The nutritional status of the pregnant woman affects the course of pregnancy, delivery, and confinement, as well as the health of the offspring following birth and in subsequent years.

Background: A recently growing number of children and adolescents with overweight or obesity is indicative of the need for diagnosing their complications that may appear in the early childhood. For this reason, diagnostic criteria were developed for components of the metabolic syndrome (MS) also for these groups of the population.

To investigate the relation between level of antibodies against lactoferrin (LfAb) in maternal serum (MS) and birth anthropometry of healthy full-term newborns. The study included 105 pairs of mother-newborn. MS LfAb level was determined using ELISA kit.

Diagnostic hysteroscopy and the risk of malignant cells intraabdominal spread in women with endometrial cancer.

Although hysteroscopy is currently the undisputed gold standard for the examination of the uterine cavity in women with suspected endometrial cancer, it remains controversial as a procedure that can enhance metastasis spread. Endometrial cancer cells may shed during hysteroscopy and be passively transported with fluid flow into the peritoneal cavity. The paper presents the review of current knowledge regarding the risk of neoplasm metastases in women who had diagnostic hysteroscopy and the conditions that have to be met for the procedure to be safe.

Fast determination of indoor radon (Rn) concentration using liquid scintillation counting.

The indoor Rn radionuclide was directly absorbed in typical 20 ml glass scintillation vials by passing -3 dm of ambient air through 16 ml of water-immiscible non-volataile scintillation cocktail Ultima-Gold F for 10 min. The activity of radon and its two -emitting daughters: Po and Po, was determined with the BetaScout low-background liquid scintillation counter. The limit of Rn detection is 9 Bq/m, and the quantification limit with 20% relative accuracy is 28 Bq/m.

Down syndrome (DS) is one of the more commonly occurring genetic disorders, where mental retardation is combined with nutritional diseases. It is caused by having a third copy of chromosome 21, and there exist 3 forms; Simple Trisomy 21, Translocation Trisomy and Mosaic Trisomy. Symptoms include intellectual disability/mental retardation, early onset of Alzheimer's disease and the appearance of various phenotypic features such as narrow slanted eyes, flat nose and short stature.

Meigs' syndrome with elevated CA-125 and HE-4: a case of luteinized fibrothecoma.

Presence of fibrothecoma is not usually accompanied by elevated levels of tumor markers. In recent years, however, there have been isolated reports of fibrothecoma and Meigs' syndrome, accompanied by an increase in tumor markers. We present a case of fibrothecoma with Meigs' syndrome and elevated levels of both CA-125 (cancer antigen 125) and HE-4 (human epididymis protein 4).

Radon (Rn) in underground drinking water supplies of the Southern Greater Poland Region.

Activity concentration of the Rn radionuclide was determined in drinking water samples from the Sothern Greater Poland region by liquid scintillation technique. The measured values ranged from 0.42 to 10.

Radon concentrations in kindergartens and schools in two cities: Kalisz and Ostrów Wielkopolski in Poland.

Plastic PicoRad detectors with activated charcoal have been used for radon monitoring in local kindergartens and schools in two cities, Kalisz and Ostrów Wielkopolski, in the region of Greater Poland. Detectors were exposed for a standard time of 48 h during the autumn and winter of 2011 in 103 rooms (Kalisz) and 55 rooms (Ostrów Wlkp), respectively. The detectors were calibrated in the certified radon chamber of the Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection in Warsaw, Poland.

Introduction: Proinflammatory and prooxidative environment in the peritoneal cavity may be involved in the pathogenesis of endometriosis. Imbalance between reactive oxygen species levels and the antioxidant capacity leads to oxidation of low-density lipoproteins (LDL). The importance of oxidized LDL (Ox-LDL) in the development of atherosclerosis is well recognized.
