Recent advances in automation have fostered the development of unattended data collection services at a handful of synchrotron facilities worldwide. At the Swiss Light Source, the installation of new high-throughput sample changers at all three macromolecular crystallography beamlines and the commissioning of the Fast Fragment and Compound Screening pipeline created a unique opportunity to automate data acquisition. Here, the DA+ microservice software stack upgrades, implementation of an automatic loop-centering service and deployment of the Smart Digital User (SDU) software for unattended data collection are reported.

Background: Evidence suggests that Aboriginal babies in Western Australia are not receiving adequate primary health care in their first 3 months of life, leading to questions about enablers and constraints to delivering such care. This paper presents findings from a qualitative research project investigating health providers' perceptions and experiences of best and current practice in discharge planning, postnatal care and health education for Aboriginal mothers and their newborn babies.

Methods: Constructivist grounded theory guided this research involving 58 semi-structured interviews conducted with health providers who deliver care to Aboriginal mothers and infants.

This structural and biophysical study exploited a method of perdeuterating hen egg-white lysozyme based on the expression of insoluble protein in followed by in-column chemical refolding. This allowed detailed comparisons with perdeuterated lysozyme produced in the yeast , as well as with unlabelled lysozyme. Both perdeuterated variants exhibit reduced thermal stability and enzymatic activity in comparison with hydrogenated lysozyme.

High concentrations of trihalomethanes (THMs) in public water supplies potentially pose a health hazard, but exposure assessment remains a complex task. To interpret research findings and monitoring data for THMs, it is important to evaluate spatial and temporal variations in both total THM and the individual constituent compounds (including brominated species). We therefore aimed to determine the concentrations, and spatial and temporal variability of concentrations, of THMs public water supplies in Perth, Western Australia, which is known historically to have high brominated THM concentrations.

Prion diseases, a group of incurable, lethal neurodegenerative disorders of mammals including humans, are caused by prions, assemblies of misfolded host prion protein (PrP). A single point mutation (G127V) in human PrP prevents prion disease, however the structural basis for its protective effect remains unknown. Here we show that the mutation alters and constrains the PrP backbone conformation preceding the PrP β-sheet, stabilising PrP dimer interactions by increasing intermolecular hydrogen bonding.

We examined health care utilisation and needs of people with severe COPD in the low-population-density setting of the Southern Region of New Zealand (NZ). We undertook a retrospective case note review of patients with COPD coded as having an emergency department attendance and/or admission with at least one acute exacerbation during 2015 to hospitals in the Southern Region of NZ. Data were collected and analysed from 340 case notes pertaining to: demographics, hospital admissions, outpatient contacts, pulmonary rehabilitation, advance care planning and comorbidities.

In April 2017, 4 California residents from 2 adjacent counties were hospitalized with suspected foodborne botulism, precipitating an investigation by state and local public health departments in California.
