Background: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is frequently associated with pruritus, which significantly impairs quality of life. Maralixibat is a selective ileal bile acid transporter (IBAT) inhibitor that lowers circulating bile acid (BA) levels and reduces pruritus in cholestatic liver diseases. This is the first proof-of-concept study of IBAT inhibition in PSC.

Objectives: The dangerousness of psychiatric patients is related to many well-documented factors in literature. To better document the course of dangerousness in most violent psychotic patients with severe and persistent diseases, we have developed a Treatment Progress Scale (TPS).

Method: The TPS was developed based on the literature research and the expertise of a multidisciplinary team.

The aim of this study was to investigate sexual aggressors' perceptions of effectiveness of strategies to cope with high-risk situations and their reasons for not using the adaptive coping strategies they learned in treatment. A total of 32 sexual aggressors, incarcerated in a maximum security psychiatric institution, filled out the Coping Strategy Report daily for 2 months. A lack of will, ignorance, and an emotional disturbance were the most frequently reported reasons for not using adaptive coping strategies to deal with a negative mood, whereas anticipation of failure and emotional disturbance were most frequently reported with interpersonal conflicts.

We aimed to elucidate the relationships between pleural (Ppl), esophageal (Pes), and superimposed gravitational pressures in acute lung injury, and to understand the mechanisms of recruitment and derecruitment. In six dogs with oleic acid respiratory failure, we measured Pes and Ppl in the uppermost, middle, and most dependent lung regions. Each dog was studied at positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) of 5 and 15 cm H2O and three levels of tidal volume (VT; low, medium, and high).

Pressure and volume modes of mechanical ventilation are available as options in the current generation of ventilators, giving clinicians many choices when managing a mechanically ventilated patient. In volume cycled ventilation, tidal volume is set and airway pressures are measured, whereas in pressure-controlled ventilation, pressure is set and volume is measured. This article reviews the characteristics of these two ventilatory modes and discusses in detail conversion from one mode to the other.

The aim of the current study was to determine the relationship in sexual offenders between conflict, affective states and particular sexual behaviors (fantasies and masturbatory activities while having such fantasies). To this end we developed the "Fantasy Report", a self-assessment method for recording affective components and sexual behaviors. Thirteen rapists and 9 pedophiles filled out the Fantasy Report every 2 days for a period of 60 days.

The sexual arousal profile of a subgroup of rapists with a history of low-level physical violence during their offenses was assessed. Twenty subjects participated: 10 rapists and 10 nonrapists. Stimuli consisted of audiotapes with the following five thematic contents: mutually consenting sexual activities; rape involving physical violence; rape involving humiliation; physical aggression without sexual activities; neutral.

A current method used to assess the sexual preference of sexual aggressors is the recording of their penile responses during the presentation of erotic stimuli. This method is ineffective in subjects who do not obtain sufficient penile responses. Whether variables related either to the subjects or their crimes would correlate with the magnitude of penile responses during sexual preference assessment was studied.

Sympathetic and parasympathetic activity was evaluated in ten healthy controls, nine asymptomatic, untreated asthmatic subjects and ten asthmatic patients during treatment for acute asthma, by measurement of the variation in resting heart rate using frequency spectrum analysis. Heart rate was recorded by ECG and respiratory rate by impedance plethysmography. Spectral density of the beat-to-beat heart rate was measured within the low frequency band 0.
