How is bioelectrical impedance used in neonatal intensive care? A scoping review.

Unlabelled: Poor growth and nutrition management in the neonatal period can have a negative impact upon both the short- and long-term outcomes for the infant. Improvements in bioelectrical impedance technology and accompanying licencing agreements now make this enhanced device available for use in infants as small as 23 weeks gestational age. An exploration of this technology and its use is now timely.

Access to Health Care Improves COVID-19 Vaccination and Mitigates Health Disparities Among Medicare Beneficiaries.

Background: COVID-19 disproportionately impacts the elderly, particularly racial/ethnic minorities and those with low socioeconomic status (SES). These latter groups may also have higher vaccine hesitancy. We aim to evaluate if access to care improves COVID-19 vaccination rates and improves health disparities.

Scoping Review of Postpartum Discharge Education Provided by Nurses.

Objective: To determine what is known about postpartum education provided by nurses to women before discharge from the hospital after birth and whether current nursing practices are effective to prepare women to identify warning signs of complications, perform self-care (physical and emotional), prepare for parenting a newborn, and establish infant feeding.

Data Sources: We conducted a systematic search of CINAHL Plus and MEDLINE for relevant sources, including peer-reviewed articles, conference presentations, and guidelines from professional organizations, that were published in English from January 2010 through November 30, 2020.

Study Selection: We included sources if participants were women who had given birth to a healthy, liveborn, term infant and were receiving education in whole or in part by a nurse during the maternity hospitalization.

Metformin is associated with lower hospitalizations, mortality and severe coronavirus infection among elderly medicare minority patients in 8 states in USA.

Background And Aims: Metformin has antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects and several cohort studies have shown that metformin lower mortality in the COVID population in a majority white population. There is no data documenting the effect of metformin taken as an outpatient on COVID-19 related hospitalizations. Our aim was to evaluate if metformin decreases hospitalization and severe COVID-19 among minority Medicare patients who acquired the SARS-CoV2 virus.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionally impacted the elderly. In the United States and Europe the mortality rate of elderly patients with COVID-19 is greater than 30%. Our aim is to determine predictors of COVID-19 related hospitalization and severity of disease among elderly Medicare patients in the United States.

Objective: To hear the voices of women, their partners, and nurses about expectations and priorities during the postpartum hospitalization.

Design: Focus groups using semistructured interview questions.

Setting: A 12-bed labor-delivery-recovery-postpartum unit at a small urban hospital in the U.

Technology-assisted nursing for postpartum support: A randomized controlled trial.

Aim: To determine if an electronic nursing intervention during the first 6 months postpartum was effective in improving mood and decreasing stress.

Background: Unmet needs postpartum can have a negative impact on mood and parenting stress. Technology-assisted nursing care may provide needed support and reduce risk.

Measuring outcomes of digital technology-assisted nursing postpartum: A randomized controlled trial.

Aim: To determine if delivering electronic messages from nurses during the first 6 months postpartum is feasible, acceptable and effective in improving mood and decreasing parenting stress.

Background: Competing demands during the postpartum hospitalization make focused time for nurses to provide education and support difficult. Unmet needs following discharge may increase the incidence of postpartum depression.

Celiac Disease and Gluten Sensitivity.

Celiac disease is an immune-mediated enteropathy triggered by gluten that affects genetically predisposed individuals, typically causing intestinal symptoms and malabsorption. Diagnosis requires stepwise evaluation with anti-tissue transglutaminase IgA and histologic analysis of the small bowel. Strict adherence to a gluten-free diet is the primary treatment.

Intestinal volvulus following laparoscopic surgery: a literature review and case report.

Since its introduction in the early 1990s, the laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become the standard surgical intervention for cholelithiasis. The laparoscopic technique is being used in an increasing number of abdominal procedures. Intestinal volvulus is a rare complication of laparoscopic procedures, such as the laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Intraoperative retrograde mesenteric angioplasty for acute occlusive mesenteric ischaemia: a case series.

Acute mesenteric ischaemia secondary to atherosclerotic disease of the superior mesenteric artery is a surgical emergency associated with a poor prognosis, and requires prompt diagnosis and early revascularisation in order to improve outcome. The traditional management of surgical resection of necrotic bowel plus mesenteric revascularisation by surgical bypass is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. We describe the use of a combined surgical and endovascular approach, using intraoperative retrograde superior mesenteric angioplasty at the time of laparotomy.

Cerumen impaction.

Cerumen is a naturally occurring, normally extruded product of the external auditory canal. It is usually asymptomatic, but when it becomes impacted it can cause complications such as hearing loss, pain, or dizziness. It also can interfere with examination of the tympanic membrane.

Childhood asthma: treatment update.

The prevalence of childhood asthma has risen significantly over the past four decades. A family history of atopic disease is associated with an increased likelihood of developing asthma, and environmental triggers such as tobacco smoke significantly increase the severity of daily asthma symptoms and the frequency of acute exacerbations. The goal of asthma therapy is to control symptoms, optimize lung function, and minimize days lost from school.

D-ribose aids congestive heart failure patients.

Patients with congestive heart failure often experience fatigue despite intensive pharmacological therapy. Ribose can aid the recovery of ATP levels and, hence, diastolic function. Clinical trials have shown that ribose supplementation improves ischemic threshold and enhances diastolic function in congestive heart failure.

Prevalence of primary open angle glaucoma in general ophthalmic practice in the United Kingdom.

Aim: To estimate the predicted prevalence of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) from the activity of a local ophthalmology department.

Method: Using clinic audit data, the local incidence and prevalence of POAG in the registered population of two primary care trusts were calculated.

Results: The local derived prevalence estimate for POAG was 978 per 100 000 people aged 40-89 years (95% CI 753 to 1272) compared with the expected prevalence from a published model of 1230 people per 100 000 people aged 40-89 years.
