Background: It has been shown that mitral valve repair is superior to mechanical replacement in children with rheumatic heart disease; however there are limited data on the factors affecting the long-term durability of repaired mitral valves. This study describes outcomes after rheumatic mitral valve repair, with adaptation of a risk score to clarify some novel predictors of repair instability.

Methods: A total of 79 children (median age, 11.

Background: The decision to resurface the patella or not during total knee replacement (TKR) is a controversial issue. During primary TKR some surgeons routinely resurface the patella, others operate a selective policy and a third group never resurfaces the patella.

Aim: This study attempts to investigate the relationship of patellofemoral knee pain and TKR.

Background: The authors assessed a new instrument, the Rolimeter, for the measurement of anteroposterior translation in the knee; it was compared to the KT-1000 arthrometer.

Purpose: To determine if the Rolimeter offers a valid method for the measurement of anteroposterior translation that is as reproducible and reliable as the KT-1000 arthrometer.

Methods: Two of 3 observers examined 16 normal subjects (32 knees) and 36 patients (72 knees) with ligament ruptures twice, using both the Rolimeter and the KT-1000 arthrometers, 30 minutes apart.

Twenty-two patients were followed up at a mean of 33 months after hemiarthroplasty for proximal humeral fractures. Of these, 13 underwent surgery within 30 days of injury and 9 after a mean of 13 months. Outcome was assessed by pain, range of motion, function, stability, and strength.

Intensive surgical skills courses have become an essential part of surgical skill acquisition for surgeons in training. There is a need to monitor the value of these courses in terms of skill attainment. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of skills-laboratory-based training in rigid bronchoscopy and bronchial foreign body removal.

Tibiofemoral alignment has a direct correlation with the survival of total knee arthroplasty. Traditionally, it has been measured using a goniometer on radiographs. We describe new software which measures this alignment on scanned radiographs by automatically detecting bones in the image.

Several radiographic parameters correlate with clinical outcome in distal radius fractures. This study describes a new, computerized routine that automatically defines the longitudinal axis of the radius, deriving the radial tilt, radial width, and radial height on anteroposterior radiographs of the wrist. The intraobserver and interobserver variability is reported in a series of 33 anteroposterior radiographs of the wrist.

We describe a method of audit of a type of total knee replacement, including some details of the organisational difficulties of administering multicentre studies, and draw attention to how this can be done using industrial funding without prejudicing the study. This is a prospective record of 1439 patients who had an Insall-Burstein II (IBII) prosthesis implanted between 1990 and 1994. The data were collected using the American Knee Society scoring system.

A pilot study consisted of 65 patient referrals to a Regional Plastic Surgery Department in which the referral letter, accompanied by a high-quality Polaroid photograph, was assessed by four consultants. The diagnosis, degree of urgency of treatment, grade of surgeon (to undertake the operation) and anticipated time for the procedure were recorded. The results were statistically analysed.

Recent studies show that structural parameters of bone, obtained from computerized image analysis of radiographs, can improve the noninvasive determination of bone strength when used in conjunction with bone density measurements. The present study was designed to assess the ability of image features alone to predict the mechanical characteristics of bones. A multifactorial model was used to incorporate simultaneously a number of characteristics of the image, including periodicity and spatial orientation of the trabeculae.

We have carried out a prospective, longitudinal 30-year review of 95 adolescents who underwent total meniscectomy in one knee, and have compared the results with those observed 13 years earlier. All the medical records were scrutinised. Of the 63 patients reviewed clinically, 47 reported decreased sporting activity, although subjective satisfaction rose by 3% to 71%.

Twenty one individuals who had undergone unilateral total meniscectomy, and had no significant antero-posterior (AP) laxity underwent three dimensional (3-D) gait analysis, bilateral radiological assessment of varus/valgus alignment and tibio-femoral osteoarthritis (TFOA). Average foot progression angle during the stance phase of gait was not related to knee adduction moment. The findings support the previously noted correlation between varus/valgus alignment and TFOA.

There are currently two types of forceps used for foreign body removal at rigid bronchoscopy, these can be classified as standard bronchoscopy forceps and optically guided grasping forceps. In order to evaluate them in the removal of foreign bodies from the tracheo-bronchial tree a randomised subject controlled trial was conducted. All 80 bronchoscopies were recorded and analysed by a single observer according to predetermined criteria for surgical error.

A cohort of 39 patients (28 male, 11 female) that had undergone total meniscectomy as adolescents (mean age 16 years) underwent FISP 3D Magnetic Resonance Imaging at a mean follow up of 30 years. The presence of meniscal tissue was assessed by two independent observers blinded to the operation details. The volume of any meniscal tissue present was calculated.
