Increasing Activities of Daily Living Is as Easy as 1-2-3.

Background: Human flora are the most common cause of bacteremia in immunocompromised patients. Activities of daily living (ADL), including oral care and daily chlorhexidine gluconate bathing, can lower the risk of infection.

Methods: To address ADL compliance in our pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant patients, we adopted the ADL 1-2-3 initiative: daily chlorhexidine gluconate bath and linen change, at least 2 activities per day, and oral care 3 times per day.

Midwifery student exposure to workplace violence in clinical settings: An exploratory study.

Evidence indicates that nurses regularly experience bullying within the workplace which has the potential for health and social effects, as well as worker attrition. Literature suggests that nursing students are exposed to workplace violence during clinical placements including from health professionals and mentors, however little is known about midwifery students. This study sought to examine undergraduate midwifery students' experiences of workplace violence during clinical placements.

Students' Attitudes Toward Interprofessional Learning: A Comparison Between Two Universities.

Unlabelled: Because they will become health professionals of the future, it is important to assess the attitudes of students towards interprofessional education (IPE), as this will impact strongly on the development and delivery of teaching models that educators will use to facilitate IPE. The aim of this study was to examine attitudes towards, and readiness for, IPE of students from eight different undergraduate health disciplines at two Australian universities.

Methods: This cross-sectional study employed a convenience sample of first-, second-, third-, and fourth-year students enrolled in one of eight undergraduate courses from Monash University and Edith Cowan University.

Is graduate entry education a solution to increasing numbers of men in nursing?

Males have traditionally constituted a very small proportion of the nursing workforce in many countries, including Australia. Together with a need to address the gender imbalance, nursing workforce shortages require strategies for recruiting new nurses, including males. This study examined characteristics of males entering one accelerated graduate entry masters pre-registration nursing program in Victoria, Australia.

Registered nurses' perceptions of new nursing graduates' clinical competence: A systematic integrative review.

Over the past decade, many questions have been raised about graduates' clinical competence and fitness for practice upon completion of their undergraduate education. Despite the significance of this issue, the perspectives of registered nurses have rarely been examined. This systematic review explores the perceptions of experienced registered nurses regarding the clinical competence of new nursing graduates.

Integrating complementary medicine literacy education into Australian medical curricula: Student-identified techniques and strategies for implementation.

Formal medical education about complementary medicine (CM) that comprises medicinal products/treatments is required due to possible CM interactions with conventional medicines; however, few guidelines exist on design and implementation of such education. This paper reports findings of a constructivist grounded theory method study that identified key strategies for integrating CM literacy education into medical curricula. Analysis of data from interviews with 30 medical students showed that students supported a longitudinal integrative and pluralistic approach to medicine.

Accelerating clinical drug development for children with tuberculosis.

Despite urgent need, the development, approval and availability of child-friendly anti-tuberculosis drugs lag significantly behind that of adults, with children having been ignored in anti-tuberculosis drug development research. This paper outlines possible strategies for accelerating and better integrating the development of drugs and regimens for pediatric tuberculosis (TB) into existing drug development pathways for adults: initiation of pediatric studies of new treatments as soon as promising efficacy data have been generated in adults following successful phase II studies, shifting from the current age de-escalated approach to concomitant enrollment of children from the various age groups in studies, and leveraging the concepts of both the Unified Pathway and regimen development that have helped speed the study and development of novel regimens in adults.

Probability of detection of DNA deposited by habitual wearer and/or the second individual who touched the garment.

Available literature on the detection of transferred DNA does not address the interpretation issues in relation to who wore rather than touched the garment. To acquire a greater knowledge of the rate of detectable wearer, toucher and background DNA, 63 males wore their own underpants for 12h. The inside-waistband was handled by one of 11 female volunteers for 15s.

Tuberculosis in children accounts for a significant proportion of the overall burden of disease, and yet for many years research into pediatric treatment has been neglected. Recently, there have been major developments in our understanding of pediatric tuberculosis, and a large number of studies are under way or planned. New drugs and regimens are being evaluated, and older drugs are being repurposed.

