Comparing the impact of online and in-person active learning in preclinical medical education.

Background: Case-based active learning groups (ALGs) are an approach to learning medicine through the exploration of patient cases in a collaborative small group setting. Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, this institution had to convert the preclinical curriculum to a virtual format. Currently, few studies have explored the effects of this change on relationships and skills in case-based learning, and our study aimed to explore the impact of the virtual curriculum on future physicians' interpersonal development and learning preferences.

Cell-Free DNA Results Indicating Mosaic Monosomy X of Likely Maternal Origin: Impact on Genetic Counseling Practices and Patient Experiences.

Objective: To investigate the current genetic counseling practices involving a cfDNA result indicating mosaic monosomy X of likely maternal origin, and to better understand the perspectives of patients who have received this result.

Method: A total of 60 prenatal genetic counselors completed surveys about their experiences with this result, cfDNA consenting practices, and management practices. In addition, qualitative interviews were conducted with 5 patients to gain insight into their experiences with result disclosure and follow-up care.

Anakinra for dengue patients with hyperinflammation: protocol for a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial.

Background: Novel host-directed therapies are urgently needed for patients with dengue, particularly those at high risk of developing severe disease. Broad immunosuppression using corticosteroids in unselected patients with dengue has so far been unsuccessful. Patients with hyperinflammation (raised CRP and/or ferritin levels) are at highest risk of poor outcomes in dengue.

Background: Long term studies have shown the Latarjet procedure to be successful in preventing re-dislocation in primary and recurrent anterior inferior shoulder instability. It provides stability through the sling effect of the conjoint tendon and the bone block. It is unclear whether augmentation with capsular repair provides an added benefit or leads to restricted range of external rotation.

Background: Epilepsy is one of the commonest neurological conditions worldwide and confers a significant mortality risk, partly driven by status epilepticus (SE). Terminating SE is the goal of pharmaceutical rescue therapies. This survey evaluates UK-based healthcare professionals' clinical practice and experience in community-based rescue therapy prescribing.

Real-world impact of luspatercept on red blood cell transfusions among patients with myelodysplastic syndromes: A United States healthcare claims database study.

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are associated with anemia and the need for blood transfusions. In clinical trials, luspatercept reduced transfusion dependency among patients with lower-risk MDS. This United States (US) study describes real-world clinical outcomes pre- and post-luspatercept initiation among patients with MDS.

Preparing the next generation of nurse leaders in education, science, and practice: Lessons from four Robert Wood Johnson Foundation programs.

Background: Recent articles have described the challenges in developing nurse leaders to advance nursing science, improve health, healthcare, and health equity, and build the next generation of nurses. Over the past 25 years, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has implemented many programs to develop nurse leaders to address these challenges.

Purpose: This article shares lessons learned from four RWJF programs and how the authors recommend those lessons can be applied today.

UK guidelines for the investigation and management of eosinophilia in returning travellers and migrants.

Eosinophilia is a common finding in returning travellers, migrants and other travelling groups. In this setting, it often indicates an underlying helminth infection. Infections associated with eosinophilia are frequently either asymptomatic or associated with non-specific symptoms but some can cause severe disease.

How emergency departments are responding to the opioid crisis: Results from a statewide survey in Kentucky.

Objective: There is a rising effort for hospital emergency departments (EDs) to offer and expand substance use disorder (SUD) services. This state-wide evaluation studies SUD services offered along the continuum of implementation across Kentucky's EDs to inform future state efforts to build ED bridge programs.

Methods: We conducted a mixed-methods study using an online survey of all Kentucky Emergency Department Directors between January and May of 2023.

Background: Anecdotal evidence suggests paradoxical caffeine overuse in individuals with Huntington's disease (HD). A small retrospective study associated caffeine intake over 190 grams daily to earlier onset of HD symptoms. However, specific data on consumption habits is limited.

Glycocalyx disruption and hyperinflammatory responses are implicated in the pathogenesis of dengue-associated vascular leak, however little is known about their association with clinical outcomes of patients with dengue shock syndrome (DSS). We investigated the association of vascular and inflammatory biomarkers with clinical outcomes and their correlations with clinical markers of vascular leakage. We performed a prospective cohort study in Viet Nam.

Psychosocial interventions for improving the physical health of young people and adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a scoping review.

Background: Young people and adults with ADHD are at risk of a range of physical health problems. There is limited guidance on how to approach health problems in ADHD, and especially around 16-25 year olds who will be transitioning from paediatric to adult care. The aim of this scoping review was to identify psychosocial interventions that target physical health in young people and adults with ADHD.

Objectives: This study aimed to explore the perspectives of people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), their supporters and primary care professionals (PCPs), on the wider physical and mental health needs of people with ADHD and the support currently available.

Regional Heterogeneity in Intestinal Epithelial Barrier Permeability and Mesenteric Perfusion After Thoracic Spinal Cord Injury.

Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) disrupts intestinal barrier function, thereby increasing antigen permeation and leading to poor outcomes. Despite the intestinal tract's anatomic and physiologic heterogeneity, studies following SCI have not comprehensively addressed intestinal pathophysiology with regional specificity.

Aims And Methods: We used an experimental model of high thoracic SCI to investigate (1) regional mucosal oxidative stress using dihydroethidium labeling; (2) regional paracellular permeability to small- and large-molecular probes via Ussing chamber; (3) regional intestinal tight junction (TJ) protein expression; and (4) hindgut perfusion via the caudal mesenteric artery.

Human papillomavirus genomes replicate extrachromosomally in infected tissues and derived keratinocyte cells. The cell line CIN12 9E was established from a cervical CIN1 lesion, contains replicating HPV31 genomes, and is widely used as a model to study the HPV life cycle. Here, we clone and sequence the HPV31 9E genome.

Identifying Targetable Vulnerabilities to Circumvent or Overcome Venetoclax Resistance in Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma.

Clinical trials with single-agent venetoclax/ABT-199 (anti-apoptotic BCL2 inhibitor) revealed that diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is not solely dependent on BCL2 for survival. Gaining insight into pathways/proteins that increase venetoclax sensitivity or unique vulnerabilities in venetoclax-resistant DLBCL would provide new potential treatment avenues. Therefore, we generated acquired venetoclax-resistant DLBCL cells and evaluated these together with intrinsically venetoclax-resistant and -sensitive DLBCL lines.

Despite a surge of attention to gender-based violence (GBV), research about the night-time economy (NTE) as a site of gendered violence is limited. Even less research examines women's emotional responses to "unwanted sexual intrusions" (USI) in the NTE. Analyzing women's emotional responses can generate deeper understanding of social phenomena, power and its operation, and is in keeping with feminist theorizing that uses a victim-survivor-centered approach.

Schizophrenia and Orthoptic Conditions: A Literature Review.

Purpose: A narrative review of the literature reporting ocular abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia was undertaken to determine the types and prevalence of orthoptic conditions in this patient cohort.

Methods: A systematic search of multiple databases yielded 1,974 studies published between January 1992 and January 2022. All were screened for relevance based on their title and abstract.
