Background: Maternal obesity is associated with significant racial disparities. People who identify as non-Hispanic Black and Latinx are at the highest risk related adverse short- and long-term health outcomes (eg, hypertension in pregnancy and postpartum weight retention). Remote lifestyle interventions delivered during and after pregnancy hold promise for supporting healthy weight outcomes; however, few are tested in groups of people who self-identify as non-Hispanic Black and Latinx or address the neighborhood-level and psychosocial factors driving maternal health disparities.

Article Synopsis
  • HIV-1 infection remains a major global health issue, with around 30 million individuals receiving antiretroviral treatment, where integrase strand-transfer inhibitors (INSTIs) play a key role in effective therapy.
  • The research focuses on evaluating the off-target effects of clinically approved INSTIs on recombinase activating genes (RAG1 and RAG2), crucial for the immune system, using various biochemical and cellular tests.
  • Results indicate that approved INSTIs have minimal to no adverse effects on RAG activity and V(D)J recombination, supporting their continued use in HIV-1 treatment without significant immune system concerns.

Introduction: The influence of implicit biases in virtual interviews must be addressed to ensure equity within the admissions process. ABATE is a mnemonic framework of five specific categories of implicit bias (affinity-based, backdrop-based, appearance-based, technology and media-based, and enunciation-based biases) that should be anticipated and mitigated for faculty, staff, health professionals, and medical students who conduct virtual interviews at medical schools.

Methods: A 60-minute workshop was developed to educate medical school admissions interviewers about the ABATE model and strategies to mitigate implicit bias during virtual interviews.

Drawing inspiration from cohesive integration of skeletal muscles and sensory skins in vertebrate animals, we present a design strategy of soft robots, primarily consisting of an electronic skin (e-skin) and an artificial muscle. These robots integrate multifunctional sensing and on-demand actuation into a biocompatible platform using an in-situ solution-based method. They feature biomimetic designs that enable adaptive motions and stress-free contact with tissues, supported by a battery-free wireless module for untethered operation.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to examine the growth patterns of U.S. children with orofacial clefts from birth to 36 months, involving 1,334 participants from a specialized children's hospital between 2010 and 2019.
  • The findings revealed that growth slowed significantly in the first 3 to 4 months but demonstrated catch-up growth by 12 months for cleft lip and palate types and by 36 months for cleft lip only, though their growth remained below WHO standards.
  • Analysis indicated that individual differences contributed most to growth variability, and children with comorbidities experienced even greater growth deficits compared to those without.

  • Researchers created tiny dual in-plane pores (∼8 nm) connected by nanochannels in thermoplastic materials, which can identify single molecules based on how quickly they move through the pores.
  • The porous sensors were made from two types of thermoplastics, PMMA and COP, with a special cover that helps keep their shape while allowing thermal bonding.
  • The sensor demonstrated high accuracy (98.3%) in identifying individual ribonucleotide monophosphates using a combination of travel time and other measurements from the nanopores.

Introduction: We have shown in a Phase I trial that immediate adjuvant chemotherapy (IAC) during surgical resection and immediately postoperative is safe and feasible in patients with colon cancer (CC). IAC avoids delays in adjuvant treatment and has the potential to improve survival and quality of life. We aim to determine patients and providers attitudes toward this novel multidisciplinary treatment approach.

Retrospective cohort studies, defined as a follow-up study in which outcome occurred prior to study onset, are common in craniofacial outcomes research and will continue to be prevalent given the increasing availability of secondary datasets and inherent prospective study limitations. However, if available data are not adequately measured, or necessary variables are absent, retrospective cohort studies can be particularly prone to bias. This brief communication aims to highlight the primary sources of bias, including measurement error, selection bias, and confounding.

Living organisms with motor and sensor units integrated seamlessly demonstrate effective adaptation to dynamically changing environments. Drawing inspiration from cohesive integration of skeletal muscles and sensory skins in these organisms, we present a design strategy of soft robots, primarily consisting of an electronic skin (e-skin) and an artificial muscle, that naturally couples multifunctional sensing and on-demand actuation in a biocompatible platform. We introduce an solution-based method to create an e-skin layer with diverse sensing materials (e.

: Intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) monitoring is crucial for the detection and prevention of intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS). In the 1970s, air-filled catheters (AFCs) for urodynamic studies were introduced as a solution to overcome the limitations of water-perfused catheters. Recent studies have shown that for correct IAP measurement with traditional AFC, the bladder needs to be primed with 25 mL of saline solution to allow pressure wave transmission to the transducer outside of the body, which limits continuous IAP monitoring.

Article Synopsis
  • Intestinal transplantation (IT) is considered the last resort for treating intestinal failure, with static cold storage (CS) being the traditional method for preserving donor organs, although it leads to harmful ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI).
  • A new method called normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) is hypothesized to cause less damage and better protect the intestines’ ability to regenerate when compared to CS.
  • Experiments showed that intestines preserved using NMP had lower tissue damage, higher stem cell viability, and increased survivor rates after transplant, suggesting that NMP could enhance recovery and regeneration of transplanted intestines.

We report an in-plane extended nanopore Coulter counter (XnCC) chip fabricated in a thermoplastic via imprinting. The fabrication of the sensor utilized both photolithography and focused ion beam milling to make the microfluidic network and the in-plane pore sensor, respectively, in Si from which UV resin stamps were generated followed by thermal imprinting to produce the final device in the appropriate plastic (cyclic olefin polymer, COP). As an example of the utility of this in-plane extended nanopore sensor, we enumerated SARS-CoV-2 viral particles (VPs) affinity-selected from saliva and extracellular vesicles (EVs) affinity-selected from plasma samples secured from mouse models exposed to different ionizing radiation doses.
