The Kolmogorov-Smirnov one-sample test is sometimes used to test seasonality in births or other annually cyclic phenomena. However, it is shown that the maximum deviation from expected (D) may differ by a factor of almost two if the cycle is initiated in different months. Thus, different results are possible from the same data.

Evaluation of arterial prostheses in a baboon ex vivo shunt: the effect of graft material and flow on platelet deposition.

Surface thrombogenicity is recognized as an important factor in the failure of small caliber vascular prostheses. The baboon ex vivo shunt was developed to study small caliber grafts under controlled conditions at different flow rates. The shunt was created by percutaneous insertion of catheters into the baboon femoral artery and vein.

The interaction of 111Indium-labeled platelets, and other blood components with the luminal surface of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) was determined using an ex vivo arteriovenous shunt in the baboon. Both PDMS and LDPE showed little platelet accumulation at either high (200 cc/min) flow rates. PDMS accumulated more platelets at low than at high flow.

Presently most noninvasive methods for assessing extracranial carotid disease have relied on hemodynamic change associated with significant stenosis. Recent evidence has suggested that both ulceration and/or plaque hemorrhage may frequently play an important role in the pathophysiology of carotid disease. To assess the ability of B-mode ultrasound to provide this anatomic information, in a prospective blinded manner we compared B-mode ultrasound and selective four-vessel arteriography to pathologic specimens obtained at the time of 89 carotid endarterectomies.

The granulocyte immunofluorescence test (GIFT) is valuable for detecting allogeneic and autologous granulocyte antibodies. However, the original tube technique (macro GIFT) requires 50-100 microliters of serum and 10(6) granulocytes with time-consuming washing steps which cause cell loss. We report a modification (micro GIFT) using microtiter trays which requires only 20 microliters of serum and 2 X 10(5) granulocytes.

Acoustic-reflex adaptation: morphology and half-life data for subjects with normal hearing.

Acoustic-reflex adaptation was studied in 35 subjects with normal hearing using nine pure-tone activators (250-6000 Hz) and a broadband-noise activator. The individual subject data generated by the 31-s activators presented 10 dB above the reflex threshold were digitized, corrected for baseline drift and ear canal volume, and analyzed in terms of the acoustic-admittance change in acoustic mmhos and in terms of the percentage of maximum-reflex magnitude. Reflex adaptation increased as a function of frequency.

Age-specific variation in the secular trend for stature: a comparison of samples from industrialized and nonindustrialized regions.

Age-specific secular trend patterns for children in industrialized world regions have a regular pattern, beginning low at age 6 and increasing to a maximum at age 10 to 14, then declining. While magnitude differs, the patterns are ordinarily parallel, especially in the female samples. However, age-specific secular trend values for children from developing regions, or from areas of industrialized countries not benefitting substantially from development, are irregular in pattern and magnitude.

Regional blood centers frequently need to hold units of whole blood at 20 to 24 degrees C for several hours after phlebotomy so that sufficient platelet concentrates can be prepared to meet the increasing need. We have evaluated the in vivo viability and in vitro properties of platelets that were prepared from whole blood drawn into citrate-phosphate-dextrose-adenine (CPDA-1) either immediately after phlebotomy or after an 8-hour hold at 20 to 24 degrees C. Platelet concentrates were stored for 5 days at 20 to 24 degrees C in polyolefin containers (PL 732, Fenwal) with end-over-end tumbler agitation.

The resting potential of "sodium-loaded' cardiac cells can transiently hyperpolarize to levels negative to the steady state resting potential [3,5,6]. Hyperpolarization is associated with the coupled efflux of Na+ and influx of K+ driven by an active transport process and may result from an increased K+ equilibrium potential (EK), an outward pump current or both. Using conventional microelectrode techniques, we found that Na+-loaded human atrial myocardium can also transiently hyperpolarize.

Aspirin decreases platelet uptake on Dacron vascular grafts in baboons.

Resolution of red cell compatibility testing problems in patients receiving anti-lymphoblast or anti-thymocyte globulin.

Passively acquired hemagglutinating antibodies may be detected in the serum of patients receiving horse anti-lymphoblast globulin (ALG) or anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG). Thirty-seven patients receiving ALG following renal transplantation were studied. Eight patients monitored daily all developed positive direct antiglobulin tests (DAT) and positive red cell antibody screening tests.
