Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes high worldwide infant mortality, as well as a high disease burden in the elderly. Efforts in vaccine development over the past 60 years have recently delivered three approved vaccines and two monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). Looking back at the eventful history of RSV vaccine development, several factors can be identified that have hampered the developmental pathway, including the occurrence of enhanced RSV disease (ERD) in the first vaccine attempt and the difficulty in characterizing and stabilizing the pre-fusion F protein as a vaccine target.

One of the requirements of an efficient surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate is a developed surface morphology with a high density of "hot spots", nm-scale spacings between plasmonic nanoparticles. ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) with a flower-like morphology, synthesized by an affordable colloidal route using an aqueous fungi extract of Ganoderma lucidum as a reducing agent and stabilizer, are investigated as SERS-substrate. Each "flower" has large effective surface that is preserved at packing particles into a dense film and thus exhibits an advantageous property for SERS and similar sensing applications. The mycoextract used in our low-cost and green synthesis as surface stabilizer allows subsequent deposition of metal NPs or layers.

The method of affordable colloidal synthesis of nanocrystalline CuZnSnS (CZTS) is developed, which is suitable for obtaining bare CZTS nanocrystals (NCs), cation substituted CZTS NCs, and CZTS-based hetero-NCs. For the hetero-NCs, the synthesized in advance NCs of another material are introduced into the reaction solution so that the formation of CZTS takes place preferably on these "seed" NCs. Raman spectroscopy is used as the primary method of structural characterization of the NCs in this work because it is very sensitive to the CZTS structure and allows to probe NCs both in solutions and films.
