Atmospheric electrical discharges are now known to generate unexpectedly large amounts of the atmosphere's primary oxidant, hydroxyl (OH), in thunderstorm anvils, where electrical discharges are caused by atmospheric charge separation. The question is "Do other electrical discharges also generate large amounts of oxidants?" In this paper, we demonstrate that corona formed on grounded metal objects under thunderstorms produce extreme amounts of OH, hydroperoxyl (HO), and ozone (O). Hundreds of parts per trillion to parts per billion of OH and HO were measured during seven thunderstorms that passed over the rooftop site during an air quality study in Houston, TX in summer 2006.

Lightning increases the atmosphere's ability to cleanse itself by producing nitric oxide (NO), leading to atmospheric chemistry that forms ozone (O) and the atmosphere's primary oxidant, the hydroxyl radical (OH). Our analysis of a 2012 airborne study of deep convection and chemistry demonstrates that lightning also directly generates the oxidants OH and the hydroperoxyl radical (HO). Extreme amounts of OH and HO were discovered and linked to visible flashes occurring in front of the aircraft and to subvisible discharges in electrified anvil regions.

The global burden of cancer, severe diagnostic bottlenecks in underserved regions, and underfunded health care systems are fueling the need for inexpensive, rapid, and treatment-informative diagnostics. On the basis of advances in computational optics and deep learning, we have developed a low-cost digital system, termed AIDA (artificial intelligence diffraction analysis), for breast cancer diagnosis of fine needle aspirates. Here, we show high accuracy (>90%) in (i) recognizing cells directly from diffraction patterns and (ii) classifying breast cancer types using deep-learning-based analysis of sample aspirates.

Associations between vocally expressed emotional arousal, influence tactics, and demand/withdraw behavior were examined in a treatment-seeking sample of 130 seriously and stably distressed, married, heterosexual couples and in a community sample (N = 38) of 18 married heterosexual and 20 dating heterosexual couples. Fundamental frequency was used to measure emotional arousal, and computational linguistics were used to measure influence tactics. Higher levels of demand/withdraw behavior were associated with greater use of manipulative and controlling influence tactics, higher levels of emotional arousal, and less frequent use of cooperative and compromising influence tactics.

The demand-withdraw interaction pattern has been extensively studied and consistently linked to relationship quality in cross-sex relationships, but it has received little study using observational data in same-sex relationships. Demand-withdraw behavior, which occurs when 1 partner makes a complaint or request for a change and the other partner avoids the request or withdraws from the discussion (Christensen, 1988), was observationally coded in the problem-solving interactions of 75 (20 unmarried lesbian, 15 unmarried gay male, 20 unmarried straight cohabiting, and 20 married straight) couples. Results revealed that same- and cross-sex couples engage in demanding and withdrawing behaviors in highly similar ways.

The Association of California Nurse Leaders has developed an initiative to require the baccalaureate in nursing as the credential for entry into practice as a registered nurse by the year 2010 in the state of California. When nursing is compared to other healthcare professions, such as pharmacy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy, it becomes obvious that educational requirements for nurses must be updated. Nursing leaders have developed a 10-year action plan to change the entry-level educational requirements for California nurses.

Patients with common variable immunodeficiency (CVI) generally fail to produce antigen-specific IgG. We have identified a lymphokine called high molecular weight B cell growth factor (HMW BCGF) that expands an IgG-producing subpopulation of B cells. The B cells from 15 of 16 patients with CVI evaluated in this study failed to proliferate to HMW BCGF, although they proliferated normally to another BCGF, low molecular weight BCGF (LMW BCGF).

The activation of resting B cells with anti-surface Ig is associated with transient increases in intracellular calcium. In the present study, we demonstrate that stimulation of B cells which have already been activated by Staphylococcus aureus Cowan I (Sac), with high molecular weight B cell growth factor (HMW-BCGF) or low molecular weight B cell growth factor (LMW-BCGF), but not IL-2, IL-4, or interferon-gamma, is associated with an increase in intracellular calcium, which is modest compared to that seen with anti-Ig (approximately 100 nM vs approximately 400 nM). The increases in intracellular calcium induced by HMW-BCGF or LMW-BCGF occur in distinct but overlapping subpopulations of B cells.

Treatment of refractory PD with autologous adrenal medullary implants utilizing two-stage surgery warrants further investigation. This transplantation technique is associated with prolonged transplant area BBB disruption which may require a change in medical treatment strategies including the withdrawal of peripheral dopa decarboxylase inhibitors and possible intravenous or intraventricular dopamine therapy. Of 5 patients receiving adrenal medullary transplants, 3 have demonstrated varying degrees of clinical improvement which has persisted for the duration of the study.
