Prophylaxis for infective endocarditis: antibiotic sensitivity of dental plaque.

The antibiotic sensitivity pattern of bacteria isolated from bacteraemia after dental extraction was compared with that of bacteria isolated from dental plaque samples from the same patient. The results supported the current practice of using penicillin and erythromycin empirically for prophylaxis. The prediction of the most appropriate antibiotic for prophylaxis using dental plaque samples was most accurate when the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of plaque isolates were used.

Biochemical pharmacology and toxicology of formycin alone and in combination with 2'-deoxycoformycin (pentostatin).

The toxicology and pharmacology of formycin both as a single agent and combined with the adenosine deaminase inhibitor 2'-deoxycoformycin (dCF) were examined in outbred Swiss mice heterozygous for the nude gene (nu/+). The LD10 for formycin alone given on a daily x 5 schedule was 21 mg/kg. When the animals were pretreated with 1 mg/kg of dCF 1 hour prior to each dose of formycin, toxicity was approximately doubled, ie, LD10 was reduced to 10 mg/kg.

Evaluation of histological grading (Gleason) in carcinoma of the prostate: adverse influence of highest grade.

The value of the Gleason system of histological grading in carcinoma of the prostate is a subject of considerable controversy. The value of this system is demonstrated in a group of 488 patients treated radically with radiation therapy. Analysis, utilizing the Gleason system in these patients, indicates that the worst histological grade identified is most important in determining the prognosis.

Scanning electron microscopic observations of the surface of the initial lesion in experimental streptococcal endocarditis in the rabbit.

The surfaces of vegetations in the first 24 h after initiation of experimental streptococcal endocarditis in rabbits were examined systematically using the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Most of the observed fields were occupied by amorphous material but with the SEM very small features of interest could be identified. Erythrocytes were more frequent before 6 h and leukocytes were rarely seen.

Radiation therapy in the management of localized carcinoma of the prostate: a preliminary report.

Since 1970 a total of 107 patients has been treated radically with radiation therapy for carcinoma of the prostate. The local control with this form of treatment is over 90%. The five year actuarial survival is 74% and the disease-free survival 58%.
