Background: Over the past decade, the adoption of screening programs, digital mammography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has increased early-stage breast cancer diagnosis rates. Mortality rates have decreased due to early detection and improved treatments, including personalized therapies. Accelerated partial-breast irradiation (APBI) is emerging as a convenient and effective treatment for some patients, with studies exploring its preoperative use.

Widening the Road to Health Professions Education: Expanding Access for Diverse and Underserved Populations.

The Spring 2023 Webinar Audio Seminar (WAS) of the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE), titled "Widening the Road to Health Professions Education: Expanding Access for Diverse and Underserved Populations," was designed to help health science educators explore innovative practices in recruiting and enrolling students from underserved populations into health sciences programs. From March 2, 2023, to March 30, 2023, this five-part webinar series was broadcast live to institutions and educators worldwide. This series helped participants learn about creating pathways for students to meet the unique needs of their communities.

Professionally led support groups for people living with advanced or metastatic cancer: a systematic scoping review of effectiveness and factors critical to implementation success within real-world healthcare and community settings.

Purpose: To examine the effectiveness of professionally led support groups for people with advanced or metastatic cancer, and identify factors critical to implementation success within real-world settings.

Methods: Databases (MEDLINE; PsychINFO; CINAHL) and grey literature were searched for empirical publications and evaluations. Articles were screened for eligibility and data systematically extracted, charted and summarised using a modified scoping review methodology.

Semi-automated micro-computed tomography lung segmentation and analysis in mouse models.

Computed Tomography (CT) is a standard clinical tool utilized to diagnose known lung pathologies based on established grading methods. However, for preclinical trials and toxicity investigations in animal models, more comprehensive datasets are typically needed to determine discriminative features between experimental treatments, which oftentimes require analysis of multiple images and their associated differential quantification using manual segmentation methods. Furthermore, for manual segmentation of image data, three or more readers is the gold standard of analysis, but this requirement can be time-consuming and inefficient, depending on variability due to reader bias.

Co-axial acoustic-based optical coherence vibrometry probe for the quantification of resonance frequency modes in ocular tissue.

We present a co-axial acoustic-based optical coherence vibrometry probe (CoA-OCV) for vibro-acoustic resonance quantification in biological tissues. Sample vibrations were stimulated via a loudspeaker, and pre-compensation was used to calibrate the acoustic spectrum. Sample vibrations were measured via phase-sensitive swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT).

In vitro reconstitution reveals a key role of human mitochondrial EXOG in RNA primer processing.

The removal of RNA primers is essential for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) replication. Several nucleases have been implicated in RNA primer removal in human mitochondria, however, no conclusive mechanism has been elucidated. Here, we reconstituted minimal in vitro system capable of processing RNA primers into ligatable DNA ends.

Oxidative stress induces Z-DNA-binding protein 1-dependent activation of microglia via mtDNA released from retinal pigment epithelial cells.

Oxidative stress, inflammation, and aberrant activation of microglia in the retina are commonly observed in ocular pathologies. In glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration, the chronic activation of microglia affects retinal ganglion cells and photoreceptors, respectively, contributing to gradual vision loss. However, the molecular mechanisms that cause activation of microglia in the retina are not fully understood.

Accessing depth-resolved high spatial frequency content from the optical coherence tomography signal.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a rapidly evolving technology with a broad range of applications, including biomedical imaging and diagnosis. Conventional intensity-based OCT provides depth-resolved imaging with a typical resolution and sensitivity to structural alterations of about 5-10 microns. It would be desirable for functional biological imaging to detect smaller features in tissues due to the nature of pathological processes.

USMLE Step-1 is Going to Pass/Fail, Now What Do We Do?

The Winter 2021 Webinar Audio Series (WAS) of the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE), titled, "USMLE Step-1 is Going to Pass/Fail, Now what do we do?" was broadcast live to audiences at academic institutions worldwide in five weekly webinars from January 7, 2021, to February 4, 2021. Recognized experts from various stakeholder groups discussed the impact of the decision to score the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 exam Pass/Fail (P/F). The speakers identified challenges to their respective programs and explored creative ways to address potential consequences.

Lever-press duration as a measure of frustration in sucrose and drug reinforcement.

Rationale: Currently there is little research into the role of frustration in substance use disorders despite research showing that frustration tolerance in humans is associated with a lower likelihood of developing substance use problems, better outcomes in recovery, and fewer relapses.

Objective: In order to address this need, our studies use a rat model to focus on frustration-related behavior in natural reward and addiction-related behavioral procedures. Frustration is defined as when a subject is unable to achieve a reinforcer, receives less of a reinforcer than anticipated, or has to work harder to achieve a reinforcer.

Dynamics of androgens in healthy and hospitalized newborn foals.

Background: Information on steroids derived from the adrenal glands, gonads, or fetoplacental unit is minimal in newborn foals.

Objective: To measure androgen concentrations in serum and determine their association with disease severity and outcome in hospitalized foals.

Animals: Hospitalized (n = 145) and healthy (n = 80) foals.

Global spatial risk assessment of sharks under the footprint of fisheries.

Effective ocean management and the conservation of highly migratory species depend on resolving the overlap between animal movements and distributions, and fishing effort. However, this information is lacking at a global scale. Here we show, using a big-data approach that combines satellite-tracked movements of pelagic sharks and global fishing fleets, that 24% of the mean monthly space used by sharks falls under the footprint of pelagic longline fisheries.
