Breast cancer risk according to electric blanket or mattress cover use was examined as part of a multicenter population-based case-control study. Breast cancer patients 50-79 years of age (N = 1949) were identified from statewide tumor registries in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin from the period June 1994 to July 1995.

A 50-year-old man presented with a left-sided neck mass. Clinical examination revealed a large fluctuant 7 cm x 7 cm mass in the left posterior triangle. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an encapsulated soft tissue lesion.

Benign fibroepithelial polyps of the renal pelvis are rare. Although many ureteral fibroepithelial polyps have been reported, there are, to our knowledge, only 20+ reported cases in the renal pelvis. We report herein the clinical and pathologic features of fibroepithelial polyp of the renal pelvis and provide a detailed review of the literature.

Effects of retrograde femoral intramedullary nailing on the patellofemoral articulation.

Objective: To determine the patellofemoral contact areas as well as mean and maximal pressures after retrograde intramedullary nailing in a cadaveric model.

Study Design: Pressure-sensitive film was used to analyze patellofemoral joint pressures after insertion of a retrograde femoral nail in a cadaveric specimen.

Methods: A retrograde femoral nail was inserted into seven cadaveric knees.

Using pressure-sensitive film, we measured the patellofemoral contact areas and pressures after increasing degrees of notchplasty in eight fresh-frozen cadaveric knee specimens. Each specimen was stabilized on an axial loading frame with physiologic loads applied through the quadriceps tendon at varying flexion angles. The patellofemoral joint was loaded at 90 degrees, 105 degrees and 120 degrees of knee flexion.

Giant polypoid basal cell carcinoma.

Basal cell carcinomas may attain giant proportions due primarily to recurrence and neglect. Giant basal cell carcinomas (5 cm or more in diameter) are of four clinical subtypes: noduloulcerative, morpheaform, superficial, and polypoid. We report a patient with a typical polypoid lesion of fifteen years' duration on his shoulder.

Nonlinear-approximation technique for determining vertical ozone-concentration profiles with a differential-absorption lidar.

A new technique is presented for the retrieval of ozone-concentration profiles (O(3)) from backscattered signals obtained by a multiwavelength differential-absorption lidar (DIAL). The technique makes it possible to reduce erroneous local fluctuations induced in the ozone-concentration profiles by signal noise and other phenomena such as aerosol inhomogeneity. Before the O(3) profiles are derived, the dominant measurement errors are estimated and uncertainty boundaries for the measured profiles are established.

The use of the middle third of a patellar tendon with bone blocks is a common and well-accepted technique for arthroscopic reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament. We report here a disconcerting fracture/avulsion pattern of the patella/patellar tendon mechanism that occurred in the early postoperative period.

Differential absorption lidar measurement of vertical ozone profiles in the troposphere that contains aerosol layers with strong backscattering gradients: a simplified version.

A technique for determining approximate ozone-concentration profiles from differential absorption lidar (DIAL) data obtained in the troposphere with large gradients of aerosol backscattering is presented. The atmospheric interferences are defined as errors of the off-on DIAL signal ratio; the interferences are separated and removed before the ratio is differentiated. To facilitate the separation of the regular (subjected to differentiation) component of the signal ratio from random noise, the ratio is transformed into an intermediate function, and the measurement error is minimized by fitting of an analytical function to the transformed function.

Use of kidneys from older cadaver donors for renal transplantation.

From 1971-1990, 51 patients underwent renal transplantation with a kidney from a cadaver donor more than fifty-five years of age. Following transplantation, 19 kidneys (37%) functioned immediately while initial nonfunction occurred with 32 kidneys (63%). The one-year graft survival rate for kidneys with immediate function versus initial nonfunction was 84 percent and 63 percent, respectively.

Reconstruction of the severely atrophic maxilla with autogenous iliac bone graft and hydroxylapatite/decalcified freeze-dried bone allograft in the same patient: a preliminary report.

Procedures to augment the severely atrophic maxilla using sinus lift techniques have been increasingly used for endosseous implant placement. A case report is presented in which a patient had a severely resorbed maxilla bilaterally. A situation developed during the course of treatment which created a unique opportunity to compare an autogenous iliac graft on one side with a hydroxylapatite/freeze-dried bone allograft on the other.

Novel piperidine sigma receptor ligands as potential antipsychotic drugs.

sigma receptor ligands represent a new class of potential antipsychotic drugs. This paper presents the structure-activity relationships leading to novel disubstituted piperidine sigma ligands, which have little or no affinity for dopamine D2 receptors. Selectivity for sigma sites over dopamine D2 or serotonin 5-HT2 receptors appears to be governed by the chemical nature of the piperidine nitrogen substituent, its distance from the basic nitrogen, and its orientation relative to the other piperidine substituent.

Progressive albuminuria and glomerulosclerosis in a rat model of chronic renal allograft rejection.

A significant proportion of renal allografts fail within several months or years after transplantation, primarily because of chronic rejection. The etiology and pathophysiology of this condition remain unclear. We studied the renal function, morphology, and immunohistology, in parallel, among F344-to-Lewis allografts (n = 23) and isografts (n = 13) over the course of 24 weeks.

This case illustrates the importance of investigating such claims. Mycetoma is a tumorous infection of skin and subcutaneous tissue. It is caused by either actinomycotic bacteria or eumycotic fungi. The three cardinal features are tumefaction or the appearance of indolent inflammatory nodules and secondary fibrosis, formation of sinus tracts and fistulas that may have the ability to penetrate deep tissue, and the presence of grains or granules in the affected tissue and discharge.

Effects of ovariectomy on thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue and liver in Syrian hamsters.

Weight gain in ovariectomized Syrian hamsters occurs without increased food intake, which suggests that metabolic efficiency may be enhanced through a reduction in energy expenditure. We examined the effect of ovariectomy on metabolic activity in brown adipose tissue and liver. Four groups of hamsters (n = 13, each) were killed 0, 2, 4, or 16 weeks following ovariectomy.

Carbon dioxide laser vaporization of recalcitrant symptomatic plaques of Hailey-Hailey disease and Darier's disease.

Carbon dioxide laser vaporization of localized, recalcitrant intertriginous plaques was done in two patients with Hailey-Hailey disease and two patients with Darier's disease. After treatment, only one patient had recurrence in one treatment site. All patients had significant clinical and symptomatic improvement.
