The topic of data storage, traceability, and data use and reuse in the years following experiments is becoming an important topic in Europe and across the world. Many scientific communities are striving to create open data by the FAIR principles. This is a requirement from the European Commission for EU-funded projects and experiments at EU-funded research infrastructures (RIs) and from many national funding agencies.

Breast cancer (BCa) is the most common cancer in women and the estrogen receptor (ER)+ subtype is increasing in incidence. There are numerous therapy options available for patients that target the ER, however issues such as innate and acquired treatment resistance, and treatment related side effects justify research into alternative therapeutic options for these patients. Patients of many solid tumour types have benefitted from immunotherapy, however response rates have been generally low in ER+ BCa.

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor CHRNA5 is overexpressed in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients with a recent tobacco smoking history.

Tobacco smoking is a major driver of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) occurrence, and previous studies have shed light on the precise molecular alterations in tobacco-related HNSCCs when compared to HNSCCs associated with other risk factors (ex: human papillomavirus/HPV status). In this study, we analyzed the gene expression differences in HNSCC cases with a recent smoking history and revealed that the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor CHRNA5 is differentially overexpressed in smoking-related HNSCCs. CHRNA5 overexpression in these HNSCCs corresponds with a worse prognosis and is inversely correlated with an immune expression signature commonly associated with better prognosis.

Boron Nitride Nanosheet-Magnetic Nanoparticle Composites for Water Remediation Applications.

The combination of 0D nanoparticles with 2D nanomaterials has attracted a lot of attention over the last years due to the unique multimodal properties of resulting 0D-2D nanocomposites. In this work, we developed boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) functionalized with manganese ferrite magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). The functionalization process involved attachment of MNPs to exfoliated BNNS by refluxing the precursor materials in a polyol medium.

Tumor macrophage functional heterogeneity can inform the development of novel cancer therapies.

Macrophages represent a key component of the tumor microenvironment (TME) and are largely associated with poor prognosis. Therapeutic targeting of macrophages has historically focused on inhibiting their recruitment or reprogramming their phenotype from a protumor (M2-like) to an antitumor (M1-like) one. Unfortunately, this approach has not provided clinical breakthroughs that have changed practice.

Background: Genome-wide measures of genetic disruption such as tumour mutation burden (TMB) and mutation signatures are emerging as useful biomarkers to stratify patients for treatment. However, the accuracy and cost associated with these assays limits their utility at scale.

Low-voltage scanning electron microscopy is a powerful tool for examining surface features and imaging beam-sensitive materials. Improving resolution during low-voltage imaging is then an important area of development. Decreasing the effect of chromatic aberration is one solution to improving the resolution and can be achieved by reducing the energy spread of the electron source.

Nanofiltration (NF) is one of the emerging technologies that is very promising for water purification among many other applications. 2D boron nitride (BN) based nanomaterials are excellent building blocks for NF membranes. In our work, BN nanosheets (BNNS) have been functionalized with magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to form BNNS-MNP nanocomposites.

Demonstrating the source of inherent instability in NiFe LDH-based OER electrocatalysts.

Nickel-iron layered double hydroxides are known to be one of the most highly active catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline conditions. The high electrocatalytic activity of the material however cannot be sustained within the active voltage window on timescales consistent with commercial requirements. The goal of this work is to identify and prove the source of inherent catalyst instability by tracking changes in the material during OER activity.

Dynamic microtubules slow down during their shrinkage phase.

Microtubules are dynamic polymers that undergo stochastic transitions between growing and shrinking phases. The structural and chemical properties of these phases remain poorly understood. The transition from growth to shrinkage, termed catastrophe, is not a first-order reaction but rather a multistep process whose frequency increases with the growth time: the microtubule ages as the older microtubule tip becomes more unstable.

Understanding the effect of MXene in a TMO/MXene hybrid catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction.

Very recently, it has been reported that mixed transition metal oxide (TMO)/MXene catalysts show improved performance over TMO only catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the reasoning behind this observation is unknown. In this work mixed Co(OH)/TiCT were prepared and characterized for the OER using ex situ and operando spectroscopy techniques in order to initiate the understanding of why mixed TMO/MXene materials show better performances compared to TMO only catalysts.

