An increased incidence of sudden death has been reported in chronic alcoholism. To assess electrical vulnerability of the heart, action potential responses, and the role of the sympathetic system, a well-nourished canine model has been studied intact under chloralose anesthesia after 1 year of ethanol consumption at 36% of caloric intake. Two alcoholic groups were compared with controls (Group 1).

Similar tau values were recorded from LS and SS mice, and these values were similarly increased by acute ethanol (50 mM). Mice were then chronically treated with ethanol to induce tolerance to its hypnotic action.

Specific articles are described, the purposes and goals of the quantitative series are set forth, and the relationship of this body of knowledge to the scientific status of the area of aging research is discussed.

We concentrate specifically on the use of a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach (using computer programs like LISREL) to deal with issues of: (1) group differences in regression parameters, (2) differences in longitudinal and cross-sectional results, (3) differences due to longitudinal attrition, and (4) mixtures of these problems. To illustrate these ideas we use data from a previous study of hypertension and intellectual abilities (from Schultz, Elias, Robbins, Streeten, and Blakeman, 1986).

An informal counselling service was provided for all patients. Morbidity was measured at 6, 9 and 12 months after surgery with two self-rating scales: the general health questionnaire and the Leeds depression and anxiety scales.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFA new technique for the assessment of adequacy of surgical margins of excision in skin tumor resection biopsies is described. The technique essentially consists of staining the whole fresh or fixed biopsy tissue in eosin followed by Mayer's hematoxylin. Following staining, the epidermal perimeter of the skin ellipse and the deep surgical margin can be assessed using a stereo-microscope.

We describe how these methods may be implemented in the LISREL and COSAN packages and illustrate the method with data on cognitive ability, education, and personality reported by Phillips et al. (Behav.

Characteristics of Child Behavior Profile (CBP) types were studied in a general population sample of 202 boys aged 6 to 11 years. Parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist and teachers simultaneously rated the Teacher's Report Form. Overall, 39.

The authors surveyed 757 University of California, Los Angeles, house officers (485-64% responded) regarding their expectations of laboratory test turnaround time for five test groups that are regularly offered both stat and routine.

No epithelial or other sarcomatous elements were included. Detailed postmortem examination failed to reveal evidence of metastatic tumor or an alternative primary site.

Analytic precision and accuracy goals have been established, and laboratory performance is monitored periodically. For a laboratory test to be useful, it must be available in a timely manner.

Prompted by these observations, we undertook a search for cases of "pure" puerperal psychosis (ie, typical manifestations 3-14 days postpartum) in order to evaluate the clinical background of this phenomenon. Special attention was paid to the medications that the patients had received peripartum.

Preliminary studies suggested that this compound represented a novel class of inhibitors of mitochondrial function. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to determine the mechanism of mitochondrial dysfunction induced by Au(DPPE)+2.

The patient presented with confusion, loss of memory, hallucinations, abnormal behaviour, tachycardia and profuse sweating. Investigations were unrewarding and the patient's clinical state deteriorated until his death 1 month after presentation.

A longitudinal model that includes correlations, variances, and means is described as a latent growth curve model (LGM). When merged with repeated-measures data, this technique permits the estimation of parameters representing both individual and group dynamics.

The effects of cibenzoline on transmembrane action potentials were examined in guinea pig papillary muscle. Cibenzoline (1-128 microM) did not alter the action potential durations at 50 and 90% of repolarization, the effective refractory period or the ratio of effective refractory period to action potential duration at 90% of repolarization. Likewise, the maximum diastolic potential was virtually unaffected.

LC numbers were increased within the lesions of actinic keratosis, Bowen's disease, keratoacanthoma, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. In all lesions except actinic keratosis the LC density was also significantly increased in the adjacent non-neoplastic epithelium.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLangerhans' cell density was assessed quantitatively in cervical wart virus infection (cervical condyloma), cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, and koilocytic dysplasia with use of an antibody to S100 protein and an indirect immunoperoxidase technique. When compared with normal ectocervix, Langerhans' cell density was significantly decreased in cervical wart virus infection and significantly increased in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. In koilocytic dysplasia, intermediate Langerhans' cell densities were obtained.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA new procedure is described for staining Langerhans cells (LCs) based on the ability of anti-S-100 antibody to stain both epidermal LCs and melanocytes, while L-Dopa stains only melanocytes. This procedure can be used on paraffin-embedded skin sections and is therefore advantageous for examination of pathological skin specimens. In order to determine how best to quantitate LCs in skin sections the distribution of LCs has been investigated using an improved method for preparation of epidermal sheets from mouse skin.
