Implementation Strategies Used to Reduce UEs in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Background: Unplanned extubation (UE) is the premature or unintended removal of an artificial airway and can cause worse patient outcomes. Study objectives were to describe implementation strategies used to reduce UE in the Hospital for Sick Children neonatal ICU (NICU) and their influence on UE rates, and contributing factors and patient characteristics of infants who had an UE, and compare them between the biological sexes. We hypothesized that the boys would experience more UEs and worse outcomes compared to the girls.

Anti-pig antibodies in swine veterinarian serum: Implications for clinical xenotransplantation.

Recent clinical xenotransplantation and human decedent studies demonstrate that clinical hyperacute rejection of genetically engineered porcine organs can be reliably avoided but that antibody mediated rejection (AMR) continues to limit graft survival. We previously identified porcine glycans and proteins which are immunogenic after cardiac xenotransplantation in non-human primates, but the clinical immune response to antigens present in glycan depleted triple knockout (TKO) donor pigs is poorly understood. In this study we use fluorescence barcoded human embryonic kidney cells (HEK) and HEK cell lines expressing porcine glycans (Gal and SDa) or proteins (tetraspanin-29 [CD9], membrane cofactor protein [CD46], protectin, membrane attack complex inhibition factor [CD59], endothelial cell protein C receptor, and Annexin A2) to screen antibody reactivity in human serum from 160 swine veterinarians, a serum source with potential occupational immune challenge from porcine tissues and pathogens.

Tracking in situ checkpoint inhibitor-bound target T cells in patients with checkpoint-induced colitis.

The success of checkpoint inhibitors (CPIs) for cancer has been tempered by immune-related adverse effects including colitis. CPI-induced colitis is hallmarked by expansion of resident mucosal IFNγ cytotoxic CD8 T cells, but how these arise is unclear. Here, we track CPI-bound T cells in intestinal tissue using multimodal single-cell and subcellular spatial transcriptomics (ST).

Racial Discrimination and Romantic Relationship Dynamics among Black Americans: A Systematic Review.

Despite increasing research, the links between racial discrimination and Black Americans' romantic relationship dynamics remain unclear. Guided by models of mundane extreme environmental stress (Peters & Massey, 1983), sociocultural family stress (McNeil Smith & Landor, 2018), and Black marital outcomes (Bryant et al., 2010), we conducted a systematic review of the literature examining racial discrimination and relationship dynamics among Black Americans in same-race and interracial romantic relationships.

Nonrandom foraging and resource distributions affect the relationships between host density, contact rates and parasite transmission.

Nonrandom foraging can cause animals to aggregate in resource dense areas, increasing host density, contact rates and pathogen transmission, but when should nonrandom foraging and resource distributions also have density-independent effects? Here, we used a factorial experiment with constant resource and host densities to quantify host contact rates across seven resource distributions. We also used an agent-based model to compare pathogen transmission when host movement was based on random foraging, optimal foraging or something between those states. Nonrandom foraging strongly depressed contact rates and transmission relative to the classic random movement assumptions used in most epidemiological models.

The kinetics and mechanism of the reaction between OH radicals and ferrous ions in the temperature range 25-300 °C were studied using pulse radiolysis. At temperatures <150 °C the rate of reaction is essentially independent of temperature, while at temperatures >150 °C the activation energy is 45.8 ± 3.

Using machine learning to improve bovine tuberculosis control in herd level outbreaks.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB), a chronic disease of cattle, is caused by the Mycobacterium bovis infection. Despite having a serious social and economic impact in the United Kingdom and Ireland, there is no antemortem gold standard diagnostic test. Tuberculin skin tests (CICT) are commonly used as a control measure with the interferon gamma (IFN-γ) assay being applied in certain circumstances.

AA2P-mediated DNA demethylation synergizes with stem cell agonists to promote expansion of hematopoietic stem cells.

Small molecules have enabled expansion of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs), but limited knowledge is available on whether these agonists can act synergistically. In this work, we identify a stem cell agonist in AA2P and optimize a series of stem cell agonist cocktails (SCACs) to help promote robust expansion of human HSPCs. We find that SCACs provide strong growth-promoting activities while promoting retention and function of immature HSPC.

