Public health nurses (PHNs) and school nurses are integral in addressing health disparities, managing chronic illnesses, preventing and controlling communicable diseases, and promoting wellness within communities. Schools serve as pivotal platforms for implementing health initiatives and providing opportunities for disease prevention and health promotion. School nurses identify and address health risks, including chronic conditions, communicable diseases, substance abuse, and mental health concerns, and often act as knowledgeable authorities to access community resources.

Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic may have interfered with individuals' access to alcohol use disorder (AUD) treatment, but limited research has documented the impact of treatment interference on drinking behavior. This study's purpose was to examine the associations of AUD treatment interference with problematic alcohol use, and the moderating roles of perceived stress and resilience.

Method: A cross-sectional survey design was employed.

Background: Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle most often caused by viral infections. Sex differences in the immune response during myocarditis have been well described but upstream mechanisms in the heart that might influence sex differences in disease are not completely understood.

Methods: Male and female BALB/c wild type mice received an intraperitoneal injection of heart-passaged coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) or vehicle control.

Objectives: Patients with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) experience a wide array of symptoms and system disorders. This study aimed to identify whether differences occurred in 115 self-reported symptoms and comorbidities in patients diagnosed with hEDS or HSD.

Methods: In this study we analysed self-reported data from an EDS Clinic intake questionnaire in patients diagnosed with hEDS, HSD or no hypermobile conditions.

Our hypothetical case study depicts the experience of a newly arrived refugee child, a 10-year-old refugee from war-torn Kyiv, Ukraine. She presented with symptoms of anxiety-related physical complaints following displacement and relocation to the United States. This case study illustrates the care provided by a pediatric nurse practitioner.

Importance: The optimal inhaled reliever therapy for asthma remains unclear.

Objective: To compare short-acting β agonists (SABA) alone with SABA combined with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) and with the fast-onset, long-acting β agonist formoterol combined with ICS for asthma.

Data Sources: The MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL databases were searched from January 1, 2020, to September 27, 2024, without language restrictions.

Article Synopsis
  • Microplastics have been detected in the gastrointestinal fluid of bottlenose dolphins in Sarasota Bay, indicating they might ingest these particles through contaminated fish.
  • A study analyzed muscle and GI tissues from 11 fish species that dolphins eat, finding microplastics in 82% of muscle samples and 97% of GI samples, with varying particle shapes and amounts based on the species and diet type.
  • Pinfish exhibited the highest concentration of microplastics, raising concerns about the impact on dolphins, wildlife health, and seafood safety due to widespread plastic contamination in estuarine environments.

Autoimmune diseases are a leading cause of disability worldwide. Most autoimmune diseases occur more often in women than men, with rheumatic autoimmune diseases being among those most highly expressed in women. Several key factors, identified mainly in animal models and cell culture experiments, are important in increasing autoimmune disease in females.

Child health screenings are a critical, but often overlooked, aspect of children's medical care. School-community partnerships to conduct screenings and ensure that diagnostic follow-up and treatment occur can help achieve optimal child health outcomes. Such partnerships also serve to mitigate the impact of social determinants of health on children's well-being, address health disparities, and promote health equity.

Mutations in human (ciliogenesis associated kinase 1) are linked to ciliopathies and epilepsy. Homozygous point and nonsense mutations that extinguish kinase activity impair primary cilia function, whereas mutations outside the kinase domain are not well understood. Here, we produced a knock-in mouse equivalent to the human A615T variant identified in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME).

Federal law requires school health leaders to ensure meaningful access to language resources to promote optimal health and education outcomes. This paper aims to inform all stakeholders, including decision-makers, about the importance of developing language access plans and policies. Multiple sources and legal guidelines provide a comprehensive overview of the issue.

Background: Mental health conditions affect one in seven young people and research suggests that current mental health services are not meeting the needs of most children and youth. Learning health systems are an approach to enhancing services through rapid, routinized cycles of continuous learning and improvement. Patient-reported outcome measures provide a key data source for learning health systems.

With the increasing amount of renewable energy produced, many governments and industries are pushing for the installation of battery energy storage system (BESS) solutions. Thermal batteries are systems that store heat made from various energy sources, and can be used to produce electricity upon demand. These systems are easily scalable and can be installed in cities, homes and remote locations.

Article Synopsis
  • - Recent studies suggest that viral infections, such as coxsackievirus B3 and SARS-CoV-2, may trigger autoimmune diseases by targeting mitochondria and activating the innate immune response through mitochondrial vesicles.
  • - Infections can lead to autoreactivity in the heart, primarily due to its high mitochondrial density, causing immune responses against proteins like cardiac myosin, even when the heart isn't the main infection site.
  • - The review aims to summarize the current understanding of how viral infections contribute to myocarditis by promoting the release of mitochondrial-containing extracellular vesicles and the role of genetic tolerance defects in increasing autoimmunity risk.

Early-life social experiences shape adult phenotype, yet the underlying behavioral mechanisms remain poorly understood. We manipulated early-life social experience in the highly social African cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni to investigate the effects on behavior and stress axis function in juveniles. Juveniles experienced different numbers of social partners in stable pairs (1 partner), stable groups (6 fish; 5 partners), and socialized pairs (a novel fish was exchanged every 5 days; 5 partners).

The efficacy of STING (stimulator of interferon genes) agonists is due to various factors, primarily inefficient intracellular delivery, low/lack of endogenous STING expression in many tumours, and a complex balance between tumour control and progression. Here we report a universal STING mimic (uniSTING) based on a polymeric architecture. UniSTING activates STING signalling in a range of mouse and human cell types, independent of endogenous STING expression, and selectively stimulates tumour control IRF3/IFN-I pathways, but not tumour progression NF-κB pathways.

School connectedness is the degree to which students experience acceptance, inclusion, and care by school personnel and peers. A sense of belonging incorporates an emotional connection to the community. School connectedness and belonging are protective factors that promote student engagement, accomplishment, and community performance.

Objective: To identify latent classes of positive coping behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic and examine associations with alcohol-related and mental health outcomes across participants with and without a history of alcohol use disorder (AUD).

Methods: Baseline data from 463 participants who were enrolled in the NIAAA COVID-19 Pandemic Impact on Alcohol (C19-PIA) Study were analyzed. Latent class analysis (LCA) was applied to five positive coping behaviors during COVID-19: taking media breaks, taking care of their body, engaging in healthy behaviors, making time to relax, and connecting with others.

We report here the results of an experimental investigation of the electronic properties and photocurrent responses of the CaFeO and LaOFeO phases and a computational study of the electronic structure of polar CaFeOSe. We find that both CaFeO ( = S and Se) have band gaps and conduction band edge positions compatible with light-driven photocatalytic water splitting, although the oxysulfide suffers from degradation due to the oxidation of Fe sites. The higher O/ ratio in the Fe coordination environment in CaFeOSe increases its stability without increasing the band gap beyond the visible range.
