The purpose of this investigation was to determine if the cyclic variations in the amount of arrestin mRNA that occur in the mouse retina during the light/dark cycle are controlled by light, a circadian clock, or both. In this study, an experimental paradigm was designed and used to distinguish among these molecular mechanisms. The data show that the initiation and the maintenance of an increased rate of syntheses of arrestin mRNA requires light and is not dependent on the time of day.

A study of the correlations between scores on the Matrix Analogies Test--Short Form and the WISC--R was conducted with 39 students enrolled in a Saturday program for the intellectually gifted. The Matrix Analogies Test was group-administered and WISC--R scores were obtained from records required for entry into the program. A significant Pearson r of .

Objective: To identify and quantify the major external (nongenetic) factors that contribute to death in the United States.

Data Sources: Articles published between 1977 and 1993 were identified through MEDLINE searches, reference citations, and expert consultation. Government reports and complications of vital statistics and surveillance data were also obtained.

Objective: To compare three glucose meters modified for use by individuals with diabetes and visual impairment regarding accuracy, precision, and clinical reliability.

Research Design And Methods: Ten subjects with diabetes and visual impairment performed self-monitoring of blood glucose using each of the three commercially available blood glucose meters modified for visually impaired users (the AccuChek Freedom [Boehringer Mannheim, Indianapolis, IN], the Diascan SVM [Home Diagnostics, Eatontown, NJ], and the One Touch [Lifescan, Milpitas, CA]). The meters were independently evaluated by a laboratory technologist for precision and accuracy determinations.

A 23-kDa, soluble, calcium-binding photoreceptor-specific protein (23-kDa) has been shown to be identical to recoverin and the cancer-associated retinopathy protein. Recoverin has been reported to activate guanylate cyclase to increase the amount of cyclic GMP and thereby reopen cation channels within the photoreceptor cells. In this study, the 23-kDa protein was purified from bovine retinas and monospecific antibodies against it were generated in rabbits.

Implementing comprehensive school health programs presents one of our nation's key challenges for the 1990s and beyond. Whether we are talking about Goals 2000 or Healthy People 2000, we will meet the challenge only through the combined efforts of the education and health sectors working as partners at the national, state, and community levels and, perhaps most importantly, at the level of the individual elementary and secondary schools.

The deduced amino acid sequence of the recently cloned mouse 23kD photoreceptor cell-specific protein showed it to be identical to the recoverin protein and the CAR (cancer-associated retinopathy) protein. DNA sequence variants were found in the mouse recoverin gene (Rcvrn), and segregation analysis of restriction fragment length variants in recombinant inbred strains of mice assigned Rcvrn to mouse Chromosome (Chr) 11, between Sparc (3.7 map units) and Zfp-3 (2.

The Healthy People 2000 initiative challenges the United States to improve the health profile of Americans through a prevention agenda targeting improvements in health status and health service delivery and reduction of risk for disease and disability. Clinical laboratories play an important role in achieving these national health goals and objectives. Many specific objectives directly target improved laboratory services, whereas others are fundamentally dependent on access to better laboratory services.
