Little is known about the iron status of Hispanic groups in the United States. Data from the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used to estimate the prevalence of impaired Fe status for persons aged 5-74 y from three Hispanic groups: Mexican Americans (MAs), Cubans, and Puerto Ricans; prevalences were also calculated for non-Hispanic whites (NHWs) and non-Hispanic blacks (NHBs) using data from the second National Health and Nutrition Examination survey. A three-variable model called the MCV model was used to assess impaired Fe status.

In the mouse pre-B-cell line 18-81, cells can switch production in vitro from immunoglobulin mu chain to gamma 2b chain. The gene encoding the gamma 2b chain is created by a rearrangement of the mu gene. This rearrangement always takes place within a homolog.

Thirty-seven girls and twelve boys who had been sexually abused at an average of 2.6 years previously were traced and reviewed. The nonoffending parents participated in a structured interview and the children were assessed using the Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale and the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist.

Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) has the characteristics of an autoimmune disease, triggered by cross-reactive antigens shared by the group A streptococcus and a variety of tissues including the heart, endothelium, and basal ganglia. Using two parameters of cellular reactivity, migration inhibition and blastogenic transformation, ARF patients from Trinidad show significant lymphocyte reactivity to streptococcal antigens, particularly those from an ARF associated streptococcal strain. This reactivity, studied over a 2-year period, peaked at 1 to 6 months after the acute onset and remained significantly elevated for at least 2 years.

A complex serologic investigation resulted in identification of the second example of separable anti-Rh33. A patient who had been transfused frequently and who had red cells that lacked a portion or portions of the D mosaic of antigens made anti-D against that portion of D missing from her red cells, anti-c, anti-V, anti-Rh33, anti-K, and an autoantibody that mimicked the reactions of anti-D. Differential adsorption experiments showed that the anti-Rh33 was separable from the other antibodies present.

In aprotic media the electrochemical reduction of dioxygen yields superoxide ion (O2-), which is an effective Brønsted base, nucleophile, one-electron reductant, and one-electron oxidant of reduced transition metal ions. With electrophilic substrates (organic halides and carbonyl carbons) O2- displaces a leaving group to form a peroxy radical (ROO.) in the primary process.

The permeability of the blood-brain barrier to noradrenaline was estimated in rats with bile duct ligation by intracarotid injection of [14C]-L-noradrenaline, 3H2O, and [113mIn]ethylene diamine tetraacetate (EDTA) under pentobarbitone anaesthesia. Brain uptake of [14C]noradrenaline was expressed as a percentage of that of 3H2O (brain uptake index, BUI) and corrected for the "blood background" by the 113mIn. The BUI of noradrenaline (1.

In a double-blind, crossover study to determine the efficacy of cromolyn sodium in chronic perennial allergic rhinitis five of 12 patients with significant sneezing problems and four of 12 patients with significant rhinorrhea showed major improvement after a four-week course of the drug. Nasal eosinophils disappeared in five of six patients after a course of cromolyn sodium.

Single-stranded reovirus RNA, synthesized in vitro by reovirus cores, functioned as messenger RNA in cell-free extracts prepared from several mammalian cells: Krebs II mouse ascites cells, mouse L cells, Chinese hamster ovary cells, HeLa cells, and rabbit reticulocytes. As shown by acrylamide gel electrophoresis, all eight polypeptides known to be specified by reovirus were synthesized in the reticulocyte system. In the other extracts, from 5 to 7 complete virus proteins were made.