Often dubbed the fourth trimester, the first 6 weeks of the postpartum period is a critical time that sets the stage for future health outcomes for both women and children. Leading maternal and child health advocates agree that intervention in the first 6 weeks of life is crucial. Although most new parents prioritize their newborn's well-care, many postpartum patients do not attend appointments for themselves, missing critical opportunities for identification and treatment of leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality.

Do educators value the promotion of students' wellbeing? Quantifying educators' attitudes toward wellbeing promotion.

Educators' attitudes toward Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and health and wellbeing promotion can significantly influence the success (or otherwise) of such policies and practices. While numerous studies exist, from which a broad understanding of such attitudes can be garnered, there is currently no attendant measurement which quantifies educators attitudes regarding the promotion of student wellbeing. The aim of this study was to address this gap in knowledge by quantifying the degree to which educators are positively or negatively disposed to the promotion of student wellbeing.

Single-molecule analysis of the entire perfringolysin O pore formation pathway.

The cholesterol-dependent cytolysin perfringolysin O (PFO) is secreted by as a bacterial virulence factor able to form giant ring-shaped pores that perforate and ultimately lyse mammalian cell membranes. To resolve the kinetics of all steps in the assembly pathway, we have used single-molecule fluorescence imaging to follow the dynamics of PFO on dye-loaded liposomes that lead to opening of a pore and release of the encapsulated dye. Formation of a long-lived membrane-bound PFO dimer nucleates the growth of an irreversible oligomer.

A systematic review of online education initiatives to develop students remote caring skills and practices.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has altered caring professions education and the range of technological competencies needed to thrive in today's digital economy. We aimed to identify the various technologies and design strategies being used to help students develop and translate professional caring competencies into remote working environments. Eight databases were systematically searched in February 2021 for relevant studies.

Current insights into the bone marrow niche: From biology in vivo to bioengineering ex vivo.

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are fundamental to the generation of the body's blood and immune cells. They reside primarily within the bone marrow (BM) niche microenvironment, which provides signals responsible for the regulation of HSC activities. While our understanding of these signalling mechanisms continues to improve, our ability to recapitulate them in vitro to harness the clinical potential of the HSC populations is still lacking.

Importance: Currently, there is a lack of consensus in the literature on the association between screen time (eg, television, video games) and children's behavior problems.

Objective: To assess the association between the duration of screen time and externalizing and internalizing behavior problems among children 12 years or younger.

Data Sources: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycINFO databases were searched for articles published from January 1960 to May 2021.

Mindful self-care and resilience in first-year undergraduate students.

Objective: Post-secondary students experience elevated levels of academic stress. The objective of the current study is to examine the relationship between a three factor model of resilience (ie, mastery, emotionality reactivity, and relatedness), mindful self-care and flourishing in first-year undergraduate students.

Participants: A sample ( = 177) of first-year undergraduates were recruited from a large urban university in Alberta during the 2019-2020 academic year.

HIV PrEP implementation: A multi-level systems approach.

Purpose: CO-PrIDE was a three-year Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) demonstration project to increase access to PrEP for men who have sex with men and transgender people in the Denver/Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. CO-PrIDE implemented a multi-level framework featuring collaboration between health systems and community organizations to link clients to PrEP prescribers and provide support services intended to help clients overcome socioeconomic barriers to PrEP uptake. These services included payment assistance, insurance navigation, and healthcare navigation.

A Pilot Investigation of the Influence of a Passive Military Exoskeleton on the Performance of Lab-Simulated Operational Tasks.

However, its evidence base is small, with few robust independent randomised controlled trials, and no associated process or cost evaluations.

is a sexually transmitted pathogen with increasing resistance to first- and second-line antimicrobials. The 'near-patient test' ResistancePlus MG FleXible (SpeeDx) detects plus four macrolide resistance mutations (MRMs), facilitating same-day patient follow up. This assay has not been assessed on freshly collected samples.
