Probiotics such as bifidobacteria have been given to low-birth-weight neonates (LBWNs) at risk for a disrupted gut microbiota leading to the development of serious diseases such necrotizing enterocolitis. Recently prebiotics such as lactulose are used together with bifidobacteria as synbiotics. However, faster and more powerful bifidobacteria growth is desired for better LBWN outcomes.

A single-arm study was conducted with 10 children aged 2-12 years with severe cow's milk allergy (CMA) requiring complete allergen elimination. Subjects were administered kestose, a prebiotic, at 1 or 2 g/day for 12 weeks. Results of a subsequent oral food challenge (OFC) showed a statistically significant increase in the total dose of cow's milk ingestion (1.

Constipation is common in children and can significantly affect quality of life. Prebiotics are reportedly helpful for constipation in adults, but few studies have examined their use in young children. In this study, the effect of 1-kestose (kestose), which has excellent bifidobacterial growth properties, on constipation in kindergarten children ( = 11) was compared with that of maltose ( = 12) in a randomized, double-blind study.

Background: Interventions targeting the gut microbiota for treating food allergy (FA) have been gaining much attention. Although several studies have examined the effects of probiotics, few have verified the effects of prebiotic intervention on FA in humans.

Methods: We conducted a preliminary open-label, parallel-group comparison trial in children diagnosed with severe cow's milk allergy (CMA) who were instructed to ingest baked milk (BM; bread or cookies) daily.

The precursor of heme, protoporphyrin IX (PPIX), accumulates abundantly in the uteri of birds, such as Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica, which has brown-speckled eggshells; however, the molecular basis of PPIX production in the uterus remains largely unknown. Here, we investigated the cause of low PPIX production in a classical Japanese quail mutant exhibiting white eggshells by comparing its gene expression in the uterus with that of the wild type using transcriptome analysis. We also performed genetic linkage analysis to identify the causative genomic region of the white eggshell phenotype.

Multiple daily injections of insulin, referred to basal-bolus regimen, are generally essential in achieving glycemic control and preventing ketosis in insulin-dependent diabetes, such as type 1 diabetes (T1D). A 75-year-old man with T1D receiving basal-bolus insulin therapy exhibited symptoms of dementia after hospitalization due to pyelonephritis and failed to continue insulin self-injection. Given that his social and familial circumstances allowed insulin injection once a day during the morning, bolus insulin injections needed to be discontinued.

The L strain of Japanese quail exhibits a plumage phenotype that is light yellowish in colour. In this study, we identified a nonsense mutation in the premelanosome protein (PMEL) gene showing complete concordance with the yellowish plumage within a pedigree as well as across strains by genetic linkage analysis of an F intercross population using approximately 2,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were detected by double digest restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (ddRAD-seq). The yellowish plumage was inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, and the causative mutation was located within an 810-kb genomic region of the LGE22C19W28_E50C23 linkage group (LGE22).

Introduction: The search for objective biomarkers of psychiatric disorders has a long history. Despite this, no universally accepted instruments or methods to detect biomarkers have been developed. One potential exception is near-infrared spectroscopy, although interpreting the measures of blood flow recorded with this technique remains controversial.

We have developed a high-yielding synthesis of meso-tetraalkylporphyrins, which previously have been obtained only in lower yields. By employing Montmorrilonite K10 as the acid catalyst and 3 Å molecular sieves as the dehydrating agent, yields that reached 70 % could be achieved with some aliphatic aldehydes. The free-base porphyrins with decyl (C10) or longer chains were imaged at the single-molecule level at the solvent/surface interface.

A series of isobutenyl compounds possessing various alkyl chain lengths (C(n)-1) with a carbon number of n = 14-21 were synthesized and their two-dimensional (2D) structures were systematically studied using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) at a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG)/solvent interface. Two kinds of solvent, such as 1-phenyloctane (PO) and 1-phenylnonane (PN), were selected to examine the 2D structures by changing the alkyl chain length of the isobutenyl compounds. At the HOPG/PO interface, C(n)-1 molecules with shorter alkyl chains (n = 14-17) showed the same zig-zag shaped 2D structure regardless of the alkyl chain length, whereas an odd-even effect was recognized in C(n)-1 compounds with longer alkyl chains (n = 18-21) displaying the wavy and tripod structures, alternately.

Carefully designed porphyrin building blocks assemble through selective imidazole binding in various solvents to form linear multiporphyrin objects. From a dynamic mixture of monomers, dimers, and oligomers, linear objects were observed on a highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) surface. On the surface, the objects' morphology clearly depended on the solvent used for deposition and was modified upon heating.

By using a simple anthracene derivative with four alkoxy tails, a two-dimensional patterned surface was fabricated. The two-dimensional structures were directly visualized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at the solid/liquid interface. The anthracene derivative formed highly ordered structures displaying cavities into which solvent molecules of 1-phenyloctane were coadsorbed.

Src42A is one of the two Src homologs in Drosophila. Src42A protein accumulates at sites of cell-cell or cell-matrix adhesion. Anti-Engrailed antibody staining of Src42A protein-null mutant embryos indicated that Src42A is essential for proper cell-cell matching during dorsal closure.
