Purpose: The majority of residents pursue fellowship following training in general surgery, especially at academic medical centers. However, there is no singular body that oversees fellowship, and many aspects of fellowship remain speculative, including application and admissions. Our aim was to define the known statistics around surgical fellowships.

Methods: 48 recently-exposed household contacts of symptomatic COVID-19 cases were recruited in London, UK between May 2020 and March 2021 through a prospective, longitudinal observational study.
Background: The etiology of schizophrenia involves both biological and environmental risk factors. Studying childhood trauma in disorders along the schizophrenia spectrum, including schizotypal personality disorder (SPD), can inform early risk and protective factors for psychosis. However, no study has directly compared childhood trauma between SPD and schizophrenia.

We sought to examine the performance of the SITI score to predict likelihood of acute neurosurgical intervention for children with TBI.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, retrospective, observational study of children diagnosed with TBI as determined by International Classification of Diseases codes, presenting to a single level 1 pediatric trauma center, between June 1, 2003, and May 31, 2018.
Volumetric muscle loss (VML) injuries are the result of extreme trauma from battlefield injuries, tumor ablations, and other physical traumas such as car crash injuries. The abrupt loss of muscle restricts the tissue's remaining regenerative capacity, leading to loss of satellite cells, peripheral nerve connections, and aberrant fibrosis. Prior research from our lab demonstrated that decellularized muscle matrix (DMM) supported regeneration of de novo fibers within the graft.

However, there is a lack of literature regarding the cumulative impact of multiple risk factors. To address this gap, we utilized the PearlDiver database, an insurance billing claims database containing de-identified data from 91 million orthopedic patients.

Traditional non-invasive endocrine monitoring from urine and faeces typically captures only a short window in time, poorly reflecting long-term hormone fluctuations. We examined toenail trimmings collected from African () and Asian () elephants during routine foot care, to determine if long-term hormone patterns are preserved in these slow-growing keratinized tissues.

Rituximab, a type I anti-CD20 B cell depleting monoclonal antibody, is the current standard of care for induction of disease remission. Rituximab is not always effective and is associated with a high subsequent relapse risk.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA common goal in evolutionary biology is to discern the mechanisms that produce the astounding diversity of morphologies seen across the tree of life. Aposematic species, those with a conspicuous phenotype coupled with some form of defence, are excellent models to understand the link between vivid colour pattern variations, the natural selection shaping it, and the underlying genetic mechanisms underpinning this variation. Mimicry systems in which species share a conspicuous phenotype can provide an even better model for understanding the mechanisms of colour production in aposematic species, especially if comimics have divergent evolutionary histories.

Once the nerve is damaged, paralyzed skeletal muscle will atrophy and accumulate noncontractile connective tissue. The objective of this study was to determine differences in connective tissue, atrophy, and inflammatory signaling between two paralysis models, botulinum toxin (Botox), which blocks acetylcholine transmission while keeping nerves intact, and neurectomy, which eliminates all nerve-to-muscle signaling.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFImmobilization-induced skeletal unloading results in muscle atrophy and rapid bone loss, thereby increasing the risk of falling and the need for implant therapy in patients with extended bed rest or neuromuscular injuries. Skeletal unloading causes bone loss by altering bone growth and resorption, suggesting that implant performance might be affected. To test this, we focused on early events in implant osseointegration.

Background: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is the prototypical disorder of emotion dysregulation. We have previously shown that patients with BPD are impaired in their capacity to engage cognitive reappraisal, a frequently employed adaptive emotion regulation strategy.
Methods: Here, we report on the efficacy of longitudinal training in cognitive reappraisal to enhance emotion regulation in patients with BPD.
Cognitive deficits are a core impairment across the range of schizophrenia (SZ) spectrum disorders, including schizotypal personality disorder (SPD). The MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) was developed to be a robust, specific, and valid cognitive assessment battery to assess cognition in clinical trials for treating cognitive impairments in SZ. Despite the similarity of cognitive impairments shown in SPD and SZ and the clear relevance of uniform assessment across a diagnostic spectrum, the MCCB has yet to be validated in SPD.

Bulls from the Pacific Northwest region of the United States and other northern areas are exposed to extreme cold temperatures during winter. However, the effects of cold exposure on the methylation patterns of bovine sperm remain unclear.

The purpose of this systematic review is to describe the available research on the cardiovascular health in former NFL players.
Methods: Relevant studies were included from the PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases.
Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) stochastically accrue in skeletal muscle and on collagen over an individual's lifespan, stiffening the muscle and modifying the stem cell (MuSC) microenvironment while promoting proinflammatory, antiregenerative signaling via the receptor for advanced glycation end-products (RAGEs). In the present study, a novel in vitro model was developed of this phenomenon by cross linking a 3-D collagen scaffold with AGEs and investigating how myoblasts responded to such an environment. Briefly, collagen scaffolds were incubated with d-ribose (0, 25, 40, 100, or 250 mM) for 5 days at 37°C.

The relationship between gastrointestinal tract infection, the host immune response, and the clinical outcome of disease is not well understood in COVID-19. We sought to understand the effect of intestinal immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 on patient outcomes including the magnitude of systemic antibody induction. Combining two prospective cohort studies, International Severe Acute Respiratory and emerging Infections Consortium Comprehensive Clinical Characterisations Collaboration (ISARIC4C) and Integrated Network for Surveillance, Trials and Investigations into COVID-19 Transmission (INSTINCT), we acquired samples from 88 COVID-19 cases representing the full spectrum of disease severity and analysed viral RNA and host gut cytokine responses in the context of clinical and virological outcome measures.

In 2020, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state health and regulatory partners investigated an outbreak of Newport infections linked to melons from southwest Indiana, resulting in 80 ill persons and 18 hospitalizations reported across 15 states. Epidemiologic and traceback data indicated melons as the vehicle for these infections, but the collinearity of melon varieties purchased and consumed together in combination with the traceback investigation that could not rule out either melon type, did not allow investigators to delineate whether the vehicle was cantaloupe alone or, both cantaloupe and watermelons.
