Background: Despite treatment with therapeutic hypothermia, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is associated with adverse developmental outcomes, suggesting the involvement of subcortical structures including the thalamus and basal ganglia, which may be vulnerable to perinatal asphyxia, particularly during the acute period. The aims were: (1) to examine subcortical macrostructure in neonates with HIE compared to age- and sex-matched healthy neonates within the first week of life; (2) to determine whether subcortical brain volumes are associated with HIE severity.

Methods: Neonates (n = 56; HIE: n = 28; Healthy newborns from the Developing Human Connectome Project: n = 28) were scanned with MRI within the first week of life.

Unlabelled: Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a heterogeneous neurodegenerative disease of presenile onset. A better characterization of neurodegenerative disorders has been sought by using tools such as genome-wide association studies (GWAS), where associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and cognitive profiles could constitute predictive biomarkers for these diseases. However, in FTD, associations between genotypes and cognitive phenotypes are yet to be explored.

This study describes and characterizes methods for high-performance liquid chromatography diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) analysis of formulations containing molecules with antifungal activity of three different classes: terbinafine and butenafine (allylamines), miconazole and fluconazole (azoles), and geraniol, neral and geranial (monoterpenes). All methods used the same chromatographic column (RP18 ), enabling the analysis to be performed in a single batch. The specificity was extensively discussed through the establishment of purity peak methods.

A promising alternative for unraveling the principles under which the dynamic interactions among genes lead to cellular phenotypes relies on mathematical and computational models at different levels of abstraction, from the molecular level of protein-DNA interactions to the system level of functional relationships among genes. This review article presents, under a bottom-up perspective, a hierarchy of approaches to modeling gene regulatory network dynamics, from microscopic descriptions at the single-molecule level in the spatial context of an individual cell to macroscopic models providing phenomenological descriptions at the population-average level. The reviewed modeling approaches include Molecular Dynamics, Particle-Based Brownian Dynamics, the Master Equation approach, Ordinary Differential Equations, and the Boolean logic abstraction.

The total reactive antioxidant potential (TRAP) is one of the methods most employed to estimate the antioxidant capacity of samples in vitro. This method is based on the quenching of luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence derived from the thermolysis of 2,2'-azo-bis(2-amidinopropane)dihydrochloride (AAPH) as the free radical source. However, this method can present limitations when the sample does not present a lag phase.
