This study was designed to assess potential differences between sexually functional and dysfunctional women in dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE) responses to erotic stimuli. Blood levels of homovanillic acid (HVA; the major metabolite of DA) and NE were taken during the showing of a nonsexual and a sexual film from 9 women with female sexual arousal disorder and hypoactive sexual desire disorder and from 13 sexually functional women. In many organisms, programmed cell death of germ cells is required for normal development. This often occurs through highly conserved events including the transfer of vital cellular material to the growing gametes following death of neighboring cells. Germline cell death also plays a role in such diverse processes as removal of abnormal or superfluous cells at certain checkpoints, establishment of caste differentiation, and individualization of gametes.

Previous literature presents discordant results on the relationship between physiological and subjective sexual arousal in women. In this study, the use of hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) revealed a significant concordance between continuous measures of physiological and subjective sexual arousal as assessed during exposure to erotic stimuli in a laboratory setting. We propose that past studies that have found little or no association between the two measures may have been in part limited by the methodology and statistical analyses employed.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) initiate an innate immune response. TLR3 on dendritic cells recognize double-stranded (ds) RNA and then signal increases in cytokines and recognition molecules important for immune cell interactions. In this report, we demonstrate TLR3 mRNA and protein are expressed on Fisher rat thyroid cell line-5 (FRTL-5) thyroid cells and are functional because incubating cells with polyinosine-polycytidylic acid causes 1) transcriptional activation of both the nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB)/Elk1 and interferon (IFN) regulatory factor-3/IFN-beta signal paths, 2) posttranscriptional activation of NF-kappaB and ERK1/2, and 3) increased IFN-beta mRNA.

Few studies measuring thermodynamic metal ion selectivity of metalloproteins have been performed, and the major determinants of metal ion selectivity in proteins are not yet well understood. Several features of metal ion binding sites and metal coordination have been hypothesized to alter the transition metal selectivity of chelators, including (1) the polarizability of the coordinating atom, (2) the relative sizes of the binding site and the metal ion, and (3) the metal ion binding site geometry. To test these hypotheses, we have measured the metal ion affinity and selectivity of a prototypical zinc enzyme, human carbonic anhydrase II (CAII), and a number of active site variants where one of the coordinating ligands is substituted by another side chain capable of coordinating metal.

Germline cell death in Drosophila oogenesis is controlled by distinct signals. The death of nurse cells in late oogenesis is developmentally regulated, whereas the death of egg chambers during mid-oogenesis is induced by environmental stress or developmental abnormalities. P-element insertions in the caspase gene dcp-1 disrupt both dcp-1 and the outlying gene, pita, leading to lethality and defective nurse cell death in late oogenesis.

In Drosophila oogenesis, the programmed cell death of germline cells occurs predominantly at three distinct stages. These cell deaths are subject to distinct regulatory controls, as cell death during early and midoogenesis is stress-induced, whereas the cell death of nurse cells in late oogenesis is developmentally regulated. In this report, we show that the effector caspase Drice is activated during cell death in both mid- and late oogenesis, but that the level and localization of activity differ depending on the stage.

Background: Smoking is associated with a decrease in body weight in patients without diabetes mellitus and an increase in insulin resistance and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Whether smoking is associated with an increase in HbA1c and/or a decrease in body mass index (BMI) in type 2 diabetes mellitus is unresolved, however.
