The nonhuman primate (NHP) is the gold standard preclinical model for therapeutic development in ophthalmology, owing to the similar visual system and immune landscape in the NHP relative to the human. Background: Beta-lactam antibiotics are first-line agents for most patients receiving antimicrobial prophylaxis in surgical procedures. Despite evidence showing low cross-reactivity between penicillins and cephalosporins, patients with beta-lactam allergies commonly receive vancomycin as an alternative to avoid allergic reaction.

High resolution retinal imaging paired with intravitreal injection of a viral vector coding for the calcium indicator GCaMP has enabled visualization of activity dependent calcium changes in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) at single cell resolution in the living eye. The inner limiting membrane (ILM) is a barrier for viral vectors, restricting transduction to a ring of RGCs serving the fovea in both humans and non-human primates (NHP). We evaluate peeling the ILM prior to intravitreal injection as a strategy to expand calcium imaging beyond the fovea in the NHP eye in vivo.

Background: Antibiotics are a strong risk factor for Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), and CDI incidence is often measured as an important outcome metric for antimicrobial stewardship interventions aiming to reduce antibiotic use. However, risk of CDI from antibiotics varies by agent and dependent on the intensity (ie, spectrum and duration) of antibiotic therapy. Thus, the impact of stewardship interventions on CDI incidence is variable, and understanding this risk requires a more granular measure of intensity of therapy than traditionally used measures like days of therapy (DOT).

Unlabelled: The shelf-life of cold and hot water extraction coffees based on sensory and chemical profiles and microbial growth was examined, which also allowed the study of the influence of extraction temperature on the chemical and sensorial profiles of coffee. The shelf life of refrigerated cold- and hot-brewed coffee was limited not by microbial stability but rather by deterioration in sensory attributes. Further work is recommended to elucidate the mechanisms of coffee staling in a refrigerated environment, with particular interest in the degradation products of chlorogenic acid, as a significant decline in chlorogenic acid concentration was found over the storage period.

Although perinatal lethal hypophosphatasia (HPP) was once a disease with a universally poor prognosis, it has now become a rare but treatable condition with the advent of enzyme replacement therapy with asfotase alfa. Though the responses of the rich variety of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) reflect the totality of visual processing in the retina and provide the sole conduit for those processed responses to the brain, we have much to learn about how the brain uses these signals to guide behavior. An impediment to developing a comprehensive understanding of the role of retinal circuits in behavior is the paucity of causal studies in the intact primate visual system.
