Clinical significance of PNO1 as a novel biomarker and therapeutic target of hepatocellular carcinoma.

The RNA-binding protein PNO1 plays an essential role in ribosome biogenesis. Recent studies have shown that it is involved in tumorigenesis; however, its role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to examine whether PNO1 can be used as a biomarker of HCC and also examine the therapeutic potential of PNO1 knockout for the treatment of HCC.

Surveillance for pneumonic plague in the United States during an international emergency: a model for control of imported emerging diseases.

In September 1994, in response to a reported epidemic of plague in India, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) enhanced surveillance in the United States for imported pneumonic plague. Plague information materials were rapidly developed and distributed to U.S.

Malaria in east African refugees resettling to the United States: development of strategies to reduce the risk of imported malaria.

Resettlement to the United States of malaria-infected refugees can pose problems for both the refugees and their resettlement communities. To formulate malaria management strategies for East African refugees before resettlement to the United States, epidemiologic data were reviewed and malaria prevalence surveys were conducted among refugees awaiting resettlement in Mombasa, Kenya, and Khartoum, Sudan, in 1993. Overall, 279 Somali (Mombasa) and 127 Ethiopian (Khartoum) refugees were surveyed.

Rational approach to postoperative transfusion in high-risk patients.

An appropriate threshold for transfusion in patients with coronary artery disease has not been defined. Our purpose was to determine: (1) the effects of preoperative volume loading; (2) postoperative function and oxygen delivery (DO2); (3) an appropriate transfusion threshold based on observed DO2 in high-risk patients undergoing abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair, bypass of aortoiliac disease (AOD), distal bypass, or carotid endarterectomy (CEA). Preoperative volume loading increased cardiac output (CO) in all groups by 15% to 22%.

Decline in the diagnosis of schizophrenia among first contacts with psychiatric services in north-east Scotland, 1969-1984.

Annual age-standardised rates for first contacts with psychiatric services in the Aberdeen area from 1969 to 1984 were calculated for schizophrenia, paranoid states, reactive psychoses, all affective psychoses, mania, and depressive neuroses. Highly significant declines occurred in the diagnosis of schizophrenia and of depressive neuroses. No concomitant increase occurred.

Anorexia nervosa: a psychiatric case register study from Aberdeen.

The results of an examination of the 238 cases of anorexia nervosa on the Aberdeen Psychiatric Case Register for the period 1965-82 are reported. A highly significant increase in the number of cases over time was found. The average annual incidence rate for the period 1978-82 was 4.

Sexual behaviour and contraceptive practice of unmarried female undergraduates at Aberdeen University.

After the sixth week of the spring term of 1971 the unmarried female undergraduates at Aberdeen University were sent a postal questionnaire about their sexual behaviour and contraceptive practice and 1,552 (90%) replied. Of these, 684 (44%) had experienced intercourse, 486 in the six-week period preceding the study, of whom 46% had had it more than six times in this period. It was found that 86% of the relationships were with fiancés or steady partners.
