Article Synopsis
  • High-flow oxygen therapy is being increasingly used for children with acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure (AHRF), but evidence on its effectiveness is limited; this study aimed to evaluate its feasibility compared to standard oxygen therapy.
  • In a pilot study involving 563 children aged 0-16, those receiving high-flow oxygen had a lower treatment failure rate (11.7%) compared to standard oxygen (18.1%), particularly in those with obstructive airway disease.
  • Despite no significant differences in ICU admissions or hospital stay duration, the findings suggest that high-flow oxygen is a viable option for treating AHRF in children outside of the ICU, paving the way for larger trials.

A probabilistic forecast is one that assigns a probability (or likelihood) to the occurrence of an event. Radiologists commonly make probabilistic judgments in their reports, even if these predictions are not explicitly expressed as numbers. There are calls for radiologists to commit to their probabilistic predictions in a standardized fashion; however, without a mechanism for feedback, there is no opportunity for improvement.

Objective: There is no consensus on which risk stratification approach to use for thromboprophylaxis in pregnancy, and most available risk assessment models (RAMs) for venous thromboembolism (VTE) events have not been validated in pregnancy. Our objective was to compare the performance of some of the most commonly used VTEs RAMs in our patient population in the peripartum period.

Study Design: This is a retrospective cohort of women who delivered at our institution in 2015 and 2016.

Enlargement of kidney tubules is a common feature of multiple cystic kidney diseases in humans and mice. However, while some of these pathologies are characterized by cyst expansion and organ enlargement, in others, progressive interstitial fibrosis and kidney atrophy prevail. The Kif3a knockout mouse is an established non-orthologous mouse model of cystic kidney disease.

Hedgehog (Hh) is an evolutionary conserved signaling pathway that has important functions in kidney morphogenesis and adult organ maintenance. Recent work has shown that Hh signaling is reactivated in the kidney after injury and is an important mediator of progressive fibrosis. Pericytes and fibroblasts have been proposed to be the principal cells that respond to Hh ligands, and pharmacological attenuation of Hh signaling has been considered as a possible treatment for fibrosis, but the effect of Hh inhibition on tubular epithelial cells after kidney injury has not been reported.

miRNAs (miR) have been shown to modulate critical gene transcripts involved in tumorigenesis, but their role in tumor-mediated immunosuppression is largely unknown. On the basis of miRNA gene expression in gliomas using tissue microarrays, in situ hybridization, and molecular modeling, miR-124 was identified as a lead candidate for modulating STAT3 signaling, a key pathway mediating immunosuppression in the tumor microenvironment. miR-124 is absent in all grades and pathologic types of gliomas.

Upstream events that trigger initiation of cell division, at a point called START in yeast, determine the overall rates of cell proliferation. The identity and complete sequence of those events remain unknown. Previous studies relied mainly on cell size changes to identify systematically genes required for the timely completion of START.

Melanoma is a common and deadly tumor that upon metastasis to the central nervous system (CNS) has median survival duration of less than 5 months. Activation of the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) has been identified as a key mediator that drives the fundamental components of melanoma. We hypothesized that WP1066, a novel inhibitor of STAT3 signaling, would enhance the antitumor activity of cyclophosphamide (CTX) against melanoma, including disease within the CNS.

Higher incidences of osteoporosis and osteopenia are found in cancer patients, particularly in women receiving aromatase inhibitors or with chemotherapy-induced ovarian failure, or in men with prostate cancer and androgen deprivation therapy. Therefore, management of long-term bone health is emerging as an important aspect of comprehensive cancer care. Patients with cancer typically have a number of additional risk factors for osteoporosis that should prompt screening, regardless of patient age or sex.

Multislice CT (MSCT), which allows for shorter scan times and thinner slice sections than single-slice helical CT (SSHCT), will likely increase the demands on picture imaging and communication system (PACS) resources. Weekly averages for number of images per study (IPS) were collected from MSCT and SSHCT scanners from 1-01 to 7-01. Average cycle times (ACT) and number of studies per patient (ANSPP) were analyzed from two MSCT and SSHCT scanners for the period of 1-1-00 to 4-1-01, and 4-1-01 to 8-1-01.
