The objective of this study was to evaluate attributes in semitendinosus muscle (ST) associated with tenderness in divergent breeds--Wagyu (W; n = 12), Limousin (L; n = 12), and Wagyu x Limousin cross cattle (WxL; n = 12)--fed two dietary treatments (0 or 6% sunflower oil, DM basis). A randomized complete block repeated measures design with a 3 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was used to measure effects of breed, diet, block, and associated interactions. Cattle were fed barley-based diets for an average of 259 d.

Ab initio calculations are reported for three of four possible conformers of 1,3-dichloropropane. The fourth conformer, with Cs symmetry, has a predicted enthalpy difference of more than 1500 cm(-1) from the most stable conformer from each calculation regardless of the basis set used, so there is little chance of observing it. Thus, there is no evidence in the infrared or Raman spectrum of the presence of a fourth conformer.

Context: The effectiveness of moving to compulsory, prescriptive continuing medical education (CME) for New Zealand general practitioners (GPs) is questioned. Motivational interviewing theory suggests that a series of interventions gradually increase awareness of the need to change until change is finally actioned. This study aimed to explore GPs' views on their need for CME, experiences regarding its provision and perceptions on the effect of CME in changing their clinical behaviour.

Methods: Qualitative study using semi-structured interviews of twenty four GPs from Auckland and North Island rural areas assessing GPs' experiences and preferences.
Results: The need for CME was emphasised.

Many peer-reviewed studies show that handwashing (HW) significantly reduces hospital infections and mortality. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of HW by health care workers (HCW) before contact with patients in 3 Argentinean hospitals.

Twenty-six vehicles exhibiting visible smoke emissions were recruited: 14 pre-1991 vehicles and 12 1991 and later model year vehicles. Smoke opacity and regulated pollutant emissions via chassis dynamometer were measured, with testing conducted at 1609 m above sea level.

The fetal origins of adult disease hypothesis proposes that alterations in fetal nutrition and endocrine status result in developmental adaptations that permanently change structure, physiology, and metabolism, thereby predisposing individuals to cardiovascular, metabolic, and endocrine disease in adult life. Multiparous ewes were fed to 50% (nutrient restricted) or 100% (control fed) of total digestible nutrients from Days 28 to 78 of gestation.

To date, no study has assessed the degree of similarity between left ventricular (LV) reverse remodeling and atrophic remodeling. Stable LV hypertrophy was induced by creation of an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) in Lewis rats (32 days). LV unloading was induced by heterotopic transplantation of normal (NL-HT) and/or hypertrophic (AVF-HT) hearts (7 days).

Background: Although many catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) are preventable, measures to reduce these infections are not uniformly implemented.
Objective: To update an existing evidenced-based guideline that promotes strategies to prevent CRBSIs.
Data Sources: The MEDLINE database, conference proceedings, and bibliographies of review articles and book chapters were searched for relevant articles.

These guidelines have been developed for practitioners who insert catheters and for persons responsible for surveillance and control of infections in hospital, outpatient, and home health-care settings. This report was prepared by a working group comprising members from professional organizations representing the disciplines of critical care medicine, infectious diseases, health-care infection control, surgery, anesthesiology, interventional radiology, pulmonary medicine, pediatric medicine, and nursing. The working group was led by the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), in collaboration with the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA), Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), Surgical Infection Society (SIS), American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), American Thoracic Society (ATS), American Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists (ASCCA), Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), Infusion Nurses Society (INS), Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (SCVIR), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is intended to replace the Guideline for Prevention of Intravascular Device-Related Infections published in 1996.

Petri dishes were used to culture 5 mm square explants of rat bladder in minimal volumes of supplemented culture medium. Parental and resistant MGH-U1 urothelial cancer cells were transfected with a green fluorescent protein (GFP) vector.

A model of a heavy-duty vehicle driveline with automatic transmission has been developed for estimating engine speed and load from vehicle speed. The model has been validated using emissions tests conducted on three diesel vehicles on a chassis dynamometer and then on the engines removed from the vehicles tested on an engine dynamometer. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions were proportional to work done by the engine.

To further facilitate progress toward control of schistosomiasis, a system for axenic in vitro culture of the parasite has now been developed. When culture media were preconditioned by Bge cells, sporocysts lived longer in vitro and produced more offspring.

We examined the temporal relationship between messages (type I and type III mRNAs) for the principal fibrillar procollagens and subsequent collagen accretion, cross-linking, and decorin expression in the left ventricle (LV) postmyocardial infarction (post-MI). We sought to determine 1) what role the proteoglycan decorin plays in extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling known to take place as a consequence of MI and 2) the extent skeletal muscle ECM is altered early post-MI. Therefore, after surgically induced production of small- to moderate-sized infarcts (approximately 20% of LV mass), extent and time course of ECM remodeling was evaluated in remaining viable LV free wall and in slow- [soleus (SOL)] and fast-twitch [gastrocnemius (GAST)] skeletal muscles.
