Chronic treatment of gerbils with 1-aminocyclopropanecarboxylic acid (a high affinity, partial agonist at strychnine-insensitive glycine receptors) resulted in a 3-fold increase in survival, a significant improvement in neurological status, and an extensive protection of vulnerable brain regions following severe forebrain ischaemia. A bolus of 1-aminocyclopropanecarboxylic acid 30 min prior to ischaemia did not further improve outcome compared to gerbils receiving their last injection 24 h prior to ischaemia. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that chronic treatment with a glycine partial agonist desensitizes the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor complex.

We prospectively studied 100 patients hospitalized in one general medicine ward and in the medical intensive care unit to study determinants of acquisition of ampicillin-resistant enterococcus.
Methods: Rectal swabs and urine cultures were obtained from patients within 72 hours of admission to the study ward and twice weekly until discharge from the ward or the intensive care unit.
A cDNA for the human "peripheral-type" benzodiazepine receptor (PBR) was isolated from a liver cDNA library. The 851-nucleotide probe hybridized with a approximately 1 kb mRNA in Northern blots of RNA extracted from various human tissues and cell lines. Order parameters S in the upper portion of the chain (positions 5 and 7) and correlation times tau C in the lower portion (positions 12 and 16) determined from the ESR spectra indicate that in general alpha-tocopherol restricts acyl chain motion within the membrane. The magnitude of the increases in order appears to be dependent upon phospholipid molecular area, being the greatest (up to 15%) in saturated dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (14:0-14:0 PC) which possesses a relatively small area per molecule as opposed to much smaller increases (less than 3%) in unsaturated PC membranes of larger molecular area.

Cefepime is a new cephalosporin with a broad antimicrobial spectrum that includes Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. To study the efficacy and safety of cefepime for treatment of pneumonia, 65 patients were randomized to therapy with either cefepime or ceftazidime at a two to one ratio. Amphotericin B produced quick resolution of fungemia and systemic toxicity, but in the midst of treatment, after 647 mg of amphotericin B, he developed sternoclavicular osteomyelitis and arthritis due to Candida albicans.
