There is a growing worry about the health of American democracy, and political scientists and pundits alike are looking for possible explanations. Surveys conducted during the Trump presidency showed considerable citizen support for liberal democratic norm erosions, especially among Republicans. However, recent experimental research also shows that voters of both parties are more tolerant of norm erosion committed by politicians of the party they prefer.

Malignant osteoblasts can have markedly pleomorphic phenotypes and variable amounts of tumour-associated matrix, complicating the ability of pathologists to accurately differentiate osteosarcoma (OSA) from other types of neoplasms using only histopathology. Current immunohistochemical markers for animals have limited sensitivity and specificity in identifying OSA or produce inconsistent results. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) for special AT-rich sequence-binding protein 2 (SATB2) has been used in human medicine to aid in identification of normal and neoplastic osteoblasts, and the objective of this study was to determine whether this marker could also be useful for the diagnosis of canine OSA.

Haploidentical hematopoietic cell transplantation (haplo-HCT) is associated with an increased risk of allograft rejection. Here, we employed a major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-mismatched allogeneic HCT (allo-HCT) murine model to better understand the role of Gal-1 in immune tolerance. Transplanted mice were classified into either rejected or engrafted based on donor chimerism levels.

Hydrologic reconstructions from North America are largely unknown for the Middle Miocene. Examination of fungal palynomorph assemblages coupled with traditional plant-based palynology permits delineation of local, as opposed to regional, climate signals and provides a baseline for study of ancient fungas. Here, the Fungi in a Warmer World project presents paleoecology and paleoclimatology of 351 fungal morphotypes from 3 sites in the United States: the Clarkia Konservat-Lagerstätte site (Idaho), the Alum Bluff site (Florida), and the Bouie River site (Mississippi).

Background: There are no established guidelines for the follow up of infants born after a prenatal diagnosis of a genomic copy number variant (CNV), despite their increased risk of developmental issues. The aims of this study were (i) to determine the perinatal outcomes of fetuses diagnosed with and without a CNV, and (ii) to establish a population-based paediatric cohort for long term developmental follow up.

Methods: An Australian state-wide research database was screened for pregnant individuals who had a prenatal chromosomal microarray (CMA) between 2013-2019 inclusive.

Although RNA is found in the seminal fluid of diverse organisms, it is unknown whether it is functional within females. We developed a proteomic method (VESPA, Variant Enabled SILAC Proteomic Analysis) to test the hypothesis that male seminal fluid RNA is translated by females. We found 67 male-derived, female-translated proteins (mdFTPs) in female lower reproductive tracts, many with predicted functions relevant to reproduction.

Background: Codeine was rescheduled in Australia to prescription only in February 2018. Initial studies reported an increase in population level paracetamol and ibuprofen sales following codeine upscheduling. However, to date no study has been able to investigate changes in non-opioid analgesic use at the individual patient level to determine if sales data reflect actual consumption patterns.

Neutrophils play important roles in inflammatory airway diseases. In this study, we assessed whether apolipoprotein A-I modifies neutrophil heterogeneity as part of the mechanism by which it attenuates acute airway inflammation. Neutrophilic airway inflammation was induced by daily intranasal administration of LPS plus house dust mite (LPS+HDM) to Apoa1-/- and Apoa1+/+ mice for 3 d.

Article Synopsis
  • Subperiosteal orbital abscesses (SPOAs) are common complications of acute bacterial sinusitis, particularly affecting children, and are usually treated conservatively unless patients do not improve.
  • This study analyzed data from 82 pediatric patients with medial SPOAs to establish a size threshold for predicting the need for surgical drainage.
  • Findings indicated that abscesses wider than 3.6 mm were significantly more likely to require surgical intervention, while no difference was found in drainage needs based on the abscess location (anterior vs posterior).

Delineating developmental events is central to experimental research using early life stages, permitting widespread identification of changes in event timing between species and environments. Yet, identifying developmental events is incredibly challenging, limiting the scale, reproducibility and throughput of using early life stages in experimental biology. We introduce Dev-ResNet, a small and efficient 3D convolutional neural network capable of detecting developmental events characterised by both spatial and temporal features, such as the onset of cardiac function and radula activity.

Women and children returning from areas formerly controlled by the Islamic State typically have experienced high levels of trauma and indoctrination, further complicating politically fraught efforts at reintegration and resettlement. Consequently, countries around the world are grappling with how best to manage the return of these women and children. To help better understand which types of programming can contribute to the successful, non-violent reintegration of these individuals, we incorporated ideas from existing Repatriation and Rehabilitation (R&R) literature, field practitioners, R&R subject matter experts, and literature from adjacent fields (e.
