Alternative polyadenylation (APA) is strikingly dysregulated in many cancers. Although global APA dysregulation is frequently associated with poor prognosis, the importance of most individual APA events is controversial simply because few have been functionally studied. Here, we address this gap by developing a CRISPR-Cas9-based screen to manipulate endogenous polyadenylation and systematically quantify how APA events contribute to tumor growth in vivo.

Residual or recurrent mitral regurgitation predicts mortality following transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair.

Objective: Although regurgitant mitral valves can be repaired through surgical or transcatheter approaches, contemporary comparative outcomes are limited with the impact of residual and recurrent mitral regurgitation (MR) on clinical outcomes being poorly defined. We hypothesized that moderate (2+) or greater residual or recurrent (RR) MR-regardless of type of repair-predicts worse clinical outcomes.

Methods: Our institutional experience of 660 consecutive patients undergoing mitral valve repair (2015-2021) consisting of 393 surgical mitral valve repair (SMVr) and 267 transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (TEER) was studied.

Background: We sought to quantify the impact of pre- and postoperative variables on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation.

Methods: Primary durable LVAD implants between 2012 and 2019 in the Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support were identified. Multivariable modeling using general linear models assessed the impact of baseline characteristics and postimplant adverse events (AEs) on HRQOL as assessed by the EQ-5D visual analog scale (VAS) and the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire-12 (KCCQ) at 6 months and 3 years.

Effect of Portable, In-Hospital Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation on Clinical Outcomes.

The time between onset of cardiogenic shock and initiation of mechanical circulatory support is inversely related to patient survival as delays in transporting patients to the operating room (OR) for venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO) could prove fatal. A primed and portable VA ECMO system may allow faster initiation of ECMO in various hospital locations and subsequently improve outcomes for patients in cardiogenic shock. We reviewed our institutional experience with VA ECMO based on two time periods: beginning of our VA ECMO program and from initiation of our primed and portable in-hospital ECMO system.

We identify hundreds of putative RNA-binding proteins, many containing unconventional RNA-binding domains such as Rossmann-fold domains.

Here, we present Homebrew, a low-cost protocol to extract RNA using widely available reagents. Homebrew is as sensitive as commercially available RNA extraction kits.

We performed a systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regression to determine if increasing daily protein ingestion contributes to gaining lean body mass (LBM), muscle strength, and physical/functional test performance in healthy subjects. A protocol for the present study was registered (PROSPERO, CRD42020159001), and a systematic search of Medline, Embase, CINAHL, and Web of Sciences databases was undertaken. Only randomized controlled trials (RCT) where participants increased their daily protein intake and were healthy and non-obese adults were included.

In the era of advancing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) technology, traditional open surgery remains a valuable intervention for patients who are not TAVR candidates. We sought to compare perioperative variables and postoperative outcomes of minimally invasive and full sternotomy surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) at a single institution. A retrospective analysis of 113 patients who underwent isolated SAVR via full sternotomy or upper hemi-sternotomy between January 2015 and December 2019 at the University of Utah Hospital was performed.

Background: Constrictive pericarditis (CP) is characterized by scarring and loss of elasticity of the pericardium. This case demonstrates that mixed martial arts (MMA) is a previously unrecognized risk factor for CP, diagnosis of which is supported by cardiac imaging, right and left heart catheterization, and histological findings of dense fibrous tissue without chronic inflammation.

Case Presentation: A 47-year-old Caucasian male former mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter from the Western United States presented to liver clinic for elevated liver injury tests (LIT) and a 35-pound weight loss with associated diarrhea, lower extremity edema, dyspnea on exertion, and worsening fatigue over a period of 6 months.

Objective: To identify predictors of 30-day all-cause mortality for patients with cardiogenic shock secondary to acute coronary syndrome (ACS-CS) who require short-term mechanical circulatory support (ST-MCS).

Background: ACS-CS mortality is high. ST-MCS is an attractive treatment option for hemodynamic support and stabilization of deteriorating patients.
