Background/aims: Somatostatin-14 (SRIF-14), a neuropeptide co-stored with acetylcholine in the cardiac parasympathetic innervation, exerts both positive and negative influences directly on contraction of ventricular cardiomyocytes, indicative of involvement of more than one of five known SRIF (SSTR) receptor subtypes. The aim was to characterize receptor subtype expression in adult rat ventricular cardiomyocytes and to investigate the influence of a series of SRIF (SSTR) subtype-selective agonists on contractile parameters.
Methods: mRNA and protein expression of each receptor subtype were quantified by RT-PCR and immunoblotting respectively; for contraction studies, cells were stimulated at 0.
Objectives: A new VITEK 2 antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) card, AST N-054, was introduced for aerobic gram-negative bacilli in 2007 and has been widely adopted for routine use in the UK. We evaluated its performance for detecting extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production in Escherichia coli.
Methods: ESBL-producing faecal isolates of E.

Objectives: To evaluate the impact of selective fluconazole prophylaxis on incidence of invasive fungal infection and emergence of fluconazole resistance in neonatal intensive care.
Design: Retrospective study of very low birthweight (VLBW) babies (<1500 g birth weight) admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the period 1 year before and after the implementation of an antifungal prophylaxis guideline.
Patients: VLBW babies with an additional risk factor: colonisation of Candida species from surface sites with a central venous catheter; third generation cephalosporin treatment; or total duration of antibiotic treatment >10 days.
This study was carried out to further the available information on adult cases of human metapneumovirus (hMPV), a recently described cause of respiratory infection. Among a cohort of 741 symptomatic patients tested since 2003, the virus was diagnosed in six adults using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Of the six, two were from the community, two were hospital inpatients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and two were immunocompromised patients, both of whom required ventilation and later died.

The actions of these peptides are mediated by the calcitonin receptor-like receptor (CLR) in association with one of three receptor activity-modifying proteins. CGRP is selective for CLR/receptor activity modifying protein (RAMP)1, AM for CLR/RAMP2 and -3, and IMD acts at both CGRP and AM receptors.

Nitric oxide synthase inhibition, induced by chronic administration of N(omega)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) to rats, induces cardiac hypertrophy in some, but not all cases; there are few reports of direct assessment of cardiomyocyte parameters. The objective was to characterize hypertrophic parameters in left (LV) and right ventricular (RV) cardiomyocytes after administration of L-NAME to rats for 8 wk and to determine whether adrenomedullin and its receptor components were upregulated.
