Retrospective observational cohort study of premature neonates screened for ROP with 7 years of follow-up assessing the visual outcomes and adequacy of preschool visual screening.

Background: Very premature infants screened for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) that do not develop ROP still experience serious visual developmental challenges, and while it is recommended that all children in the UK are offered preschool visual screening, we aimed to explore whether this vulnerable group requires dedicated follow-up.

Methods: We performed a real-world retrospective observational cohort study of children previously screened for ROP in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (Scotland) between 2013 and 2015. We excluded those with any severity of ROP identified during screening.

Evaluation of a psychoeducation group for children presenting with functional tic-like behaviours.

We describe the implementation and evaluation of an online psychoeducation group for young people experiencing functional tic-like behaviours (FTLBs) - a type of functional neurological disorder (FND). Across six groups, 50 participants completed pre- and post-group goal-based outcomes (GBOs) and 36 participants completed service-user feedback, which gathered qualitative and quantitative data about participants experiences of the group. Young people and their parents reported significant improvement in their GBOs following the group and increased knowledge and confidence in managing FTLBs.

Applying an Established Exposure Response Prevention Protocol for Young People With Tourette Syndrome in an Intensive, Group Format: A Feasibility Study.

Background: The motor and vocal tics that characterise Tourette syndrome are stigmatizing and impact on quality of life. Behavioural interventions such as Exposure Response Prevention or Comprehensive Behavioural Interventions for Tics are first line treatment for Tourette syndrome, but availability is limited. This study is the first to explore the impact of an established manualised Exposure Response Prevention treatment protocol, developed for individual therapy, but here uniquely delivered intensively, to a group.

The relationship between weight and pulmonary outcomes in overweight and obese people with cystic fibrosis: A retrospective observational study.

Background: A major focus in cystic fibrosis (CF) care aims to increase weight gain. Rates of overweight and obese people with CF have gradually increased over the past decade. Obesity could be a risk for restriction of lung volumes and airway obstruction as well as increase rates of pulmonary exacerbations in people with CF.

Improved understanding of non-epileptic seizures and reduced emergency health care usage following a single psychoeducational group for children and their parents.

Rationale: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a three-hour psychoeducation group in improving understanding of non-epileptic seizures (NES), health outcomes and quality of life in young people with NES.

Background: Multi-session psychoeducational groups for adults with NES have reported improved psychosocial functioning and reduced NES compared to those who do not receive psychoeducational interventions. To date there have been no studies in young people examining the effects of a single session of psychoeducation.

Quality improvement evaluation of postoperative wound dressings in orthopaedic patients.

Dressings play a key role in postoperative wound care, as clinicians aim to optimise the wound healing environment (including optimal exudate management) and prevent complications such as infection and blistering. Excess exudate can lead to wound breakdown, increased bacterial burden and delaying healing, causing an increased risk of wound infection (superficial) and ultimately increasing the risk of surgical site infection (SSI) (deep infection at the site of the prosthesis). This article describes the evaluation of different postoperative dressings in use within the orthopaedic department of a tertiary hospital, as part of a quality improvement program aimed at evaluating the performance of postoperative dressings and ensuring that the most appropriate dressing is used in the management of postoperative wounds in orthopaedic patients.

BAFF signaling in B cell metabolism.

BAFF is an essential cytokine primarily known for its role in maintaining B cell homeostasis via induction of a pro-survival gene expression profile. Additionally, recent evidence suggests that BAFF induced signaling also drives a metabolic program that is needed for homeostatic cell mass maintenance in resting B cells and which increases the cells' capacity to divide. Many components of the signaling cascades initiated by BAFF, the alternative NFκB pathway and the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway, are active in roles beyond their classically assigned function.

Mental health staff may have limited exposure to emergencies associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) during postgraduate training. The first time they encounter a person in the midst of severe obsessions, or one who has compulsively self-harmed in response to such obsessions, might be when working on call covering the emergency department. This educational article presents the lived experience of one of the authors as a clinical scenario.

Immunoglobulin expression in the endoplasmic reticulum shapes the metabolic fitness of B lymphocytes.

The major function of B lymphocytes is to sense antigens and to produce protective antibodies after activation. This function requires the expression of a B-cell antigen receptor (BCR), and evolutionary conserved mechanisms seem to exist that ensure that B cells without a BCR do not develop nor survive in the periphery. Here, we show that the loss of BCR expression on Burkitt lymphoma cells leads to decreased mitochondrial function and impaired metabolic flexibility.

Recent years have seen a surge in interest in mental healthcare and some reduction in stigma. Partly as a result of this, alongside a growing population and higher levels of societal distress, many more people are presenting with mental health needs, often in crisis. Systems that date back to the beginning of the National Health Service still form the basis for much care, and the current system is complex, hard to navigate and often fails people.

Alexithymia in children with medically unexplained symptoms: a systematic review.

Objective: Adult research investigating the link between alexithymia and medically unexplained symptoms (MUS) has found a significant relationship between increased alexithymia and MUS. This difficulty in expressing emotions is likely to begin in childhood so the objective of this paper is to present a quantitative review of studies focussing on the association between MUS and alexithymia in children.

Methods: Databases were searched with predefined terms relating to alexithymia and MUS in children (0-17 years).

Comparison of clozapine monitoring and adverse event management in a psychiatrist-only and a clinical pharmacist-psychiatrist collaborative clinic.

Introduction: In an effort to establish clinical support for providers prescribing clozapine and to help reverse the national decline in clozapine utilization, a clinical pharmacist began seeing half the clozapine clinic patients, preceding the psychiatrist, at this facility in July 2017.