Background: The transition from nursing student to graduate remains problematic internationally with issues arising concerning graduates' work readiness upon commencing employment.

Aim: This exploratory study specifically investigated perceptions of graduate nurse program coordinators on the work readiness of nursing graduates, with the aims of identifying strengths, weaknesses and challenges that exist.

Reliability and Validity of the Measurement of Scapular Position Using the Protractor Method.

Background: The protractor method is a proposed clinical assessment tool, the first to measure vertical scapular position, that directly compares scapular and spinal landmarks. This tool has the potential to reliably and accurately measure excessive scapular elevation or depression.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine reliability and validity of the protractor method to measure resting scapular position.

An investigation of barriers and enablers to advanced nursing roles in Australian general practice.

Over the past decade, there has been substantial increase in nurses' roles in primary health care, particularly in general practice settings. Simultaneously, there has been an expansion of advanced roles for nurses across a range of clinical environments. This paper draws upon findings from a study that sought to develop a framework to support development of advanced nursing roles in general practice.

Educators' expectations of roles, employability and career pathways of registered and enrolled nurses in Australia.

In Australia, like other countries, two levels of nurse are registered for entry to practice. Educational changes for second level nurses in Australia have led to questions regarding roles and career options. This paper reports on interviews with nursing course coordinators to examine educator expectations of roles and career pathways of registered and enrolled nurses.

Student identification of the need for complementary medicine education in Australian medical curricula: a constructivist grounded theory approach.

Objective: Across the Western world, including Australia, growing popularity of complementary medicines (CMs) mandates their implementation into medical education (ME). Medical students in international contexts have expressed a need to learn about CMs. In Australia, little is known about the student-specific need for CM education.

Access to new medications for the treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis: patient, provider and community perspectives.

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is on the rise, and is difficult to treat. The approval of two new drugs, bedaquiline and delamanid, and growing evidence for the use of linezolid, offer renewed hope for addressing MDR-TB. However, access to these medicines remains a significant challenge.

Victorian paramedics' encounters and management of women in labour: an epidemiological study.

Background: Although it is generally accepted that paramedics attend unexpected births, there is a paucity of literature about their management of women in labour. This study aimed to investigate the caseload of women in labour attended by a statewide ambulance service in Australia during one year and the management provided by paramedics.

Methods: Retrospective clinical data collected on-scene by paramedics via in-field electronic patient care records were provided by Ambulance Victoria.

Complementary and alternative medicine: Interaction and communication between midwives and women.

Background: Many pregnant women use complementary and alternative medicine. Although midwives are often supportive, how they communicate with women about the safe use of these therapies has received limited research attention.

Senior nurse role expectations of graduate registered and enrolled nurses in Australia: Content analysis of open-ended survey questions.

Abstract Changes to educational preparation and scope of practice for enrolled nurses (ENs) in Australia have impacted on role expectations. This paper reports results of a survey of senior nurses in Victoria, Australia, regarding opinions of the differences in role expectation and scope of practice for graduate registered and ENs. Content analysis of open-ended survey questions was used to identify themes in the written data.

Similarities and differences in educational preparation of registered and enrolled nurses in Australia: An examination of curricula content.

Unlabelled: Abstract Background: Variations exist internationally in the types and numbers of nurses registered to practice. Whilst the United Kingdom has phased out second level nurses, countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and the United States have maintained a two level system. In Australia, the two levels of nurse authorised to practice are the registered nurse whom complete an undergraduate nursing degree, and enrolled nurse (EN) whom complete either a certificate or diploma programme.

Update on pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNETs) are relatively rare tumors comprising 1-2% of all pancreas neoplasms. In the last 10 years our understanding of this disease has increased dramatically allowing for advancements in the treatment of pNETs. Surgical excision remains the primary therapy for localized tumors and only potential for cure.
