We surveyed 77 persons with AIDS, their physicians and their social workers during the autumn of 1987 to ascertain health status and to quantify use of health services in Seattle, Washington. Participants included the majority (59%) of persons living with AIDS in the area. Information was gathered regarding demography, health status, functional status, medical history and the use of health services.

Objective: To determine if there was a difference in the long-term glycemic control, average daily dose, and cost of therapy in patients with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) treated with glyburide and glipizide in a health maintenance organization (HMO).
Design: Retrospective evaluation of medical and pharmacy records.
Setting: Multispecialty group practice HMO.

Counseling patients in preventive health measures may be considerably more difficult for the clinician than managing acute illnesses. It requires medical knowledge and assiduousness on the part of both patient and physician, facilitative systems, the cooperation of significant others, and longitudinal good communication between all of these persons to facilitate the kind of objective-setting necessary to make preventive medicine work. The spectrum of clinical preventive care for the elderly is considerable, and the breadth of communication competencies required for optimal effectiveness somewhat daunting.

Design: Prospective cohort study.
Setting: Medical wards of five Seattle tertiary care hospitals.

Measurement of clavicular length and circumference, and computation of clavicular robustness and length-circumference product from 724 autopsied adults of known age, sex, and body length between the ages of 15 and 96 years produced useful sex-predictive values. This predominantly North American white population contained 560 males and 164 females with intact, nondeformed clavicles. Clavicle length and circumference and particularly their product have been found useful in sexing, but robustness as a single trait has not.

Significant similarity to nominal a1 cDNA sequences was noted, but none of the latent sequences were completely a1-like. We have now probed a genomic library, produced from the same alpha 2 alpha 2 rabbit, for evidence of germline latent a1 VH genes.

Objective: As the treatment for HIV infection has improved, AIDS has become a chronic disease, and the demand for long-term care has increased. The authors studied a cohort of hospitalized persons with AIDS to determine the proportion and characteristics of AIDS patients who could appropriately be cared for in long-term care facilities with skilled nursing.
Design: Prospective cohort study.
This article examines pharmacist nd physician prescribing patterns during the first two years of the Florida Pharmacist Self-Care Consultant Law. Nineteen pharmacies were audited. The mandatory patient profiles were audited for a two-year period, and the prescription files were audited for a five-year period.

A program, written in dBASE, is described that manages demographic, sample, clinical laboratory, and restriction endonuclease map data. The program exports migration distances of DNA fragments resulting from specified endonuclease digests to a commercially available, but modified, curve fitting program (CURVE-FITTER) where the fragment sizes in base pairs are calculated. The calculated values are imported back into dBASE files for report generation or later analysis.

Anomalies of the sternal rib ends and costal cartilages, sternal foramina, and epi(supra)sternal bones from a large, modern autopsy population have been described. Rib abnormalities (duplications, fusions, and spurs) were found in 55 of 2,016 plastron roentgenograms, sternal foramina were found in 135, and episternal bones were found in 51. Sternal foramina were significantly more common in blacks than in whites and episternal bones more common in whites than blacks; rib anomalies had no recognizable racial predilection.
