The survival rate of patients with Ewing sarcoma (EWS) has seen very little improvement over the past several decades and remains dismal for those with recurrent or metastatic disease. HDAC2, ALK, JAK1, and CDK4 were identified as potential targets using RNA sequencing performed on EWS patient tumors with the bioinformatic analysis of gene expression. The pan-HDAC inhibitor Panobinostat was cytotoxic to all the Ewing sarcoma cell lines tested.

This scoping review aims to summarize current research on help-seeking behaviors and patterns among children who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) victimization and/or are at high risk of exploitation. Because the literature on help-seeking specific to CSEC victimization is limited, the current review was expanded to summarize findings from help-seeking research for children who have experienced harms that often co-occur with CSEC, such as maltreatment and homelessness. The authors searched three large article databases (PsycInfo, Ovid MEDLINE, and Web of Science) for articles that were (a) empirical; (b) measured or used the term "help-seeking" in their framing and/or results; (c) included children between the ages of 12 and 18; (d) primarily focused on children from the United States; (e) published in English.

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) are a growing health burden across a significant portion of the global patient population. However, these conditions seem to have disparate rates and outcomes between different ethnic populations. The combination of MASLD/MASH and type 2 diabetes increases the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and Hispanic patients experience the greatest burden, particularly those in South Texas.

Background: Most high-risk neuroblastoma patients who relapse succumb to disease despite the existing therapy. We recently reported increased event-free and overall survival in neuroblastoma patients receiving difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) during maintenance therapy. The effect of DFMO on cellular processes associated with neuroblastoma tumorigenesis needs further elucidation.

Decades of health data show major health disparities occurring at every life stage between Black and White Americans. These disparities include greater mortality rates among Black mothers and their offspring, higher levels of malnutrition and obesity among Black children and adolescents, and a higher burden of chronic disease and lower life expectancy for Black adults. Although nutrition is only one of many factors that influence human health and well-being across the life continuum, a growing body of research continues to demonstrate that consuming a healthy dietary pattern is one of the most dominant factors associated with increased longevity, improved mental health, improved immunity, and decreased risk for obesity and chronic disease.

The adult life stage encompasses a range of new experiences, opportunities, and responsibilities that impact health and well-being. During this life stage, health disparities continue to increase for Black Americans, with Black adults having a disproportionate burden of obesity, chronic diseases, comorbidities, and worse treatment outcomes compared to their White peers. While many of the underlying factors for these disparities can be linked to longstanding sociopolitical factors such as systemic racism, food insecurity, and poor access to healthcare, there are also several modifiable risk factors that are known to significantly impact health outcomes, such as improving diet quality, increasing physical activity, and not smoking.

Given the complex relationships that many Black individuals have with dairy foods, due to issues with lactose intolerance or other cultural factors, the National Medical Association has made considerable efforts to examine the role that dairy foods play in the health and well-being of Black Americans. Over the last two decades, the National Medical Association and its partners have produced multiple reports on the value of including adequate milk and dairy foods in the diets of Black Americans. These publications have highlighted the impact that inadequate consumption of dairy foods and nutrients have on chronic disease risks.

The transition to older adulthood is generally marked by progressive declines in body composition, metabolism, cognitive function, and immunity. For socially disadvantaged geriatric populations such as Black Americans, this life stage may also include additional stressors, including dealing with discrimination, poor access to healthcare, and food insecurity. These types of chronic stressors are linked to a higher allostatic load, which is associated with accelerated biological aging, higher rates of adverse health outcomes, and an overall lower quality of life.

Clival tumors are rare and heterogeneous. Although some benign prototypical sellar lesions may present as clival tumors, the likelihood of malignant disease is higher. Here we define a novel algorithm for the workup and management of clival masses through an illustrative case of colorectal adenocarcinoma metastasis to the clivus.

Objective: The aim of this study was to report the authors' experience developing a Lean Six Sigma clinical care pathway (CCP) for endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal operations.

Methods: Using Lean Six Sigma quality improvement principles-including the define, measure, analyze, improve, and control framework-the authors developed a CCP for endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal operations, incorporating preoperative, intraoperative, and inpatient and outpatient postoperative phases of care. Efficacy and quality metrics were defined as postoperative length of stay (LOS), presentation to the emergency department (ED) or readmission within 30 days of discharge, and hospital charges.

Photoionization detectors (PIDs) are lightweight and respond in real time to the concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), making them suitable for environmental measurements on many platforms. However, the nonselective sensing mechanism of PIDs challenges data interpretation, particularly when exposed to the complex VOC mixtures prevalent in the Earth's atmosphere. Herein, two approaches to this challenge are investigated.

Background: Skull base chordomas are typically extradural and present with cranial nerve deficits, headache, and visual disturbances. Clival chordoma involving the dura and presenting as a spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak is extremely rare and can be mistaken for other skull base lesions. Here the authors present a case of chordoma with an unusual presentation.

Background: Nociceptin, which binds to the nociceptin opioid peptide receptor (NOP), regulates stress and reward in addiction. In a previous [C]NOP-1A positron emission tomography (PET) study, we found no differences in NOP in non-treatment-seeking individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) relative to healthy control subjects Here, we evaluated NOP in treatment-seeking individuals with AUD to document its relationship with relapse to alcohol.

Methods: [C]NOP-1A distribution volume (V) was measured in recently abstinent individuals with AUD and healthy control subjects (n = 27/group) using an arterial input function-based kinetic analysis in brain regions that regulate reward and stress behaviors.

Background: The Cavernous Hemangioma Exclusively Endonasal Resection (CHEER) staging system has become the gold standard for outcomes reporting in endoscopic orbital surgery for orbital cavernous hemangiomas (OCHs). A recent systematic review demonstrated similar outcomes between OCHs and other primary benign orbital tumors (PBOTs). Therefore, we hypothesized that a simplified and more comprehensive classification system could be developed to predict surgical outcomes of other PBOTs.

Gender disparities are well documented in the academic medicine literature and have been shown to impact representation, rank, and leadership opportunities for women. Social media platforms, including electronic mailing lists (listservs), may contribute to disparities by differentially highlighting or promoting individuals' work in academic and public health settings. Because of this, they provide a record by which to assess the presence of gender disparities; therefore, they become tools to identify gender differences in the frequency or pattern of representation.

Hypertension affects over a billion people worldwide and is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease and premature death worldwide, as well as one of the key determinants of chronic kidney disease worldwide. People with chronic kidney disease and hypertension are at very high risk of renal outcomes, including progression to end-stage renal disease, and, even more importantly, cardiovascular outcomes. Hence, blood pressure control is crucial in reducing the human and socio-economic burden of renal and cardiovascular outcomes in those patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how nitrogen oxides (NO) influence the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) and organonitrates (ON) during α-pinene photo-oxidation.
  • Experiments revealed that SOA mass increased with NO concentration up to 6 ppb and then decreased, while both gas-phase and particle-phase organonitrate yields increased consistently across the NO range.
  • A key finding is that 6 ppb NO serves as a threshold for shifting conditions from clean to polluted atmospheres, significantly impacting the production and partitioning of organonitrates.

Nonfunctioning pituitary lesions represent a subset of pituitary adenomas that do not manifest with clinical features of hormone hypersecretion. Because of their indolent nature, their diagnosis is elusive, often resulting in presentation after the tumors have grown large enough to cause compressive symptoms. Although they are clinically silent, the various subtypes correspond to the predominant cell line of origin and therefore are biochemically distinct from one another.