Update on the ethical, legal and technical challenges of translating xenotransplantation.

This manuscript reports on a landmark symposium on the ethical, legal and technical challenges of xenotransplantation in the UK. King's College London, with endorsement from the British Transplantation Society (BTS), and the European Society of Organ Transplantation (ESOT), brought together a group of experts in xenotransplantation science, ethics and law to discuss the ethical, regulatory and technical challenges surrounding translating xenotransplantation into the clinical setting. The symposium was the first of its kind in the UK for 20 years.

Shape is a primary determinant of consumer preference for many horticultural crops and it is also associated with many aspects of marketing, harvest mechanics, and postharvest handling. Perceptions of quality and preference often map to specific shapes of fruits, tubers, leaves, flowers, roots, and other plant organs. As a result, humans have greatly expanded the palette of shapes available for horticultural crops, in many cases creating a series of market classes where particular shapes predominate.

Feasibility and Proof-of-Concept of Delivering an Autonomous Music-Based Digital Walking Intervention to Persons with Parkinson's Disease in a Naturalistic Setting.

Background: Reduced motor automaticity in Parkinson's disease (PD) negatively impacts the quality, intensity, and amount of daily walking. Rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS), a clinical intervention shown to improve walking outcomes, has been limited by barriers associated with the need for ongoing clinician input.

Objective: To assess the feasibility, proof-of-concept, and preliminary clinical outcomes associated with delivering an autonomous music-based digital walking intervention based on RAS principles to persons with PD in a naturalistic setting.

The impact of a music enrichment program during infancy and early toddlerhood on effortful control at age 3: A preliminary investigation.

Effortful control (EC), a self-regulation skill, is associated with long-term developmental outcomes. Music has been associated with infant self-regulation and may be an intervention strategy for enhancing EC during toddlerhood. This investigation included 32 parent-child dyads from a previously conducted randomized controlled trial (RCT).

Geography Influences Susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 Serological Response in Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Multinational Analysis From the ICARUS-IBD Consortium.

Background: Beyond systematic reviews and meta-analyses, there have been no direct studies of serological response to COVID-19 in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) across continents. In particular, there has been limited data from Asia, with no data reported from India. The ICARUS-IBD (International study of COVID-19 Antibody Response Under Sustained immunosuppression in IBD) consortium assessed serological response to SARS-CoV-2 in patients with IBD in North America, Europe, and Asia.

A Biological Approach to Building Resilience and Wellness Capacity Among Police Exposed to Posttraumatic Stress Injuries: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Law enforcement officers are routinely exposed to hazardous, disturbing events that can impose severe stress and long-term psychological trauma. As a result, police and other public safety personnel (PSP) are at increased risk of developing posttraumatic stress injuries (PTSIs) and disruptions to the autonomic nervous system (ANS). ANS functioning can be objectively and noninvasively measured by heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV), and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA).

RNA silencing is a crucial mechanism of the antiviral immunity system in plants. Small RNAs guide Argonaut proteins to target viral RNA or DNA, preventing virus accumulation. Small RNA profiles in line PI 420328 with tolerance to cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus (CYSDV) were compared with those in Gold Star, a susceptible cultivar.

Genetically engineered sheep: A new paradigm for future preclinical testing of biological heart valves.

Background: Heart valve implantation in juvenile sheep to demonstrate biocompatibility and physiologic performance is the accepted model for regulatory approval of new biological heart valves (BHVs). However, this standard model does not detect the immunologic incompatibility between the major xenogeneic antigen, galactose-α-1,3-galactose (Gal), which is present in all current commercial BHVs, and patients who universally produce anti-Gal antibody. This clinical discordance leads to induced anti-Gal antibody in BHV recipients, promoting tissue calcification and premature structural valve degeneration, especially in young patients.

During the past several years, reference genomes have been generated for >20 cucurbit species, and variome and transcriptome profiling data have been rapidly accumulated for cucurbits.
