Triage: a literature review 1985-1993.

Following an extensive literature review of Accident and Emergency (A & E) nursing from 1985-1993, the authors focused upon triage. A wide range of issues related to triage and its use in A & E departments are examined. An appendix is included to clarify major research finds in this area.

Optimization of Applied Biosystems 373 sequencer stretch modification.

We have optimized the conditions for using the Stretch modification for the Applied Biosystems 373 Automated DNA Sequencers for sequencing double-stranded DNA using 34-cm well-to-read and 48-cm well-to-read configurations. With the manufacturer's recommended settings, uneven spacing within the first 100 bases was observed, which led to miscalls, insertions and deletions in the analyzed data. A significant decrease in accuracy for reads greater than 400 bases was also observed.

Influence of carbon and nitrogen sources on glutathione catabolic enzymes in Candida albicans during dimorphism.

The effect of carbon sources, glucose and sucrose, and nitrogen sources such as ammonia, glutamate and L-citrulline on the activities of glutathione metabolic enzymes has been studied. Yeast and mycelial cells were used to identify changes in activity levels of glutathione reductase (GSSGR), glutathione transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT). Enzyme activities from cells grown in sucrose media were lower than in glucose media regardless of the enzyme tested, morphological form, or the growth interval.

Grief support in accident and emergency nursing: a literature review 1985-1993.

On completing a wide ranging review of literature related to Accident and Emergency (A & E) nursing, the authors chose to focus upon grief support. The literature ranges from personal experiences to large scale research. A table of studies is included to clarify major research findings in this area.

Psychosis in an adolescent patient with Wilson's disease: effects of chelation therapy.

Wilson's disease is a rare genetic disorder involving the liver and brain, with onset frequently in adolescence. Psychiatric symptoms are often the first manifestation of the disease and can obscure the diagnosis. Chelation therapy can reverse the fatal outcome of untreated patients, so early detection is critically important.

Emotional availability in infants' relationships with multiple caregivers.

Emotional availability was rated in infants' relationships with significant caregivers over a nine-month period. Infant responsivity to and involvement of caregivers was found to be related to individual sensitivity, while each relationship appeared to be unique, and not based on the nature of the infants' relationships with their mothers.

Phosphoinositide hydrolysis by phospholipase C modulated by multivalent cations La(3+), Al(3+), neomycin, polyamines, and melittin.

Second messenger production from phosphoinositide hydrolysis is regulated by different pathways, such as G-proteins or tyrosine phosphorylation of phosphoinositide phospholipase C (PI-PLC). Another means of altering the activity of PI-PLC is through cation interaction with the phosphoinositide substrate. A variety of organic and inorganic multi-valent cations were examined for their effects on the activity of purified PI-PLC delta.

Inhibition of topoisomerase II catalytic activity by pyridoacridine alkaloids from a Cystodytes sp. ascidian: a mechanism for the apparent intercalator-induced inhibition of topoisomerase II.

Several new pyridoacridine alkaloids, dehydrokuanoniamine B (1), shermilamine C (2), and cystodytin J (3), in addition to the known compounds cystodytin A (4), kuanoniamine D (5), shermilamine B (6), and eilatin (7), were isolated from a Fijian Cystodytes sp. ascidian. Their structures were determined by analyses of spectroscopic data.

Enzymatic and nonenzymatic ADP-ribosylation of cysteine.

Mono-ADP-ribosylation is a protein modification that occurs at a number of different amino acids, dictated by the specificity of the individual ADP-ribosyltransferases. A specific cysteine in several guanine nucleotide-binding regulatory proteins is ADP-ribosylated by the bacterial protein pertussis toxin. Recent purification of an ADP-ribosylcysteine hydrolase and NAD:cysteine ADP-ribosyltransferase, and detection of ADP-ribose-cysteine linkages in tissue samples has raised hope that an endogenous regulatory cysteine-specific ADP-ribosylation pathway exists.

Nitric oxide and NAD-dependent protein modification.

Nitric oxide (NO) has been suggested to act as a regulator of endogenous intracellular ADP-ribosylation, based on radiolabelling of proteins in tissue homogenates incubated with [32P]NAD and NO. After the NO-stimulated modification was replicated in a defined system containing only the purified acceptor protein, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), the hypothesis of NO-stimulation of an endogenous ADP-ribosyltransferase became moot. The NO-stimulated, NAD-dependent modification of GAPDH was recently characterized as covalent binding of the whole NAD molecule to the enzyme, not ADP-ribosylation.

A general theory for modeling capture-recapture data from a closed population.

A general theory for estimating the size of a closed population from multiple-recapture data is presented. This theory is easily extended to open population models for multiple-recapture data. Estimation is based on a log-linear model developed for modeling dependent capture-recapture data when capture probabilities vary temporally with behavioral response and are heterogeneous among animals.

Pineal region: rare location of a cavernous haemangioma.

Cavernous haemangiomas are commonly located within the central nervous system. There are only 11 cases of this malformation found in the pineal region reported in the literature, and only four of them have documenting photomicrographs. Very little has been written about diagnostic features of these tumours when they occur in this area.

Stimulation of endogenous ADP-ribosylation by brefeldin A.

Brefeldin A (BFA) is a fungal metabolite that exerts profound and generally inhibitory actions on membrane transport. At least some of the BFA effects are due to inhibition of the GDP-GTP exchange on the ADP-ribosylation factor (ARF) catalyzed by membrane protein(s). ARF activation is likely to be a key event in the association of non-clathrin coat components, including ARF itself, onto transport organelles.

The influence of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration on infection control practice.

Beginning with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) activities to enforce the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention guidelines on Universal Precautions in 1987, this agency has had a direct and sustained impact on infection control programs. This article details how OSHA works, the OSHA inspection process, the bloodborne pathogens standard, current promulgation activities, other OSHA standards, OSHA reform, and the future of this agency.

Proteolytic cleavage of ACTH in corticotropes of sexually mature axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum).

Immunohistochemical analysis of the pituitary of sexually mature axolotls revealed both ACTH(1-39)-related and alpha-MSH-related immunoreactivity present in corticotropic cells located in the rostral anterior pituitary. Gel filtration analysis indicated that the ACTH(1-39)-sized immunoreactivity and the alpha-MSH-sized immunoreactivity detected in acid extracts of the axolotl anterior pituitary were present in a ratio in a range between 1:1 and 1:0.6.

Nitric oxide-stimulated modification of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) by [adenylate-32P]NAD has been interpreted in recent reports as ADP-ribosylation. Incubations of GAPDH with the NO-releasing agent sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and NAD resulted, however, in essentially equal incorporation of radiolabel from the adenine, phosphate, and nicotinamide moieties to the extent of approximately 0.02 mol of NAD.

CT, MRI, and angiographic findings of a highly aggressive malignant meningioma. A case report.

A case is presented of a highly aggressive malignant meningioma with its associated imaging findings. The case report is followed by a brief review of recognized findings of malignant meningiomas versus their benign counterparts and the accuracy of such findings in differentiating malignant from benign meningiomas.
