A network-based approach for isolating the chronic inflammation gene signatures underlying complex diseases towards finding new treatment opportunities.

Complex diseases are associated with a wide range of cellular, physiological, and clinical phenotypes. To advance our understanding of disease mechanisms and our ability to treat these diseases, it is critical to delineate the molecular basis and therapeutic avenues of specific disease phenotypes, especially those that are associated with multiple diseases. Inflammatory processes constitute one such prominent phenotype, being involved in a wide range of health problems including ischemic heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and autoimmune and neurodegenerative conditions.

Developing a Palliative Care Competency Framework for Health Professionals and Volunteers: The Nova Scotian Experience.

Background And Objectives: In 2014, Nova Scotia released a provincial palliative care strategy and implementation working groups were established. The Capacity Building and Practice Change Working Group, comprised of health professionals, public advisors, academics, educators, and a volunteer supervisor, was asked to select palliative care education programs for health professionals and volunteers. The first step in achieving this mandate was to establish competencies for health professionals and volunteers caring for patients with life-limiting illness and their families and those specializing in palliative care.

An economic analysis of cisplatin alone versus cisplatin doublets in the treatment of women with advanced or recurrent cervical cancer.

Purpose Of Investigation: Randomized trials have demonstrated improvements in overall survival when using platinum doublets com- pared to single agent platinum in the treatment of women with advanced or recurrent cervical cancer. The authors sought to evaluate the cost effectiveness of these regimens.

Urinary tract infection diagnosis and response to therapy in long-term care: A prospective observational study.

Background: The prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria among residents of long-term care (LTC) facilities is high, and is a source of inappropriate antibiotic prescription.

Objective: To establish symptoms and signs associated with a positive urine culture, and to determine whether antibiotic therapy is associated with functional improvement.

Methods: A total of 101 LTC patients were prospectively observed after submission of urine for culture.

Stereospecific Suzuki, Sonogashira, and Negishi coupling reactions of N-alkoxyimidoyl iodides and bromides.

A high-yielding stereospecific route to the synthesis of single geometric isomers of diaryl oxime ethers through Suzuki coupling of N-alkoxyimidoyl iodides is described. This reaction occurs with complete retention of the imidoyl halide geometry to give single E- or Z-isomers of diaryl oxime ethers. The Sonogashira coupling of N-alkoxyimidoyl iodides and bromides with a wide variety of terminal alkynes to afford single geometric isomers of aryl alkynyl oxime ethers has also been developed.
