical suspicion.

Purpose: The goal of this study was to identify the mechanisms by which 15-deoxy-Delta(12,14)-prostaglandin J(2) (dPGJ(2)) protects RPE cells from oxidative injury.

Methods: Cell viability was determined by MTT assay. Protein expression and activation of signaling molecules were detected by Western blot.

A remarkable variety of conducting states has been found in RuSr2(R2-xCex)Cu2O10-delta ruthenocuprates by tuning the properties of the magnetic CuO2 and RuO2 layers through small changes in the chemistry of the (R,Ce)2O2-delta slab. Both the R3+ cation size and the charge transfer determined by the R/Ce ratio and the oxygen deficiency delta are important controlling parameters that tune ground-state properties from positive magnetoresistive to negative magnetoresistive to superconducting.
