Patient expectations and satisfaction following orthognathic surgery.

Orthognathic surgery aims to correct dentoskeletal and facial discrepancies. Treatment usually requires a minimum of 18 months, necessitating that patients are adequately satisfied with the treatment provided. This study aimed to assess the determinants of patient satisfaction following treatment.

Association of the ADAM33 gene with asthma and bronchial hyperresponsiveness.

Asthma is a common respiratory disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of coughing, wheezing and breathlessness. Although environmental factors such as allergen exposure are risk factors in the development of asthma, both twin and family studies point to a strong genetic component. To date, linkage studies have identified more than a dozen genomic regions linked to asthma.

Assessment of patient capacity to consent to treatment.

Objective: To compare results of a specific capacity assessment administered by the treating clinician, and a Standardized Mini-Mental Status Examination (SMMSE), with the results of expert assessments of patient capacity to consent to treatment.

Design: Cross-sectional study with independent comparison to expert capacity assessments.

Setting: Inpatient medical wards at an academic secondary and tertiary referral hospital.
