This review will focus on discussing the effects of green tea catechins, with a particular emphasis on clinical studies that evaluate their anticancer potential. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), either as a stand-alone treatment or in conjunction with conventional anticancer therapies, represents a promising alternative strategy for the management of leukaemia.

Background: Healthcare professionals in plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) face unique stressors that contribute to burnout, increasing the risk of errors and compromising patient care. Despite this, there is limited research on PRS burnout in the United States. This study aimed to measure burnout rates and identify high-impact improvement targets within a PRS division at a US academic medical center.

Stressors contributing to burnout among acute care and trauma surgery care teams: a systems-analysis approach.

Background: Burnout negatively impacts healthcare professionals' well-being, leading to an increased risk of human errors and patient harm. There are limited assessments of burnout and associated stressors among acute care and trauma surgery teams.

Methods: Acute care and trauma surgery team members at a US academic medical center were administered a survey that included a 2-item Maslach Burnout Inventory and 21 workplace stressors based on the National Academy of Medicine's systems model of clinician burnout and professional well-being.

Since its outbreak, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has significantly impacted the pediatric population. Pulmonary surfactant dysfunction has been linked to other respiratory diseases in children and COVID-19 in adults, but its role in COVID-19 severity remains unclear. We hypothesized that elevated surfactant protein (SP) levels and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of SP genes are associated with severe COVID-19 in children.

The development of new antibiotics with unique mechanisms of action is paramount to combating the growing threat of antibiotic resistance. Recently, based on inspiration from natural products, an asymmetrical polyacetylene core structure was examined for its bioactivity and found to have differential specificity for different bacterial species based on the substituents around the conjugated alkyne. This research further probes the structural requirements for bioactivity through a systematic synthesis and investigation of new compounds with variable carbon chain length, alkynyl subunits, and alcohol substitution.

Electrospun adsorbent membrane of PLA containing chitosan for toxic metal ions removal from aqueous solution: Effect of chitosan incorporation.

The scarcity of water resources and their pollution are vital to modern civilization. Thus, adsorptive membranes are promising candidates to be applied in the filtration systems to improve the water quality. In summary, this study investigated the effect of chitosan (CS) in the morphological, chemical, and physical aspects of PLA-based membranes incorporating chitosan obtained by electrospinning process, their adsorption behavior in multielement aqueous systems containing Cr, Cu, Zn, Mn , Ni, and Cd in pH 4, and the possible removal mechanism on the composite electrospun membrane's surface.

Longitudinal analysis of culture of patient safety survey results in surgical departments.

Background: There is a need for improved methodologies on how to longitudinally analyze, interpret and learn from the Surveys on Patient Safety Culture™ (SOPS), developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Typically, SOPS quantify results by the percentage of positive responses, but this approach may miss insights from neutral or negative feedback.

Study Design: The SOPS were distributed every two years from 2011 to 2022 to all hospital staff at one academic institution from perioperative services.

Design Approaches for Developing Quality Checklists in Healthcare Organizations: A Scoping Review.

Quality checklists have demonstrated benefits in healthcare and other high-reliability organizations, but there remains a gap in the understanding of design approaches and levels of stakeholder engagement in the development of these quality checklists. This scoping review aims to synthesize the current knowledge base regarding the use of various design approaches for developing quality checklists in healthcare. Secondary objectives are to explore theoretical frameworks, design principles, stakeholder involvement and engagement, and characteristics of the design methods used for developing quality checklists.

The oil industry is facing substantial environmental challenges, especially in managing waste streams such as Oilfield Produced Water (OPW), which represents a significant component of the industrial ecological footprint. Conventional treatment methods often fail to effectively remove dissolved oils and grease compounds, leading to operational difficulties and incomplete remediation. Electrochemical oxidation (EO) has emerged as a promising alternative due to its operational simplicity and ability to degrade pollutants directly and indirectly, which has already been applied in treating several effluents containing organic compounds.

Retrospective Analysis of Dog Bite Injuries in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Purpose: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may suffer a dog bite injury, but the frequency and its clinical impact is unknown. We sought to evaluate the (1) subject characteristics; (2) injury type; (3) clinical care provided; and (4) mortality in children with ASD who suffer a dog bite injury. We hypothesized that children with ASD have higher mortality and require more clinical care than children without ASD.

Transition metal complexes of hydrazones as potential antimicrobial and anticancer agents: A short review.

Hydrazones display an interesting profile of biological activities, which includes mainly antimicrobial and antiproliferative properties. Hydrazones also play an important role in the synthesis of heterocyclic rings and in coordination chemistry. While religion constituted one of the main topics of interest for early social scientists, faith traditions have silently slipped from this central role. When religion now appears in psychological research, it is usually relegated to the position of either the object of psychological investigation (which psychology purports to "explain") or a static piece in the empirical puzzle (as one variable among many when explaining clinical or social outcomes). In either case, religion is generally no longer seen as an equal partner to the social sciences in our attempts to better understand of the human condition.

Operating Room Teams Display Acceptable Levels of Patient Safety Behaviors During Surgical Cases.

Introduction: Cornerstones of patient safety include reliable safety behaviors proposed by Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) practices. A better quantification of these behaviors is needed to establish a baseline for future improvement efforts.

Methods: At one large academic medical center, OR Teams were prospectively assigned to be observed during surgical cases, and patient safety behaviors were quantified using the Teamwork Evaluation of Non-Technical Skills (TENTS) instrument.

Background: Respiratory distress is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide, and prenatal exposure to air pollution is associated with adverse long-term respiratory outcomes; however, the impact of prenatal air pollution exposure on neonatal respiratory distress has not been well studied.

To the extent that we expect ideographs to be closer to the reality they depict than spoken or written words we are succumbing to the perennial allure of positivistic thinking. Morin powerfully argues that human communication, including ideography, cannot be understood apart from practice, thus removing the positivistic assumption that made the "puzzle of ideography" puzzling in the first place.

A Multicenter Retrospective Database Evaluation of Pediatric Patients Diagnosed With Tinea Capitis.

Purpose: Tinea capitis is a common pediatric superficial dermatophyte infection associated with lower socioeconomic status, overcrowded environments, and poor hygiene internationally. Nevertheless, to the authors' knowledge, no studies in the United States have reported an association between tinea capitis diagnoses and diagnostic codes for social determinants of health (SDOH). The objectives of the present study were to analyze the diagnostic and treatment approach and frequency of SDOH diagnostic codes in order to assess the presence of racial disparities in the treatment of pediatric patients aged 0 to 18 years diagnosed with tinea capitis.
