Vaccination and immune responses of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) against betanodavirus.

This review summarizes the available knowledge on the immune defences of European sea bass against antigenic preparations derived from the viral encephalopathy and retinopathy virus (betanodavirus), which represents a major threat to the health of this fish species. The nodavirus is widely present and differentiates into several strains that infect invertebrates (in insects, alphanodavirus) and teleost fish, and thus may represent a great problem for farmed fish species. Many efforts have been directed to discovering new immunizations to induce protection in sea bass, especially at young stages, and these efforts have included employing diverse betanodavirus strains, antigen preparation, vaccination routes, and the addition of adjuvants and/or immunostimulants.

Evolution of Th2 responses: characterization of IL-4/13 in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) and studies of expression and biological activity.

Th2 immunity is a primary host defence against metazoan pathogens and two of the important cytokines involved in this immune response in mammals are IL-4 and IL-13. Recently the origin and evolution of Th2 immune responses have been investigated in fish where a molecule with relatedness to both IL-4 and IL-13 is present, termed IL-4/13. Different IL-4/13 paralogues (IL-4/13 A and IL-4/13B) exist in teleost fish.

Agarose Spot as a Comparative Method for in situ Analysis of Simultaneous Chemotactic Responses to Multiple Chemokines.

We describe a novel protocol to quantitatively and simultaneously compare the chemotactic responses of cells towards different chemokines. In this protocol, droplets of agarose gel containing different chemokines are applied onto the surface of a Petri dish, and then immersed under culture medium in which cells are suspended. As chemokine molecules diffuse away from the spot, a transient chemoattractant gradient is established across the spots.

Phase transitions and critical phenomena in the two-dimensional Ising model with dipole interactions: A short-time dynamics study.

The ferromagnetic Ising model with antiferromagnetic dipole interactions is investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulations, focusing on the characterization of the phase transitions between the tetragonal liquid and stripe of width h phases. The dynamic evolution of the physical observables is analyzed within the short-time regime for 0.5≤δ≤1.

Quantitative interpretation of FDG PET/CT with myocardial perfusion imaging increases diagnostic information in the evaluation of cardiac sarcoidosis.

Background: FDG PET/CT with myocardial perfusion imaging is a useful method for evaluating cardiac sarcoidosis (CS), but interpretation is not standardized. We developed a method for quantification of cardiac FDG PET/CT and evaluated its relationship to conventional interpretation, perfusion defects, clinical events, and immunosuppressive treatment.

Methods And Results: FDG PET/CT with MPI studies performed for CS (n = 38) were retrospectively compared to negative control studies acquired for oncologic indications (n = 10).

Dual AV Nodal Nonreentrant Tachycardia Resulting in Inappropriate ICD Therapy in a Patient with Cardiac Sarcoidosis.

Dual atrioventricular nodal nonreentrant tachycardia (DAVNNT) occurs due to concurrent antegrade conduction over fast and slow atrioventricular nodal pathways and is treated by slow pathway modification. We describe a unique case of a patient with cardiac sarcoidosis who received inappropriate ICD shocks for DAVNNT. Atrial and ventricular device electrograms satisfied both rate and V>A criteria for ventricular tachycardia.

[Diabetes mellitus risk screening of parents of private school students in the city of Jundiaí, São Paulo, Brazil].

Objective: To screen the risk of developing diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) in adult individuals.

Methods: Several risk factors for DM2 (sedentary lifestyle, previous coronary artery disease, hyperglycemia-inducing medications, body mass index [BMI], blood pressure, serum triglyceride, and HDL-cholesterol levels) were assessed in 314 adults as a function of gender and age group.

Primary carnitine deficiency and sudden death: in vivo evidence of myocardial lipid peroxidation and sulfonylation of sarcoendoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase 2.

Objectives: Primary carnitine deficiency is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the SLC22A5 gene which results in impaired carnitine transport, cytosolic fatty acid accumulation and impaired beta oxidation. The disease is associated with cardiomyopathy and arrhythmias, but the mechanism is unknown. We hypothesized that carnitine deficiency results in increased myocardial oxidative stress.

Linear lichen planopilaris of the face is a rare variant of lichen plano- pilaris. Asymptomatic follicular papules in a linear configuration are the characteristic clinical features. The incidence is still unknown, but there are a few cases reported exclusively in male adults.

