Background: Dislocation of the acromioclavicular joint (ACJ), accounting for 9%-12% of all shoulder injuries, is a frequent shoulder problem. Clavicular hook plates have proven to be a successful implant choice for surgical management. The benefit of this method is that it preserves the diarthrosis of the ACJ while reducing dislocation.

Article Synopsis
  • Germs can infect surgical wounds if a patient's immunity is low, indicated by pus, which may require further operations to drain the wound effectively.
  • A study conducted on 180 orthopedic patients with closed long bone fractures examined the rate and causes of post-surgical infections, monitoring them for symptoms and collecting bacterial cultures over six months.
  • The findings revealed a 7.22% infection rate, with Staphylococcus aureus being the most common bacterium; some infections were treated with irrigation or antibiotics, highlighting the ongoing challenge of managing post-operative infections.

Background: The tibia, a crucial long bone in the lower leg, plays a vital role in supporting mobility. Distal tibial fractures (DTFs) are relatively uncommon among lower extremity fractures. Minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis (MIPPO) has become increasingly popular due to advancements in surgical techniques and its potential for positive clinical outcomes.

  • Local steroid injections provide short-term pain relief for tennis elbow, but novel treatments like autologous blood injections may offer more effective results.
  • The study compared the effectiveness of steroid injections versus autologous blood injections in 396 patients suffering from lateral epicondylitis over 12 weeks.
  • Results showed that patients receiving autologous blood injections reported significantly lower pain levels than those receiving steroid injections, with a notable p-value of 0.0001 indicating strong statistical significance.

Article Synopsis
  • Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have regenerative abilities beneficial for treating chronic diseases, like diabetes mellitus (DM), which causes long-term complications due to high blood sugar levels.
  • The study aimed to determine how high glucose concentrations affect the viability and function of human adipose tissue-derived MSCs (hAD-MSCs).
  • Results showed that hAD-MSCs in high glucose conditions had decreased cell viability, disrupted mitochondrial function, and altered protein expressions, indicating that hyperglycemia negatively impacts these stem cells' regenerative potential.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a therapeutically efficient type of stem cells validated by their ability to treat many inflammatory and chronic conditions. The biological and therapeutic characteristics of MSCs can be modified depending on the type of microenvironment at the site of transplantation. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a commonly diagnosed metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia, which alters over time the cellular and molecular functions of many cells and causes their damage.

The growth of global construction has contributed to an inevitable increase in the amount of construction and demolition (C&D) waste, and the recycling of C&D waste as aggregates in concrete is receiving increased interest, resulting in less demand for normal aggregates and bringing a potential solution for the landfilling of wastes. Recently, several studies have focused on the use of C&D waste in alkali-activated concrete to move one step closer to sustainable concretes. This paper focuses on the main mechanisms of using C&D waste in the resulting physical, mechanical, and durability properties of alkali-activated concrete in fresh and hardened state properties.

Initial spinal cord compression (ISCC) in B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is rarely present at diagnosis. We performed a multicenter retrospective analysis of 66 patients with ISCC, including diffuse large B-cell (DLBCL) (70%), follicular (20%), small lymphocytic (6%), marginal zone (2%) and B-cell unclassified (2%) lymphomas, with the aim of describing their management and outcomes, as well as the occurrence of central nervous system (CNS) relapses. All but two patients received cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisone (CHOP) or CHOP-like regimens, with rituximab in 61% of cases.

A new family of 2-hydroxyalk(en/yn)ylimidazoles has been evaluated as serine-histidine bare dyad models for the ring-opening reaction of L-lacOCA, a cyclic O-carboxyanhydride. These models were selected to unravel the implication of intramolecular hydrogen bonding and to substantiate its influence on the nucleophilicity of the alcohol moiety, as it is suspected to occur in enzyme active sites. Although designed to exclusively facilitate the preliminary step of proton transfer during the studied ring-opening reaction, these minimalistic models depicted a measureable increase in reactivity relative to the isolated fragments.

We present the nonlinear absorption investigation of an electroactive ligand and two ruthenium and iron metal complexes under 532 nm, 30 ps laser excitation, by the "open aperture" Z-scan technique. Significant nonlinear optical parameters have in all cases been measured, while the nonlinear attribute has been found to change from saturable to reverse saturable absorption between the initial ligand and its complexes.

A crown-tetrathiafulvalene electroactive receptor has been covalently linked to electropolymerizable pyrrole or 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene monomers. The synthetic route to the monofonctionalized tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) ligand has been optimized. Two derivatives of pyrrole (N- and 3-substituted) were synthesized.

A tetrathiafulvalene-based redox-switchable ligand with unprecedented electrochemical recognition properties for a metallic cation is described and is chemically immobilized onto a solid surface. The recognition properties for Pb2+ are maintained at the solid-liquid interface. Evidence of the modulation of the binding affinity of the modified surface, as a function of the potential applied, is given by EQCM analyses and by direct measurements of residual Pb2+ concentration in solution by atomic absorption.

A redox responsive ligand incorporating the tetrathiafulvalene unit has been synthesized. The crystal structure of the free ligand (Z)-1 (C(20)H(30)O(5)S(8), triclinic P&onemacr;, Z = 2, a = 9.087(6) Å, b = 11.

A series of redox-responsive ligands that associate the electroactive tetrathiafulvalene core with polyether subunits of various lengths has been synthesized. X-ray structures are provided for each of the free ligands. The requisite structural criteria for reaching switchable ligands are satisfied for the largest macrocycles, that is, planarity of the 1,1',3,3'-tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) pi system and correctly oriented coordinating atoms.
