It is widely appreciated that the spectrum of traumatic brain injury (TBI), mild through severe, contains distinct clinical presentations, variably referred to as subtypes, phenotypes, and/or clinical profiles. As part of the Brain Trauma Blueprint TBI State of the Science, we review the current literature on TBI phenotyping with an emphasis on unsupervised methodological approaches, and describe five phenotypes that appear similar across reports. We know surprisingly little about the long-term outcomes for nanomaterials interacting with organisms. To date, most of what we know is derived from studies that limit the range of materials studied and the scope of advanced molecular biology tools applied. The development of biomaterial surfaces possessing the topographical cues that can promote mesenchymal stem cell recruitment and, in particular, those capable of subsequently directing osteogenic differentiation is of increasing importance for the advancement of tissue engineering. While it is accepted that it is the interaction with specific nanoscale topography that induces mesenchymal stem cell differentiation, the potential for an attendant bioactive chemistry working in tandem with such nanoscale features to enhance this effect has not been considered to any great extent. The differentiation of stem cells into multi-lineages is essential to aid the development of tissue engineered materials that replicate the functionality of their tissue of origin. For this study, Raman spectroscopy was used to monitor the formation of a bone-like apatite mineral during the differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) towards an osteogenic lineage. Raman spectroscopy observed dramatic changes in the region dominated by the stretching of phosphate groups (950-970 cm(-1)) during the period of 7-28 days.

Exposure to cocaine causes many neuroadaptations including alterations in several neurotransmitter receptors and transporters. This study investigated potential mechanisms of cocaine-induced receptor and transporter regulation by measuring levels of two proteins involved in receptor and transporter trafficking, dynamin 2 and G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2 (GRK2). The activity of selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) is not fully explained by an estrogen receptor (ER) switch model that simply turns estrogen activity on or off. A better understanding of the mechanisms involved in estrogen signaling and the development of drug resistance could help stratify patients into more coherent treatment groups and identify novel therapeutic candidates. This review describes how interactions between two novel factors known to influence estrogenic activity: nuclear receptor cofactors--protein partners which modulate estrogen action, and microRNAs--a class of recently discovered regulatory elements, may impact hormone-sensitive breast cancer.

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a recognized cause of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients and is reported to account for 250,000 deaths annually. Recent shifts in prophylaxis administration are occurring among surgical specialty groups after observing a lower rate of VTE among patients undergoing elective operation.
