It appears that up to 80% of females with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) have not been diagnosed by the age of 18. This translates to a prevalence of about 5-6%, and if true, has serious implications for female mental health. One way of finding the true value is to use Bayes' Theorem with a comorbid condition as a more easily recognizable flag.

Universal Subsidized Continuous Glucose Monitoring Funding for Young People With Type 1 Diabetes: Uptake and Outcomes Over 2 Years, a Population-Based Study.

Objective: Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is increasingly used in type 1 diabetes management; however, funding models vary. This study determined the uptake rate and glycemic outcomes following a change in national health policy to introduce universal subsidized CGM funding for people with type 1 diabetes aged <21 years.

In Queensland, the majority of rural hospitals and some regional hospitals lack paediatricians or paediatric sub-specialists. Many specialist referrals result in a transfer to a tertiary paediatric hospital in Brisbane--up to 3000 km away. Travel is difficult, time-consuming and expensive, especially from rural and remote areas in Queensland.

Wireless telemedicine for the delivery of specialist paediatric services to the bedside.

A mobile interactive online health system was used to conduct virtual ward rounds at a regional hospital which had no specialist paediatrician. The system was wireless, which allowed telepaediatric services to be delivered direct to the bedside. Between December 2004 and May 2005, 43 virtual ward rounds were coordinated between specialists based in Brisbane and local staff at the Gladstone Hospital.

The family costs of attending hospital outpatient appointments via videoconference and in person.

We compared the costs incurred by families attending outpatient appointments at the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) in Brisbane with those incurred by families who had a consultation via videoconference in their regional area. In each category 200 families were interviewed. The median time spent travelling for videoconferences was 30 min compared with 80 min for face-to-face appointments.

Whenever something novel is introduced there are problems of implementation and operation, which may be formally expressed as risks. A comprehensive methodology has been developed to assess these risks, but it has not yet been extensively applied in the health sector. The point-of-referral barrier--a factor in the success of telehealth.

A feasibility study was carried out to test the hypothesis that, for an effective telehealth service, a full-time coordinator is required to act as a single point of contact for consultation requests. By shifting the responsibility for telepaediatrics from the referrer to the provider, the telehealth process becomes equally (or more) attractive as the conventional alternative. Preliminary results showed that, within six months, telepaediatric activity increased to an average of 8 h per month.

Grand rounds at the Royal Children's Hospital in Brisbane began to be conducted by videoconference in 1997. They were held each week and started at 07:45. A total of 44 multisite videoconferences were held in the year 2000, to an average of 10 sites in Queensland.

Hepatic glycogenosis: reversible hepatomegaly in type 1 diabetes.

Objective: To describe the aetiology, clinical features and appropriate treatment for hepatic glycogenosis in poorly controlled type 1 diabetes.

Methods: A review of three adolescents with poor diabetes control, hepatomegaly and elevated serum liver transaminase concentrations.

Results: Symptoms included abdominal pain, anorexia, nausea and vomiting.

Four related male infants presented with neonatal diabetes mellitus, immune dysregulation with extremely high concentrations of immunoglobulin E, and intractable diarrhoea.