Oxidative posttranslational modifications mediate decreased SERCA activity and myocyte dysfunction in Galphaq-overexpressing mice.

Background: Myocyte contractile dysfunction occurs in pathological remodeling in association with abnormalities in calcium regulation. Mice with cardiac myocyte-specific overexpression of Galphaq develop progressive left ventricular failure associated with myocyte contractile dysfunction and calcium dysregulation.

Objective: We tested the hypothesis that myocyte contractile dysfunction in the Galphaq mouse heart is mediated by reactive oxygen species, and in particular, oxidative posttranslational modifications, which impair the function of sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA).

P-wave indices, distribution and quality control assessment (from the Framingham Heart Study).

Background: P-wave indices of maximum P-wave duration and P-wave dispersion have been examined in a broad array of cardiovascular and noncardiovascular disease states. The P-wave indices literature has been highly heterogeneous in measurement methodologies, described quality control metrics, and distribution of values. We therefore sought to determine the reproducibility of P-wave indices in a community-based cohort.

Atypical leiomyoma: An unusual variant of cutaneous pilar leiomyoma.

Cutaneous atypical leiomyoma is an unusual benign tumor arising from arrector pili muscle that shares histological features with uterine atypical or symplastic leiomyoma: atypical cellularity with pleomorphic nuclei but minimal or no mitosis. Six other cases have been reported so far and, in spite of its name and of being a smooth muscle proliferation, no recurrences nor metastasis have been reported.

Pharmacotherapy for atrial arrhythmias: present and future.

Tubal sterilization by laparoscopy or hysteroscopy: which is the most cost-effective procedure?

By using the activity-based cost/management (ABC/M) system we computed and compared costs needed for laparoscopic tubal sterilization (LTS) and Essure hysteroscopic tubal occlusion (EHTO). We found that total health costs related to consultation and presurgery did not differ between LTS and EHTO; EHTO has low recovery unit costs but is more costly for the operating theater, mainly due to Essure microinserts.

Sperm structure of four Systellognatha species, Dinocras cephalotes (Curtis, 1827) and Perla grandis (Rambur, 1841), family Perlidae, Siphonoperla torrentium (Pictet, 1841), family Chloroperlidae, and Isoperla grammatica (Poda, 1761), family Perlodidae, was investigated by light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and immunofluorescence microscopy. The spermatozoa of all the species are filiform and flagellate; they have an elongated compact nucleus, topped by either a bi-layered or three-layered acrosomal complex, and a '9+9+2' axoneme flanked by two mitochondrial derivatives. However, some variations have been observed, particularly regarding the morphology of the acrosomal complex, the shape of the nucleus, two more or less evident accessory bodies flanking the axoneme and the degree of crystallisation of the mitochondrial derivatives.

T cell receptor beta chain from sea bream (Sparus aurata): molecular cloning, expression and modelling of the complexes with MHC class I.

The T cell receptor is a fundamental mediator of the adaptive immune responses, since TR alphabeta on T cells recognize foreign structures (peptides derived from processed antigens) bound to the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) on APC cells. In the present study, we report the cloning of six TRB chains cDNA sequences from gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata), a fish of high economical impact in South Mediterranean aquaculture. The V-BETA domains have the canonical features of known teleost and mammalian TR V-BETA domains and have been divided in four different subgroups.

Immunolocalization of a lipase-like protein in the reproductive apparatus of female Phlebotomus papatasi, at various stages of the gonotrophic cycle.

In female phlebotomine sandflies, little is known about the reproductive accessory glands that presumably contribute to egg production and/or oviposition. The main protein secreted in the accessory glands of female Phlebotomus papatasi was recently characterised as a lipase-like protein, the first to be found in the female accessory glands of any insect. This protein, named PhpaLIP (for Phlebotomus papatasi lipase), has now been detected and localized in the reproductive tissues of female P.

Compartmentalisation of T cells expressing CD8alpha and TCRbeta in developing thymus of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax (L.).

Eggs, larvae, post-larvae and sexually immature juveniles of the teleost Dicentrarchus labrax (L.) were assayed for the expression of genes encoding the T cell receptor beta and CD8alpha. RT-PCR of RNA extracted from larvae revealed TCRbeta transcripts from day 25 post-hatching (ph) and CD8alpha transcripts from 26 days later.
