drug resistance is emerging and new drug targets are needed. Tryptophan biosynthesis is necessary for replication and virulence. Indole-3-glycerol phosphate synthase (IGPS) catalyzes a step in tryptophan biosynthesis and has been suggested as a potential anti-infective target, but our understanding of this enzyme is limited.

Many health and social care (HSC) professionals have faced overwhelming pressures throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. As the current situation is constantly changing, and some restrictions across the UK countries such as social distancing and mask wearing in this period (May-July 2021) began to ease, it is important to examine how this workforce has been affected and how employers can help rebuild their services. The aim of this study was to compare cross-sectional data collected from the HSC workforce in the UK at three time points during the COVID-19 pandemic: Phase 1 (May-July 2020), Phase 2 (November 2020-January 2021) and Phase 3 (May-July 2021).

Nurse, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs), along with other health and social care colleagues are the backbone of healthcare services. They have played a key role in responding to the increased demands on healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper compares cross-sectional data on quality of working life, wellbeing, coping and burnout of nurses, midwives and AHPs in the United Kingdom (UK) at two time points during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Introduction: Healthcare providers (HCPs) may face numerous dilemmas in optimally screening, diagnosing, and treating patients with, and/or at risk for, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study aimed to achieve a greater understanding of the challenges in HCC care which in turn could delineate HCP educational opportunities within this oncologic sub-specialty.

Methods: A mixed-methods approach was used to identify practice gaps and clinical barriers experienced by US-based medical oncologists, hepatologists, oncology physician assistants, oncology nurse practitioners, and interventional radiologists involved in HCC care.

Objectives: T3 disease comprises heterogeneous morphologic characteristics, a variation only further complicated when in the context of N2-confirmed involvement. This study aims to examine whether or not specific features of T3 N2 non-small cell lung cancer are associated with improved 5-year overall survival when using a multimodal therapeutic approach consistent with guideline recommendations compared with definitive surgery alone.

Methods: Patients with pathologic T3 N2 non-small cell lung cancer were identified in the National Cancer Database.

Students' ability to reach their potential in school-both behaviourally and academically - is linked to their educator's knowledge of child and adolescent development, childhood adversity and trauma, and how these impact learning and behaviour. However, teacher pre-service training programmes often offer inadequate instruction to meet the needs of trauma-impacted students. The purpose of the study was to investigate the benefits of professional development training in trauma-informed approaches on school personnel attitudes and compassion fatigue.

Stress from cumulative adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can pose a serious risk of experiencing anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders in adolescence. However, there is a paucity of research identifying specific profiles or combinations of exposure to other forms of stressful life events and their impact on adolescent psychopathology. This study attempted a conceptual expansion of the ACE checklist by examining these stressful events.

Article Synopsis
  • 'Getting Involved in Research' is a program designed to educate individuals with lived experience in health and social care about research participation.
  • The evaluation involved 35 participants, primarily female, with ages ranging from 19 to 73, using a mixed method design to analyze their experiences and perceptions of the program.
  • The study identified six key themes reflecting participants’ positive feedback on the training's relevance, its interactive format, and the motivation it provided for future research involvement.

Water fluoridation is commonly cited as one of the greatest health achievements of the 20th century because of its effectiveness in reducing the incidence of dental caries. Despite the breadth of research on the subject, little is known about how variation in the composition of municipal water may affect the uptake of fluoride by tooth enamel. This study addressed this issue by developing a model system for testing fluoride uptake into hydroxyapatite, the primary mineral of tooth enamel, to investigate how varying water composition influences fluoride uptake.

Objectives: Visceral pleural invasion (VPI) guidelines, for tumours ≤4 cm are ambiguous. Non-small-cell lung cancers (NSCLCs) 3 to ≤4 cm are assigned the T2a designation. Similarly, any tumours with VPI, smaller than 3 cm, are upstaged and also assigned the same T2a designation.

The mechanism by which human cytotrophoblast cells (CTB) differentiate into extravillous trophoblast cells (EVT) is an epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Polarized CTB, anchored in an epithelial layer, are transformed into motile, non-polar EVT which invade the uterus. Our previous research has shown that over gestation, invasive first trimester EVT are converted to a non-invasive phenotype showing a reduced degree of EMT.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the importance and explore the inclusion of forensic nursing concepts in undergraduate nursing curricula.

Methods: This study used a mixed method design to survey undergraduate nurse educators (n=1,000) across the United States. Utilizing a convergent parallel design, data were analyzed independently, sequentially, and combined to synthesize the results and cultivate the overall conceptualization of the findings.

Background: Positive mediastinal lymph nodes, a marker for systemic disease, and positive margins, a marker for local disease, following resection of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are forms of residual disease. The objective of this study is to compare survival of patients with residual disease and to study the effect of receipt of guideline vs. non-guideline concordant care.

Background: The utility of adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) after neoadjuvant therapy and curative intent surgery for clinical stage IIIA (cIIIA) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is not defined. We sought to evaluate the contribution of AC to overall survival (OS) in patients with cIIIA NSCLC who underwent neoadjuvant therapy followed by curative intent surgical resection.

Methods: The National Cancer Database was queried from 2010 to 2016 for patients with cIIIA NSCLC who underwent curative intent surgical resection after neoadjuvant therapy.

Background: According to practice guidelines, patients with clinical stage T1-2 node-negative small-cell lung cancer are candidates for surgical resection. However, the role of pneumonectomy in small-cell lung cancer patients is not well understood. The objective of this study was to assess the extent to which pneumonectomy is used and to evaluate the survival implications for small-cell lung cancer patients who underwent pneumonectomy.

Planning for future health and social services (HSS) workforces must be informed by an understanding of how workers view their work within the context of their life and the challenges they will face across the course of life. There is a range of policies and provisions that states and organisations can adopt to create sustainable careers, support wellbeing at work, and extend working lives where appropriate, but the potential impact of these policies on the make-up of the workforce remains under investigation. This paper makes the case that service planners need to appreciate complex interplay between wellbeing and career decisions when planning the future workforce.
