The present investigation aims to examine the role of α-synuclein seed amplification assays for screening Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder caused by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the midbrain, leading to symptoms such as tremors, bradykinesia, postural instability, dementia, and depression. It is classified as an α-synucleinopathy related to the role of α-synuclein aggregates in neuron degeneration.

Global climate policy has increasingly acknowledged the specific contributions of Indigenous Peoples. The outcome of COP 28, however, demonstrates that this acknowledgement has not shifted the conceptual foundations of dominant climate solutions, nor has it created space for Indigenous Peoples to effectively contribute. Drawing on our expertise as Indigenous scholars and practitioners, we offer four recommendations to shift climate policy and research away from these foundations towards reciprocal relationships with the natural world – strengthening it for future generations.

The speciation of technetium in the nitric acid/dibutylphosphoric acid (HDBP)--dodecane system was studied by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy and theoretical methods. Tetravalent technetium, produced by the hydrazine reduction of TcO in 3 M HNO, was extracted by HDBP in -dodecane (30% by volume). During extraction, the splitting of the organic phase into a heavy phase and a light phase was observed.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is one of the most prevalent X-linked inherited neuromuscular disorders, with an estimated incidence between 1 in 3500 and 5000 live male births. The median life expectancy at birth is around 30 years due to a rapid and severe disease progression. Cows produce antibodies with a disulfide-bonded antigen-binding domain embedded within ultralong heavy chain third complementarity determining regions. This "knob" domain is analogous to natural cysteine-rich peptides such as knottins in that it is small and stable but can accommodate diverse loops and disulfide bonding patterns. We immunized cattle with SARS-CoV-2 spike and found ultralong CDR H3 antibodies that could neutralize several viral variants at picomolar IC potencies in vitro and could protect from disease in vivo.

Histidine (an imidazole-based amino acid) is a promising building block for short aromatic peptides containing a proton donor/acceptor moiety. Previous studies have shown that polyalanine helical peptides substituted at regular intervals with histidine residues exhibit both structural stability as well as high proton affinity and high conductivity. Here, we present first-principle calculations of non-aqueous histidine-containing 3-, α- and π-helices and show that they are able to form hydrogen-bonded networks mimicking proton wires that have the ability to shuttle protons via the Grotthuss shuttling mechanism.
